The award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to increasing the participation of underserved populations in the field. Limited to two awards annually, it highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in health education.

The Helen M. Heitmann Young Scholar Award, presented by SHAPE America, honors young professionals who have made significant contributions to research in curriculum and instruction within health and physical education. Eligible candidates must be current SHAPE America members and have 3 to 6 years of experience post-doctorate. This award emphasizes active involvement and scholarship in the field, encouraging innovative research that enhances educational practices for preK-12 students.

Experienced health and physical education professionals in Michigan and nationwide can receive top professional recognition for long-term contributions to school health, physical activity, dance, sport, or community health education. The Luther Halsey Gulick Award from SHAPE America honors one outstanding leader annually for distinguished service and impact on preK–12 student well-being.

Graduate students in psychomotor measurement and evaluation at U.S. colleges or universities can receive support for professional expenses, including those contributing to community health education in Michigan. With a mission to advance health and physical education, SHAPE America provides this award to current members who show strong potential in the field and have at least one year of study remaining.

With a mission to advance health and physical education, Society of Health and Physical Educators provides Michigan community health education professionals with a Measurement and Evaluation Honor Award recognizing outstanding contributions. Eligible nominees must be current SHAPE America and Measurement and Evaluation SIG members who have significantly advanced the SIG’s mission; posthumous nominations are allowed within five years.

Health and physical education professionals advancing measurement and evaluation, including those working in Michigan community health education, may be honored through this lifetime achievement award. With a mission to advance professional practice, Society of Health and Physical Educators recognizes SHAPE America members who demonstrate substantial, long-term scholarly impact in measurement and evaluation in health and physical education.

Current SHAPE America members planning projects that expand opportunities for girls and women in sport can apply for the NAGWS Legacy Award, a US $1,000 grant available nationwide, including Michigan. Eligible proposals include research, professional development, after-school programs, or speakers that advance female participation and leadership in sports and related community health education.

Michigan community health education organizations can access funding through AES Hawaii Foundation for programs in social justice and energy equality, education and workforce development, environmental stewardship, and community health and resilience. Nonprofits and statewide entities serving communities near AES Hawaiʻi renewable energy projects, or working at a statewide level, may be eligible.

Master’s students in school-based health education programs at accredited colleges or universities in Michigan and other U.S. locations can receive funding for their studies through the Barbara A. Cooley Master’s Scholarship. Society of Health and Physical Educators provides a US $1,000 annual award plus a one-year student membership in SHAPE America.

Michigan undergraduate students majoring in school-based health education can receive a US $1,000 Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship to support their studies and related community health education work. Offered by the Society of Health and Physical Educators, this award also includes a one-year complimentary SHAPE America student membership for eligible full-time sophomores, juniors, and seniors in U.S. institutions.

Michigan 501(c)(3) nonprofits hosting community wellness, health education, or physical activity events can access funding through Better Health Together for sponsorship support. Grants up to Up to US $5,000 may support community events and engagement activities that promote health, elevate community voices, and align with the funder’s mission and values; one sponsorship per organization annually.

Michigan community health organizations, especially 501(c)(3) nonprofits with at least one year of outcomes, can access funding through H Hovnanian Family Foundation for community health education, public health, emergency response, and related initiatives. Grants up to US $10,000 support projects in the U.S., with preference for work conducted in New Jersey and Armenian communities.

With a mission to support African American children and families, Jack and Jill of America Foundation provides Michigan community health organizations with funding for physical and mental wellness programs. Eligible 501(c)(3)s, fiscally sponsored projects, and public agencies can request up to US $10,000 for prevention education, care access, mental health support, and long-term community well-being initiatives.

Michigan community health and social service organizations can access funding through Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation to support racial equity initiatives in Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township. The Ypsilanti Area Community Fund backs projects in community public health, youth educational support, and community support, including mental health, violence prevention, homelessness prevention, and unemployment programming.

The See, Test & Treat Grant offers funding for a pathologist-led cancer screening program aimed at underserved communities. With a focus on health education, the program provides vital cervical and breast cancer screenings, ensuring same-day results and follow-up care. Eligible institutions can apply for funding up to $20,000 for single-year projects or up to $50,000 over three years. This initiative addresses health disparities, empowers communities, and enhances the visibility of pathology in healthcare.

Provident Health Foundation of Marinette-Menominee Inc.

The Provident Health Foundation was created in 2019 as part of the final agreement between Advocate Aurora Health and Bay Area Medical Center that made the hospital a wholly-owned member of the Advocate Aurora system with a big vision for community health.

How we fund is evolving as we become more established and as we listen and respond to the needs of our community, both the residents of these counties and the nonprofits with which we partner. Our philosophy of operating is born from the vision of health for Marinette and Menominee Counties that we have written into our bylaws and evidence-based best practices for private foundations on how to achieve that vision. The Provident Health Foundation Board of Directors codifies that in a Strategic Plan for Provident every three years.

The purpose of the Provident Health Foundation is to improve and sustain the health and well being of the people who live in Marinette and Menominee Counties and ensure them access to affordable quality acute hospital care. Provident Health Foundation's mission is to serve those in Marinette and Menominee counties.  

Provident Health Foundation Grant

We fund new or existing program and project requests that work to advance our mission as stated above through our strategic plan priorities. Our strategic plan was informed by the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) conducted in collaboration with the Community Health Partnership of Marinette/Menominee Counties and included feedback from over 1000 residents and 70 leaders. We fund to address the top health improvement priorities from the CHNA. Those are:

• Mental Health
• Childhood Obesity reduction through healthy eating and active living
• Equitable Access to Care

We fund requests that address these through a prevention or promotion approach as opposed to treatment or recovery. We also fund requests that address social determinants of health with the goal of improving these health behaviors in our community.

Awards

Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award

The Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award recognizes a healthcare professional who has made outstanding contributions to improving osteoporosis care and increasing community awareness about bone health. This award will be presented annually to a healthcare professional residing and working in the United States or its territories.

The Executive Committee of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation’s (BHOF’s) Board of Trustees will review nominations and select the recipient.

The award winner will be notified and announced in May, in recognition of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. The recipient will receive a plaque and a financial award (currently $1,000) to support community service efforts initiatives related to osteoporosis and bone health.

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

Prize Summary

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research.

Funded by a major bequest to the AACR from cancer research pioneer Dr. June L. Biedler, a scientist, mentor, and former member of the AACR Board of Directors, this prize showcases outstanding examples of cancer journalism and recognizes individual professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative, and compelling stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy.

The prize provides an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a commemorative award.

Administered by the CDC Foundation, nominations must come from others who can document how the nominee’s work has benefited public health; self-nominations are ineligible.

Lilly Foundation, through its charitable grants, aims to support permissible charitable efforts to improve access to quality healthcare for resource-limited communities in low- and lower-middleincome countries (L/LMICs) and in the United States. Strengthening access to care is essential for enhancing community well-being and supporting economic stability in resource-limited settings.

The Global Health focus area aims to close gaps in quality healthcare by supporting charitable solutions that improve access, bring care closer to where people live, and address the high burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in resource-limited settings. To the extent permissible, the Foundation prioritizes charitable efforts related to cardiometabolic health in resource-limited settings.

K-12 STEM Education

The K-12 STEM Education focus area aims to close the gaps for students from low-income communities by supporting programs that foster new pathways and pipelines to STEM education through focused K-12 efforts, concentrating on the critical middle school years. The Foundation’s K-12 STEM Education grants are focused on initiatives that benefit Marion County, Indiana.

Economic Mobility

The Economic Mobility focus area supports charitable and educational programs that strengthen workforce readiness, postsecondary and skills-based educational pathways, and housing stability to promote long-term prosperity. This support is focused on Marion County, Indiana, with the goal of improving economic opportunity for low-income communities and advancing community well-being.

Established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Quest Diagnostics Foundation is committed to addressing the systemic root causes of health disparities.
