Arizona 501(c)(3) nonprofits and eligible government agencies can receive funding for youth development, workforce training, sustainability, and thriving community programs. Marathon Petroleum provides support across its marketing area, with preference for communities near its operations, and accepts only invited proposals, though interested organizations may submit an initial inquiry to local community relations contacts.

Arizona youth-serving entities offering out-of-school academic enrichment and youth development activities in Arizona can apply for the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. Focused on academic success and youth development, Arizona Department of Education invites eligible entities serving Title I-eligible school sites to establish or expand community learning centers during non-school hours.

Arizona youth programs and 3rd grade classrooms interested in gardening can access funding through the Bonnie Plants Foundation’s 3rd Grade Cabbage Program; awards US $1,000 in in-kind support and free cabbage plants. Focused on firearms safety, education, and marksmanship, The NRA Foundation invites youth-serving and community groups, including scouting organizations, to apply for US $3,000 - US $5,000 in project support.

Nonprofit organizations running youth-focused programs and projects, including scouting and youth leadership activities in Arizona and beyond, may be eligible for support that prioritizes Whatcom County youth. Chuckanut Health Foundation’s Eleanor & Henry Jansen Foundation generally funds projects (not completed work) and favors initiatives with strong volunteer involvement and diversified or matching funding sources.

Young people ages 13 to 19 in the Berkshire Taconic region can receive $200 to $800 to pursue summer arts enrichment, including apprenticeships, internships, and new artistic studies. High school seniors, college, and non-traditional students pursuing criminal justice or first responder studies can receive scholarship support for 2- or 4-year U.S. programs. CommunityGiving provides Arizona youth development and leadership organizations with a scholarship opportunity that may benefit participants from Minnesota’s Benton, Stearns, or Sherburne counties attending eligible schools.

Arizona youth development and leadership programs can access funding through Yellowstone Club Community Foundation’s Big Bald Dave Adventure Scholarship, which provides a summer outdoor adventure and service experience. Individual Big Sky high school students in grades 9–11 who show leadership, volunteerism, and a passion for the outdoors may be strong candidates.

Maury and Betty Hull Endowed Scholarship

The Maury and Betty Hull Scholarship was created to honor their lives and appreciation for their hometown, Forks, WA. The scholarship was established to help community students pursue their higher education dreams.

Awards begin at $2,000 and are at the discretion of the committee.

Arizona youth development and leadership programs working with Native or Indigenous youth may be eligible for the Champions for Change initiative, which develops young leaders through experience-based learning and advocacy training. The Aspen Institute’s Center for Native American Youth selects 5–6 U.S.-based Indigenous youth ages 14–24 each year; all applicants join the CNAY network.

Youth-serving organizations in Arizona focused on youth development and leadership may be eligible to partner with the Bezos Scholars Program to support student-led community change projects. Bezos Family Foundation supports civic engagement, educational access, and leadership development for high school juniors through yearlong programming, project grants, and educator mentorship, which can complement scouting-focused initiatives.

The Juliette Low’s Amazing Girls Scholarship, established in 2011 by the East Texas Communities Foundation, is aimed at female graduating seniors from Smith County who have been active in Girl Scouts. This scholarship supports educational pursuits for students attending any college in the U.S. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum GPA of 3.00. The award amount is $1,000, and preference is given to recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Reapplication is encouraged.

AFL Community Grants aim to empower education, youth, and life advancement through targeted community support. The program is designed for non-profit organizations, focusing on STEM education, youth development, and the LEAP initiative for adult self-sufficiency. The Festus & Helen Stacy Foundation provides grants to non-profit organizations worldwide, especially those focusing on evangelism, leadership development, holistic ministries, and media outreach. Established in 1980, the foundation aims to support projects that address the needs of the marginalized and promote generous giving. Grants are typically awarded for specific initiatives in South Florida, nationally, and internationally, particularly in emerging nations. Organizations must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) to be eligible.

Karma for Cara Microgrants empowers students aged 18 and under to bring their service project ideas to life with funding up to $1,000. Founded in honor of Cara Becker, who inspired community service during her own health journey, the program supports a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving local communities across the U.S. Students are encouraged to demonstrate creativity and community involvement, with grants awarded quarterly to fuel their impactful projects.

Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials.

The IBMA Foundation is proud to host the Fletcher Bright Memorial Grant for Young Musicians. The Bright family of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Thomas J. Brown of Dalton, Georgia; and Barbara Martin Stephens of Madison, Tennessee made combined gifts of $29,000 in 2020 to create the fund that will benefit young people interested in learning to play bluegrass music and endow it for decades to come.

The Bright family is committed to supporting the endowment, and they welcome donations from others interested in helping young musicians achieve their bluegass education goals.

Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants up to $500 per applicant are awarded to help cover expenses of lessons, educational materials, instrument rental or purchase, workshops, and camps. Young bluegrass musicians at all levels may apply for assistance. Financial need will be considered, but is not required to receive a Bright grant. Applications for Bright grants may be made throughout the year.
