Best Community & Civic Engagement Grants

The TFF Capacity Building Grant supports nonprofit organizations, schools, and government agencies in Illinois, helping them strengthen their operational effectiveness. Grants can fund a variety of projects, including professional development and strategic planning. Organizations are required to contribute 10% of the requested amount in cash. This grant aims to enhance organizational impact, enabling recipients to deliver more effective programs and pursue new opportunities.

Who We Fund

The Sherwood Foundation limits grants to organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3), government entities, schools, or churches that are serving Nebraska. These organizations must be in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service.

The Sherwood Foundation limits grants to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that predominately benefit those that are serving Nebraska and must address one of our categories:

Urban Community Partnerships

Our work in Nebraska’s urban communities focuses on family stability and child wellbeing with an overarching emphasis on community context. Using a two-generation approach, we are interested in the relationship between direct service provision and the greater systems that impact a community. Applicants are wise to cite specific research that influences a service model or approach to solving a community challenge.

Omaha Public Schools

Guidelines: 

• OPS employees must obtain approval from the District before submitting an application. 
• Applications lacking such documentation will not receive consideration.

Greater Nebraska Initiatives

Through these grants, The Sherwood Foundation promotes equity and inclusion as pathways for creating the good life for all in Nebraska.  Core areas of work include child welfare, immigrant inclusion, housing, advocacy & civic engagement, leadership, and community infrastructure. Requests from communities outside of the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas are considered during standard grant cycles.

Early Childhood Education

The Sherwood Foundation supports early childhood education on a regional and national basis through The Buffett Early Childhood Fund.

What the Sherwood Foundation Values

 The Sherwood Foundation has strongly held values regarding civil liberties, equality and fairness with a particular focus on women and people oppressed because of their race, sexual orientation, and/or religion or lack-thereof.

• We respect that not all nonprofit organizations share the same values as the Foundation.
• We don’t ask nonprofits to change values for us or for funding.
• We do ask that nonprofits leaders respect our values and save everyone time and energy by not seeking funding if our organizational values aren’t aligned.

Equal rights.

We believe all humans are created equal. We work to eliminate government and social barriers to equality.

Access to civic life.

We are proud to live in a democracy and believe that the rights provided to individuals in the United States should be protected and the best way to protect those rights is to ensure equal access to the voting polls. 

Reproductive justice.

We support a woman’s right to self-determination about reproductive health choices. We expect our grantees serving women and girls to ensure access and education to all health care options, including abortion. 

Opportunity to thrive.

We believe a zip code should not determine the outcome of a life. We see how government institutions and laws have historically and do presently oppress and suppress opportunity, particularly for people of color but also other minority populations and women. We work with our community to undo systemic oppression and build systems that meet the needs of citizens and do not further oppress. We seek economic justice for our neighbors and the opportunity that lies therein.

Access to services.

We expect grantees to ensure that clients have access to services and that service providers work to remove barriers rather than create barriers to care and compassion. A service provider’s religious belief system should not be imposed upon those who seek their services, whether through proselytization, coercion, guilt, or an unspoken quid-pro-quo expectation to participate in faith-based classes or religious services.

Operating Grants

The Sherwood Foundation® believes that providing operating support can make all the difference to nonprofit organizations by providing flexible funding to cover the ongoing costs of day-to-day operations (administrative/overhead). This type of support can free nonprofits to become more strategic about how they address community issues, craft internal solutions to enhance effectiveness, and build organizational infrastructure.

The Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation supports tax-exempt organizations in the Greater Boston area, focusing on civic education, human development, music education, and public broadcasting. Their mission aims to empower disadvantaged individuals, promote civic engagement, and enhance access to the performing arts. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $20,000 and are awarded to organizations with specific, achievable proposals. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that foster community growth and self-sufficiency.

The Korum for Kids Foundation Grant supports initiatives that enhance the lives of children, families, and communities in the South Puget Sound area. Established in 1994, the foundation funds organizations addressing disabilities, early education, and mental health. It prioritizes projects that foster youth development, promote arts and STEM learning, and improve social services. The foundation seeks to collaborate with tax-exempt organizations, ensuring that funds are utilized effectively to create positive community impacts.

The Del Mar Foundation Grant supports community projects that enhance civic pride, preserve open space, and promote cultural activities in Del Mar. Nonprofit organizations can apply for funding to support initiatives like beach improvements and community events. The Foundation encourages applications year-round, with no minimum grant amount, though individual grants cannot exceed 25% of the annual budget. Preference is given to projects directly benefiting the Del Mar community, ensuring a focus on local engagement and sustainability.

The Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation's Community Solutions Grant Program aims to enhance the quality of life in the East Metro by supporting organizations and initiatives that are shaped by and benefit local residents. Through general operating, project, and capital support, the program prioritizes funding for community and economic development, health and human services, and youth and education initiatives, fostering sustainable growth in Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington counties.

The Grable Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children in the Pittsburgh area by supporting early learning, public education, out-of-school programs, and community resources. By investing in innovative educational initiatives and family-friendly activities, the foundation strives to create an environment where children can thrive, explore, and reach their full potential. Their work fosters collaboration among educators, families, and community organizations to ensure every child has access to high-quality learning experiences and support.

The Grotto Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the well-being of individuals and families through community-led initiatives in Minnesota. Organizations can apply if they address at least three of four key areas: Youth Development, Postsecondary Success, Community Safety & Neighborhood Development, and Mentoring. The Foundation invites selected organizations to apply, with grant decisions made three times a year, fostering sustainable solutions for local challenges.

The Buhl Foundation Grant Program supports initiatives in Southwestern Pennsylvania that enhance community vitality and foster economic development. The foundation prioritizes projects in education, health, and employment, particularly those benefiting Pittsburgh's Northside neighborhoods. By focusing on resident-led initiatives, the foundation aims to empower local communities and ensure sustainable growth. Applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, with funding preferences for projects that revitalize neighborhoods and improve access to vital resources.

The Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation supports nonprofits focused on alleviating poverty and promoting social justice in the South. It seeks organizations with strong ties to low-wealth communities, clear strategies for addressing systemic issues, and a long-term vision for change. Eligible applicants should demonstrate accountability, strategic networking, and a commitment to racial equity. The Foundation is open to innovative approaches and encourages submissions from groups aligned with its mission, fostering impactful community partnerships.

The McKnight Foundation's Midwest Climate and Energy Grant focuses on funding initiatives that address the climate crisis while promoting equity in the Midwest. The foundation supports projects that transform energy systems, decarbonize transportation and buildings, and enhance community resilience. It aims to engage diverse populations and foster innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance sustainable practices. Eligible organizations include nonprofits, governmental entities, and those in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, with an emphasis on collaborative, impactful projects.

The New Bremen Foundation Grant supports local non-profit organizations recognized by the IRS under Code Section 501 C (3). It focuses on diverse areas including arts, civic engagement, education, environment, and health services. Additionally, it manages specific funds like the Community Impact Fund and the Komminsk Family Fund, which emphasize environmental and artistic projects within a 50-mile radius of New Bremen, Ohio. This grant aims to enhance community welfare and foster significant local initiatives.

The Woods Charitable Fund Grant supports diverse initiatives in Lincoln, Nebraska, focusing on areas like arts, civic engagement, education, and human services. The Fund invites innovative proposals that foster community growth, enhance cultural experiences, and promote social equity. Special consideration is given to projects addressing the needs of underrepresented populations and integrating new Americans into the community. Organizations must adhere to specific eligibility criteria and submit applications after completing a Letter of Intent.

The Lexington Area Community Foundation Grant Cycle aims to inspire philanthropy and strengthen the community by funding initiatives that address local needs. Grants, typically up to $5,000 and occasionally $10,000 for innovative projects, prioritize education, health, and human services. Eligible organizations include nonprofits and educational institutions serving Lexington, NC. The Foundation seeks measurable results in funded programs while avoiding duplication of existing services. Interested applicants should ensure their projects align with the Foundation's community investment guidelines.

The Aegon Transamerica Foundation Grant supports non-profit organizations focused on enhancing financial and social empowerment in communities where Transamerica employees live and work. Established in 2000, the foundation prioritizes initiatives that foster self-reliance, financial literacy, and community engagement. Eligible organizations must be IRS 501(c)(3) non-profits operating in specific locations such as Atlanta, GA and Denver, CO. The foundation does not fund individuals or certain types of organizations, aiming to create inclusive, resilient communities.

The Foster Foundation Grant supports organizations in the Pacific Northwest that align with priority funding issues such as social services, education, medical research, and community engagement. The foundation seeks to cultivate long-term partnerships and is committed to improving community life through various initiatives. Eligible organizations must hold a 501(c)(3) status and address one of the foundation's priority issues while ensuring that funds are used within the designated geographic reach.

The Ben and Maytee Fisch Foundation focuses on empowering individuals and communities in East Texas through grants that support civic, educational, human services, and medical initiatives. With a commitment to helping people help themselves, the foundation prioritizes organizations exempt from federal income tax and located in Texas, particularly Northeast Texas. Grants are not awarded to organizations that discriminate based on race, creed, or gender, ensuring inclusive support for community development.

The Wakefield Community Foundation Grant aims to enhance the quality of life for Wakefield residents by funding charitable projects in areas such as arts, education, health, and human services. Nonprofit organizations and local governments are eligible, provided they serve Wakefield and are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt. Priority is given to initiatives with long-term impact and those addressing emerging community needs, while avoiding funding for religious, political, or individual purposes.

The Sioux County Community Foundation Grant aims to address emerging needs in Sioux County through charitable support for nonprofit organizations and local government units. Grants focus on areas such as arts, education, health, and human services, promoting community betterment and sustainability. Priority is given to projects with county-wide benefits and collaborative efforts, while generally excluding general operating expenses and multi-year grants. This initiative enhances the quality of life for Sioux County residents by connecting caring donors with impactful causes.

The O’Brien County Community Foundation Grant supports charitable purposes through grants to nonprofit organizations and local government units serving O’Brien County, Iowa. This fund aims to address community needs in areas such as arts, education, health, and human services. By fostering permanent charitable giving, the foundation enhances the quality of life for current and future generations, ensuring that diverse community programs receive necessary funding to thrive.

The Monona County Community Partners Foundation Grant, offered by the Siouxland Community Foundation, aims to enhance the quality of life in Monona County by supporting nonprofit organizations and public education institutions. Grants focus on vital areas such as arts, health, education, and human services, responding to community needs. Priority is given to projects with long-term impact and collaboration among local entities. The grant program will transition to biennial funding starting in 2024, emphasizing thoughtful and sustainable initiatives.

The Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Grant, administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation, aims to enhance the quality of life in Ida County, Iowa. The T.L.L. Temple Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in East Texas by addressing poverty through targeted grants in education, health, economic development, and community revitalization. The Imperial Community Foundation Fund aims to enhance the quality of life in the community through charitable giving and grants. It focuses on supporting local initiatives that foster leadership, education, and inclusivity. The fund prioritizes projects that address emerging needs and empower the community's potential, ensuring a collaborative and trustworthy approach to philanthropy. With a vision for a safe, progressive environment, the fund encourages diverse participation for lasting impact.

The Astle-Alpaugh Family Foundation Grant Program aims to enhance the well-being of individuals and families in Central New Jersey.
