David M. Cordani Courage in Service Grant Program

The Cigna Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI), today announced the launch of the David M. Cordani Courage in Service Grant, a new $1.5 million, 10-year commitment to support the health and well-being of military and veteran communities by prioritizing social connection.

Each year, $150,000 will be awarded to one nonprofit serving military and veteran communities to support programs that strengthen connections, improve well-being, and increase stability for individuals and families navigating key life transitions.

How the Grant Supports Military Communities

The Courage in Service Grant will support nonprofit organizations that deliver:

• Programs that reduce isolation and strengthen resilience among military families through peer support
• Community-centered health and wellness hubs offering physical activity, wellness programming, and mental health support
• Transition-focused services that help individuals and families navigate key military life moments such as deployment, relocation, recovery, and reintegration

MNA Foundation Scholarships & Grants

The Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation (MNAF), a non-profit corporation affiliated with the Minnesota Nurses Association, awards scholarships and grants each year to advance the nursing profession and create more opportunities for students to achieve their goals. 

MNA members, members’ dependents and grandchildren, nursing students, and veterans are eligible to apply for MNA Foundation Scholarships.

The MNAF Linda Knauff Clinical Practice Project Grant supports Minnesota Nurses Association members in conducting research that aligns with MNA's organizational goals. It promotes best practices through literature reviews, workgroup convening, policy development, and quality improvement initiatives. Applicants must be MNA members engaged in direct patient care, complete their projects within two years, and submit periodic reports. Preference is given to first-time applicants whose projects meet quality standards.

The MNA Associate Member Scholarships provide financial assistance to MNA associate members who are typically undergraduate nursing students. Offered by the Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation, these scholarships aim to support the professional development and educational goals of nursing students, contributing to the advancement of the nursing profession and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all. Eligible candidates include MNA members, their dependents, and veterans, fostering a commitment to nursing excellence.

The Mary Eliza Mahoney Scholarships, offered by the Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation (MNAF), provide financial support to nursing students, members of healthcare unions, their dependents, and veterans. Each scholarship awards $2,500 per semester for a maximum of four semesters, totaling up to $10,000. This initiative aims to enhance nursing education and promote the professional growth of future nurses, ensuring access to quality healthcare for all.

Community foundations began nationally in 1914 and are publicly-supported, 501(c)(3) philanthropic organizations that hold, administer, invest and make grants from both endowed and non-endowed funds established by individuals, families and others. They were designed to be simple, flexible, convenient, tax-wise, cost-effective and perpetual charitable vehicles.  

Our Community Foundation was established in Roanoke in 1988. With our growth, we expanded into the Martinsville/Henry County area in 2005. Today, we administer many hundreds of named endowment funds ranging in size from a minimum of $10,000 to millions of dollars. To date, donors have also committed very significant resources to the Foundation through future estate gifts.

Ashby C. and John T. Pinkard Scholarship Fund

 Fund provides higher education scholarships to deserving young men and women.

The Benny Summerlin Scholarship Fund, managed by the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, offers financial assistance to deserving students from Franklin County High School pursuing undergraduate degrees. Established to support capable individuals, this scholarship emphasizes academic potential and financial need. The foundation, active since 1988, administers various scholarships to uplift the educational aspirations of local youth. The Kelsey Nicole Cooper Scholarship Fund, administered by the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, offers scholarships to deserving students from the Martinsville Henry County community, emphasizing volunteerism. Eligible applicants must be graduating seniors or graduates from local high schools, enrolled or planning to enroll in accredited colleges, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. The John W. Wilks, M.D. Excellence in Science Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, provides financial assistance to deserving students pursuing careers in the medical field. Eligible applicants include graduating seniors from Roanoke Valley area high schools or individuals continuing medical studies at the graduate level, demonstrating financial need and academic merit. This scholarship aims to support educational pursuits and foster excellence in healthcare.

The Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program, supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, aims to enhance diversity in the academic research community. It provides funding of $250,000 and a $20,000 annual expense allowance for early-career researchers committed to fostering an inclusive scientific culture. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD or MD, commit to at least 75% research effort, and have no more than 24 months of postdoctoral experience. This initiative empowers fellows to become leaders in science.

The NATA Foundation, established in 1991, is dedicated to advancing the athletic training profession through research and education. It offers the Professional Grants Program to support exceptional research projects relevant to athletic training. With a funding limit of $50,000 over three years, the program encourages diverse proposals, ensuring that the primary or co-primary investigator is a BOC certified athletic trainer. This initiative aims to enhance the profession and benefit the broader physically active community.

The NATA Foundation's Professional Grants Program - New Investigator Grant offers up to $20,000 in funding for innovative research projects in athletic training. This program is aimed at supporting new investigators who are NATA members and BOC certified athletic trainers. The grant fosters research that enhances the profession and contributes to the health and safety of physically active individuals, promoting evidence-based practices in athletic training.

The Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Program, funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to transform STEM graduate education through innovative training approaches. It encourages proposals that support skill development for STEM careers and research on effective educational systems. The program offers funding for projects that pilot and validate novel educational models, promoting broad participation and collaboration with various sectors. Awards range from $300,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the track and project duration.

The NATA Doctoral Student Grants Program, offered by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Foundation, provides financial support for innovative research projects in athletic training. Each year, multiple awards of up to $2,500 are available, with funding limited to direct costs over a maximum of one year. This initiative aims to enhance the profession through research, benefiting athletic trainers and the broader physically active community.

The NATA Masters Student Grant Program, facilitated by the NATA Foundation, supports innovative research projects by master's students in athletic training. With a funding limit of $1,000 for one year, this program emphasizes ethical research practices and collaboration with faculty mentors. Eligible applicants must be current master's students and members of NATA. The Emergency Medicine Interest Group Grant (EMIG), funded by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation, supports medical student interest groups in enhancing emergency medicine education. Grants of up to $500 are awarded for one year, with potential for renewal. Eligible applicants include established or developing EMIGs at medical schools, focusing on educational initiatives. This grant aims to foster innovation in teaching methodologies and support resources for students pursuing education in emergency medicine.

The GEMSSTAR for Emergency Medicine Supplemental Funding Program provides up to $25,000 over two years to support emergency medicine physicians who have received the NIA GEMSSTAR grant. This program aims to enhance the Professional Development Plan of GEMSSTAR awardees, ensuring they receive the necessary funding for their research endeavors. Eligibility is limited to those who have completed their clinical specialty training and are based at U.S. institutions, with funding contingent upon available resources.

The ASTRO-BCRF Emerging Investigator Award aims to support one early career researcher in breast radiation oncology from underrepresented populations. This initiative by the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation provides $100,000 for direct costs over one year, emphasizing diversity in the scientific workforce and encouraging eligible individuals to self-identify as part of underrepresented groups in biomedical research.

The ASTRO Residents/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Seed Grant aims to advance the research careers of residents and fellows focusing on radiation oncology through funding basic, translational, and clinical research. It encourages innovative projects that enhance patient care and improve health care delivery, including cancer research and understanding radiation effects on tissues. This grant is supported by the American Society for Radiation Oncology, which seeks to foster impactful research in this vital medical field.

The ASTRO-LUNGevity Residents/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Seed Grant aims to advance the research careers of residents and fellows focusing on radiation oncology and its impact on lung cancer treatment. This $50,000 award supports innovative basic, translational, and clinical research projects. A no-cost extension may be granted at ASTRO and LUNGevity's discretion, but the total project duration cannot exceed two years.

The ASTRO-AAPM Physics Resident/Post-Doctoral Fellow Seed Grant supports early-career scientists in radiation oncology physics research. The National MS Society offers Harry Weaver Scholar Awards to support emerging researchers in multiple sclerosis. This prestigious award honors Dr. Harry Weaver's legacy and aims to facilitate independent research careers. Eligible candidates must have a doctoral degree and relevant postdoctoral training. The Search Team Grant, established by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, provides financial assistance to active handlers of live-find and human remains detection canines. This program helps cover out-of-pocket expenses for training and equipment, enabling handlers to remain deployment-ready. Over 17 years, it has supported specialized training and essential gear purchases, ensuring that canine teams can effectively assist communities in need during emergencies.
