Our Mission

The Horner Foundation is a family-based charity dedicated to partnering with community-based organizations that provide youth, aged 10-19, hands-on experiential learning opportunities through Out of School Time (OST) to foster positive youth development.

We work in 4 geographic regions, determined by where family members live, their specific interests and needs identified by the community.

Organizational Funding Statement

The Horner Foundation strives to be responsive and meet organizations where they are. This means that we may provide multi-year funding and ongoing support to nonprofits who may be launching a pilot project or going through a transition. However, we also believe in the value of diverse funding sources. The Horner Foundation typically funds organizations for 1-2 funding cycles (2-4 years). In rare cases, we may fund an organizations for 3 funding cycles (6 years).

The Foundation awards two-year grants dedicated to project funding. We fund in four geographic regions, each with its own funding priorities.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Out of School Time (OST) Organizations - STEM Programs    

Strategy

Since 2013, The Horner Foundation has supported Out of School Time programs working directly with underserved youth aged 10-19 in the City of Philadelphia. For our 2024 funding cycle, we will focus on out-of-school time STEM programming. 

Funding Focus

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math): The intention of this funding focus is to inspire members of the next generation to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering, and math sectors through programming delivered in an inclusive learning environment.

• The program may include coding, robotics, entrepreneurship, engineering, and other STEM-related OST programming aimed at equipping youth with the tools necessary to thrive in a tech driven society.
• This funding focus also includes programs that encourage leadership training and career preparation for young tech leaders in underserved communities.

The Mellon Foundation's Economic Development Grant Program aims to address economic disparities in Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania by enhancing workforce skills and creating job opportunities. The program focuses on talent development, workforce systems, and community building, advocating for innovative education and training that aligns with future job markets. It seeks proposals that promote 21st-century skills, foster entrepreneurship, and support underrepresented groups, ultimately driving economic independence and community vitality.

The MTF Rolling Grants by Moses Taylor Foundation support projects under $40,000 throughout the year. Emphasizing collaboration, applicants must meet with Foundation staff before submission to ensure alignment with focus areas. The Foundation prioritizes health care access, older adult health, school-based health, and nonprofit effectiveness, aiming to enhance service delivery in Northeastern Pennsylvania. This initiative seeks innovative solutions to pressing community health challenges, fostering sustainable improvements in well-being.

PADDC Community Grants Program

Our Community Grants Program brings together people, with and without disabilities, in a local community initiative to influence social change and improve the lives of everyone in the community. We support ideas that develop generic change, providing benefits to people with disabilities in settings that are the same as those available to community-at-large. If necessary, projects also change that generic community to meet the needs of people with disabilities, affirming the status of people with disabilities as full and equal members.

The Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council (PADDC) uses the federal definition of developmental disabilities, as it appears in Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000 (The DD Act). This definition is based on substantial physical or mental impairment function in three or more major areas of life activity and the age of onset when the disability occurred.

The Festus & Helen Stacy Foundation provides grants to non-profit organizations worldwide, especially those focusing on evangelism, leadership development, holistic ministries, and media outreach. Established in 1980, the foundation aims to support projects that address the needs of the marginalized and promote generous giving. Grants are typically awarded for specific initiatives in South Florida, nationally, and internationally, particularly in emerging nations. Organizations must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) to be eligible.

The Stoneleigh Fellowship offers visionary leaders funding to transform systems serving youth, focusing on innovative research and policy changes. It supports individuals from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to pursue impactful projects over two to three years. The Leo and Peggy Pierce Family Foundation focuses on ending hunger and food insecurity in the five-county Philadelphia region and Indian River County, Florida. Established in 1997, it supports organizations that provide direct services or advocacy efforts in this area. Grants are available to IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) organizations, allowing them to apply once every year. Grants up to $10,000 are available each cycle, with a focus on initiatives in art, culture, education, financial literacy, health, wellness, and veterans' services. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and demonstrate good financial standing to qualify for funding.

Truist Foundation

The Truist Foundation is committed to Truist Financial Corporation's (NYSE: TFC) purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities. Established in 2020, the foundation makes strategic investments in nonprofit organizations to help ensure the communities it serves have more opportunities for a better quality of life. The Truist Foundation's grants and activities focus on building career pathways to economic mobility and strengthening small businesses.

This year’s Inspire Awards seeks nonprofits supporting the career navigation and workforce development needs of workers across the United States. The challenge seeks applications that help individuals gain the skills, guidance, and support needed to access quality jobs, advance in their careers, and build long-term stability in an evolving world of work.

How are nonprofits providing innovative direct services, training programs, and career navigation supports for adult workers in the age of AI?

Challenge Dimensions

Nonprofit organizations have long been critical advocates and service providers for workers in the United States. Nonprofits provide workers necessary upskilling opportunities, AI literacy training, career navigation support, and wraparound services in conjunction with career pathways programming. All necessary for the modern workforce. Meeting the moment, Truist Foundation and MIT Solve want to hear the ways in which nonprofits headquartered in the Truist operating footprint are providing innovative career pathway programming in the age of AI. Although solutions don’t need to focus on generative AI specifically, teams should demonstrate how their career pathways programming align with the following dimensions:

• Training and Upskilling Programs – Providing holistic, accessible programming that equips workers with essential skills, industry-validated credentials, and technical literacy for the modern workplace.
• AI Readiness and Literacy – Offering high-quality training that helps workers understand generative AI and agentic technologies as augmented intelligence tools, helping to build practical skills like effective prompting, domain expertise application, and ethical use.
• Additional Wraparound Services and Basic Needs Support – Supporting unemployed and underemployed workers on their journey to economic mobility through comprehensive, integrated resources including childcare, transportation support, mentorship, mental health services, benefits navigation, and more.
• Career Navigation in the AI Economy – Enabling workers to navigate career choices with clarity and confidence by providing accessible information about how AI is reshaping job roles and industries, facilitating informed decisions about high-quality career trajectories that align with individual circumstances, and connecting workers to industry-validated credentials or trainings.

The CNX Foundation Grant aims to enhance the Appalachian region through strategic investments totaling $30 million. With a focus on sustainability and community development, the grant addresses pressing socio-economic challenges such as food insecurity, health and wellness for children, and technological access. By fostering local initiatives, CNX Foundation aspires to create measurable impacts that uplift communities and promote long-term growth, embodying their commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles.

Scranton Area Community Foundation is on a mission to enhance the quality of life for all people in Northeastern Pennsylvania through the development of organized philanthropy. A public 501c3 community foundation, the Scranton Area Community Foundation serves as a steward, a grantmaker, a charitable resource, and a catalyst for change.

As a steward and grantmaker, we manage more than 200 charitable funds established by philanthropic individuals in our community and have granted more than $18 million to assist the educational, human service, environmental, civic, and arts and cultural organizations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. We also manage assets of more than $31 million through two private foundations, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation and the Robert H. Spitz Foundation.

Tomorrow's Leaders Today (TLT) Grant Cycle

Tomorrow’s Leaders Today (TLT) is a youth leadership program of Leadership Lackawanna that provides high school juniors with the opportunity to meet with community leaders and decision-makers. In addition to leadership development, the students are also required to complete a philanthropy curriculum conducted by the Scranton Area Community Foundation. TLT seeks to help participants realize what they can do to make a difference in their community as young philanthropists and to further develop their leadership skills.

The Scranton Area Community Foundation is proud to partner with Leadership Lackawanna in introducing the concept of philanthropy and grantmaking to our region’s youth. The Scranton Area Community Foundation allocates funding for the TLT class to grant. Priority areas are chosen by the TLT students.

Grants up to $5,000 are available to charitable organizations whose programming addresses:

• Animal shelter expansion:
  • Examples of potential grants for this area include, but are not limited to
    • Projects that purchase equipment and/or supplies (i.e. crates, food, medicine) to meet demand of Animal Welfare facilities
    • Projects that build or renovate facilities to meet demand of Animal Welfare organizations
• Programs for those experiencing homelessness:
  • Examples of potential grants for this area include, but are not limited to:
    • Projects providing housing, food, or transportation for people experiencing homelessness
    • Projects providing access to education or workforce training for people experiencing homelessness
• Behavioral Health – Programming for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults:

    • Projects providing therapeutic and medical assistance to individuals 25 years of age and younger
    • Mentorship programs specifically serving individuals 25 years of age and younger with mental health issues

The William Penn Foundation's Arts Education School Partnership Programs aim to enhance student success in Philadelphia by increasing access to diverse, hands-on arts education led by skilled teaching artists. With a focus on youth engagement and creativity, these programs are designed for children aged 5-18 and strive to create safe spaces for self-expression and personal development. This initiative addresses the disparities in arts education access for low-income families, promoting social-emotional skills and critical thinking through innovative learning experiences.

The Dietrich Foundation Conneaut Lake, PA Fund Grant, established by William S. Dietrich II, supports 501(c)(3) organizations in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania. Focused on cultural, scientific, educational, and charitable efforts, the grant aims to enhance local community initiatives. Funded through the Dietrich Charitable Trusts, it ensures that eligible applicants can receive assistance for projects that benefit the community, promoting growth and development in the area.

The Anna B. Glauser Trust Grants provide financial support to organizations aiding physically handicapped individuals, particularly blind residents in Delaware County, PA. Established in memory of Willis K. Glauser, the trust awards 1-2 grants annually, ranging from $2,500 to $5,000. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) certified, while funding for salaries is typically excluded. This initiative reflects Anna Glauser's lifelong commitment to assisting the visually impaired community.

The Cigna Group Foundation is launching the Improving Youth Mental Health Grant, committing $9 million over three years to enhance mental health support for youth aged five to 18. This initiative targets post-pandemic challenges, offering resources to parents, caregivers, and youth service professionals. Nonprofits are encouraged to apply for funding between $100,000 and $150,000 to develop programs that promote social-emotional skills, enhance caregiver support, and improve access to mental health interventions in underserved communities.

The Adult Basic Education Direct Services program aims to enhance adult literacy and education, assisting individuals in gaining essential skills for employment and self-sufficiency. Funded through WIOA Title II, it addresses the needs of diverse adult learners, including those seeking high school equivalency and English language improvement. Emphasizing partnerships with local agencies, the program fosters community engagement while providing year-round, real-time instructional support to help participants achieve their educational and career goals.

The Edna W. Andrade Fund, a donor advised fund of the Philadelphia Foundation, offers grants between $5,000 and $25,000 to support local and national museums or nonprofit art organizations that benefit visual fine artists from Greater Philadelphia. Established in memory of Edna Andrade, a prominent artist of the Op Art movement, this fund aims to foster artistic initiatives and exhibitions, enriching the cultural landscape of the region.

2026 FCFP Birthday Grants for Lycoming County

Competitive grant program that supports nonprofit organizations with missions relating to arts and culture, education, health and human service, youth, environment, and economic development in Lycoming County.

The Forman Family Fund Grants support Southeastern Pennsylvania nonprofits that provide educational programs for youth aged 11 to 18 in areas such as photography, architectural drawing, and written arts. Annually, up to 10 grants of $40,000 each are available for direct program expenses, staff time, and materials. Eligible organizations must be located in the five-county region, have 501c3 status, and demonstrate a commitment to nondiscrimination and quality arts education.
