Armstrong County Community Foundation (The Community Foundation Serving the Heart of Western Pennsylvania)

In 1997 Merchants National Bank, an Armstrong County community bank, marked its 100th anniversary. The centennial celebration included a unique expression of gratitude to the community in the form of $100,000 to be used as a seed fund to initiate a community foundation for Armstrong County. The bank challenged the community to keep the principal balance of the endowed funds intact and spend only a portion of the interest earnings to ensure a lasting legacy.

Judy L. (Beveridge) Creel Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is established to honor the memory of Gary and Judy (Beveridge) Creel of East Franklin Township, Armstrong County.

Gary, the son of Clarence and Hally (Sharpe) Creel, was employed in the surface coal stripping industry and then owned and operated a retail tire sales business until his retirement. At the time of his passing, Gary was in the process of getting a patent approved for a canine orthopedic support device.

Judy, the daughter of Floyd "Ernie" and Dorothy (Reesman) Beveridge, was employed in the banking industry. In retirement, Judy designed tombstones/grave markers for both humans and pets. Judy also was a published author having written three books.

Gary and Judy met in high school and shared 55 years of marriage. Life was busy with work, family, and church responsibilities, but both found time to be there for others in their moment of need. Whether it was offering their time, professional skills or personal resources, their compassion was shared authentically and altruistically.

It is the desire of children, Marci and Ryan, to establish this scholarship to continue their parents' legacy of ordinary people doing what they could to help others, simply because it was the right thing to do. Matthew 6:3-4; James 2:15-17

Community Foundation of Henderson County

Community Foundation of Henderson County was incorporated in 1982 by a group of fourteen dedicated and compassionate local leaders with the immediate need to manage two funds - the William C. Armstrong Scholarship Fund and the Charlie Renfrow Scholarship Fund, in addition to providing a permanent vehicle for citizens to give back to their community.

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of the Rick Chapman Legacy League, created in memory of Rick, a beloved local entrepreneur who owned and operated Chuck Wagon Pizza in Ludington, Michigan, for many years.

Inspired by Rick's own path of starting his business at a young age, the scholarship supports students who are pursuing business education and entrepreneurship with the hope that recipients will eventually live and work in Mason County. The scholarship fund is administered by the Rick Chapman Legacy League Board, composed of Rick's high school friends who would visit Rick at Chuck Wagon when in town, longtime customers and neighbors from the community, and an overall eclectic mix of people from different walks of life that Rick welcomed. The board and several other Rick Chapman friends and fans host an annual golf outing near Rick's birthday in August to raise money for scholarships. Entry fees, sponsorships, and a silent auction contribute to the scholarship fund. The Rick Chapman Legacy League Scholarship honors Rick’s memory and commitment to fostering entrepreneurship. By investing in local students, the Legacy League hopes to inspire students to follow in Rick's footsteps, contributing to the vibrancy of the Mason County community.

Bethany Lutheran Church Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of the Bethany Lutheran Church Congregational Council, which established the Bethany Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Mason County.

In the 1870s, Danish immigrants to the Ludington area met to pursue a dream to worship God, provide Christian education, and support one another through fellowship. In 1878 they established the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, which later became Bethany Lutheran Church. Danish language worship services were held into the 1940s. A mural depicting Bethany's longest-serving pastor, The Reverend John Christensen, can be viewed from the parking lot west of the James Street Plaza. The congregation continued to worship and serve the community from its 1101 South Madison location until 2018 when, due to declining membership and financial support, it sold the church building to the Salvation Army and accepted the invitation of Grace Episcopal Church to share its building. Bethany held worship services there until March of 2019. As a memorial to all those who were a part of Bethany's ministry and in support of young people desiring post-high school education, Bethany's last act of service was establishing an endowed scholarship fund through the Community Foundation for Mason County.

Adam was a beloved student at Ludington Area Catholic School, where he attended through the eighth grade, and was a freshman at Ludington High School at the time of his passing. He was a board designer and a member of the Varsity Quiz Bowl Team at Ludington High School. Adam actively participated in Spelling Bees and Math Counts and was a state finalist in the You Be the Chemist competition. Family and Faith were also of the utmost importance in his life.

Rotary Club of Easton Centennial Trades Scholarship

Awarded to residents of Talbot County, who are nontraditional (adult) students.

The Foundation awards scholarships to nontraditional students, students who are not graduating from high school this academic year, who are continuing their education through degree or certificate programs, seminars, workshops, or customized training. The application is open throughout the year, and applications are reviewed and determined on a quarterly basis. 

Brooke & Trish Harwood Career and Technology Scholarship

Awarded to residents of Kent County, who are planning to attend a vocational, trade, or career school.

Sickle Cell Disease Pilot Program 2027

The SCD Pilot Program was established under New Jersey legislation (A4052) with funding appropriated for a three-year pilot. Beginning its third year (September-June) as a noncompeting continuation, the program supports Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in select municipalities in delivering coordinated, comprehensive care for individuals living with SCD. The program’s purpose is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing an integrated model that combines medical, behavioral, social, and educational services. It emphasizes strong communication pathways with external providers and ongoing education and outreach to patients, caregivers, staff, and the broader community. The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Human Services (NJDHS), oversees this initiative to address the complex healthcare needs of New Jerseyans affected by SCD.

SCD is a lifelong, inherited condition with several common types, including:

HbSS (Sickle Cell Anemia): The most severe and common form, caused by inheriting a sickle cell gene (“S”) from each parent. It predominantly affects individuals of African ancestry but can also impact people of Southern European, Middle Eastern, or Asian Indian descent.

HbSC (Sickle Cell Hemoglobin C Disease): A usually milder form, caused by inheriting a sickle cell gene from one parent and a gene for Hemoglobin C (“C”) from the other.

HbS Beta-Thalassemia: Results from inheriting a sickle cell gene (“S”) from one parent and a beta-thalassemia gene from the other. Severity varies depending on the beta-thalassemia type (“zero” is severe; “plus” is milder).

Symptoms vary widely and can change over time, ranging from mild to severe. Early signs may include jaundice, fatigue, pain, and swelling in the hands and feet. Serious complications include severe anemia, infections, bone and chest pain, stroke, and organ dysfunction. While SCD is present at birth, many infants do not show symptoms until four to six months of age or later.

Anthony Wunderle Memorial Scholarship Fund

Established by Lori and Greg Wunderle in memory of their son Anthony who had childhood leukemia. This scholarship is to provide educational opportunities for a higher education, accredited trade, or apprenticeship program for any cancer survivor or family member of a cancer patient, living or deceased.

Deb Del Zoppo and her family established a scholarship in memory of her nephew, Danny McCarty, after he passed away at the age of 26 in a motorcycle accident in Colorado. Danny was involved in the construction trades, so the focus of the two-year scholarship ($500 each year) is to support students who are going into that field of study.
