Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research

Recognizes an individual researcher who has made outstanding contributions (theoretical, experimental, computational, or technical) in plasma physics early in their career. Areas of plasma physics covered by the award include, but are not limited to: fundamental plasma physics, fusion plasmas, astrophysical or space plasmas, low-temperature plasmas, or high-energy-density plasmas.

The award consists of $5,000, a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient, and a travel reimbursement of up to $1,000 to attend the APS Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) meeting. Information on allowable travel expenses appears here.

The recipient will be asked to deliver an invited talk at the DPP meeting and will receive a meeting registration waiver.

The award will be presented annually.

The Prize consists of $5,000, an allowance for registration and travel to the meeting at which the Prize is awarded, and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient. Irwin Oppenheim Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to physics by early career scientists who publish in Physical Review E (PRE). The Landfall Foundation was established to support non-profit organizations and schools in the greater Wilmington area by providing individuals and businesses a meaningful way to support those in need. Our grants fund projects and programs in the areas of the arts, education, and health and welfare. All grant dollars remain local, benefitting the residents of New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

Our Mission

The mission of The Landfall Foundation is to provide support to non-profit organizations and schools serving Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties. Grants are awarded for well defined projects and programs in the areas of arts, education, and health and welfare, through a comprehensive vetting process.

Landfall Foundation: Macro Grants

Macro Grants Applications are only available to Organizations that were selected during the LOI process. $10,001 to $50,000. Approximately 3-5 will be awarded annually. These grants are designed for high-impact initiatives. These selective grants will focus on projects or programs that can bring about transformative change in the community. These may include capital projects designed to improve, expand or repair existing facilities or the purchase of major equipment that supports the organization’s mission.

The McCune Foundation's Training Mini-Grants support grassroots organizations in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties that empower marginalized populations to effect systemic change. By funding community organizing and social justice-oriented training, the Foundation aims to build social capital and enhance community capacity. Grants between $4,000 and $5,000 are available, covering up to 75% of training costs, ensuring that those who are most affected by social issues are engaged in the solutions.

The McCune Foundation provides funding to grassroots organizations in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties that empower economically and politically marginalized groups. Their grants support community-led initiatives focused on creating systemic change and enhancing social capital. Eligible applicants must demonstrate inclusive leadership and engage affected populations in project planning. The Foundation prioritizes projects that mobilize communities to address root causes of social issues, fostering collaboration and action for social justice.

Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize

The Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to physics and exceptional skills in lecturing to diverse audiences. The prize consists of $20,000, a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient, an allowance for travel to the APS Medal and Prize Ceremony and Reception in Washington, DC, and an invited talk at an APS March or April Meeting, plus expenses for the three lectures by the recipient given at an APS meeting, a research university, and a predominantly undergraduate institution. The prize will be presented annually.

The KEYS Grants program, a youth philanthropy initiative by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, empowers local high school students to enhance education in Kosciusko County. By providing funding for innovative educational projects, the program fosters creativity and collaboration among students. Eligible projects must serve the community's youth and promote hands-on learning experiences. This initiative not only enriches students' educational journeys but also aims to create lasting impacts for future generations.

Folklife

This grant program supports projects and activities which serve to identify, preserve and/or present Alabama folk traditions. Projects and activities may include festivals, field surveys, performances, exhibitions and documentation projects such as film, video, photography recordings, radio and publications.

Folklife Organizational Grant - Quick Assist Grants

Quick Assist Grants are for special, one-time needs unrelated to any other project or activity funded with a Council on the Arts grant. These grants fund unexpected or impromptu programs, opportunities, or other activities that are important to promote, share, or support the arts. Successful applications vary widely.

Quick Assist Grant applications may request between $500 and $2,500, with no matching expenses required to be provided by the applicant. Activities and expenses of a Quick Assist Grants may not overlap or support projects that are funded with another Council on the Arts grant of any kind.

The ACS Award in Pure Chemistry recognizes early career researchers for their outstanding contributions to fundamental research in pure chemistry. Established in 1931, the award includes a $5,000 prize and reimbursement for up to $1,000 in travel expenses to the award presentation meeting. Nominees must have less than 10 years of experience since their terminal degree and demonstrate exceptional research merit. Special consideration is given to originality and independence of thought in submitted research.

The OTS Research Fellowship Program offers graduate research fellowships for studies primarily conducted at its Costa Rica field stations. Open to graduate students from OTS member institutions, the program facilitates thesis-related research in tropical biology. This initiative honors the contributions of notable figures in the field and aims to support the next generation of researchers. Applications are accepted year-round, with a two-month advance submission requirement before project commencement.

The Translational Medicine Postdoctoral Fellowship by the PhRMA Foundation supports U.S. and non-U.S. citizens in multidisciplinary research training at accredited U.S. universities. The program aims to enhance credentials in translational medicine, focusing on turning laboratory observations into effective medical interventions. The fellowship includes a stipend of $60,000 per year for 12 to 24 months, promoting innovative research that addresses unmet clinical needs in various scientific disciplines.

The Alexander McCausland Charitable Trust Grant supports organizations that promote the humane treatment and care of animals in Roanoke, Virginia, and surrounding areas. Focused on preventing cruelty and ensuring health, protection, and appropriate shelter for animals, the Trust prioritizes grants to 501(c)(3) exempt organizations. Notably, it does not fund entities that engage in euthanasia. This initiative reflects Mr. McCausland's dedication to animal welfare and community support.

The Emerging Justice Fund Grant, offered by Social Justice Fund Northwest, aims to support grassroots organizing in communities affected by systemic injustices. With a funding cycle starting in February, the grant prioritizes organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Eligible groups can apply for a one-year grant of $10,000, with a final deadline of September 12th. This initiative emphasizes unrestricted funding to empower marginalized communities and foster long-term social justice solutions.

The Jack A. & Gertrude W. Wilson Animal Welfare Fund, established by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, supports local animal welfare programs in Mississippi. It provides grants to public charities that focus on the welfare of companion animals. Eligible organizations must be located in specific counties and can apply for funding for various programs, including spay and neuter initiatives and community education efforts. Grants are limited to 8% for administrative costs.
