Community Foundation of Greater New Britain

Since 1941, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has been the area’s signature resource for those who, like us, aspire to make our community a better place.

The Foundation has been at the forefront of positive community change and charitable impact since The Stanley Works and New Britain Machine pooled $30,000 in gifts before World War II to begin what was then called the New Britain Foundation for Public Giving. Primarily a grant maker for many years, providing funding to support New Britain non-profits and their programs, our Foundation today is leading and collaborating to shape the Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington of tomorrow.

First Years First Early Childhood Grants

The goal of the Initiative is to support optimal learning and development of children, birth through preschool so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. 

First Years First Strategies

Increase Social Emotional Learning (SEL) among young children to support school readiness, success and outcomes. Support SEL training for parents/caregivers, teachers and other adults that work with young children.

Strengthen Parent/Caregiver Education by building skills, knowledge and relationships in one or more of the following ways: 1) increase knowledge of child development, early brain development and the lasting impact of high quality early childhood education, 2) support deepening relationships among caregivers, educators and young children that increase and incorporate Social Emotional Learning, 3) strengthen parenting and caregiver skills so that children are supported and ready to learn and succeed in school.

Support Foundational Skill Development that is age appropriate in math, pre-writing, and pre-literacy among young children and families.

Support teacher training that increases skill, knowledge and expertise and teachers’ ability to support the optimal learning and development of children birth through preschool.

The General Grant Cycle by the Main Street Community Foundation supports community organizations in Bristol and surrounding areas. Since 1995, the Foundation has positively impacted local residents through competitive grants aimed at addressing basic needs, access to opportunities, and vibrant community projects. Eligibility requires tax-exempt status under 501(c)(3) and compliance with prior reporting. Preference is given to initiatives that respond to community needs, leverage funding, and promote collaboration among nonprofits.

The Plainville Community Fund, established in 2006, serves as a vital resource for charitable programs enhancing the lives of residents in Plainville. Grants are available for public institutions or private tax-exempt organizations that benefit the community. Priority is given to proposals that demonstrate sustainability and community impact through collaborations, addressing emerging needs, and leveraging additional funding resources.

The Richard and M. Terrye Blackstone Scholarship Fund, established by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, supports East Hartford students pursuing degrees in the Arts, Political Science, or Education. This fund honors Richard and M. Terrye Blackstone and emphasizes the importance of community service. Eligible candidates must demonstrate academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular activities. Annually, 1 to 2 scholarships are awarded, contributing to the Foundation's mission of enhancing educational opportunities since 1945.

The Pomeroy-Brace Scholarship Fund, established by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, provides financial support to motivated students from the Greater Hartford region. This scholarship aims to assist individuals with financial need who demonstrate high aspirations and self-motivation for academic achievement. Since its inception, the Hartford Foundation has awarded nearly $30 million in scholarships, helping numerous local students pursue higher education opportunities.

The Charles Nelson Robinson Fund Grant, established in 1970, aims to enhance educational, human services, and healthcare programs for underserved populations in Hartford, Connecticut. This grant supports initiatives that align with its mission, with a duration of one year. Organizations applying must have their principal office in Hartford and will receive notification of decisions within 2-3 months. Notably, capital project requests are not eligible for funding.

The Urban Green and Community Gardens Grant Program supports distressed municipalities and environmental justice communities in enhancing urban green spaces. It provides funding for projects such as community gardens and green infrastructure, aiming to improve public enjoyment and environmental education. Eligible applicants must be municipalities or registered non-profits, with a focus on projects that demonstrate public accessibility. This match-share reimbursement program requires applicants to secure 50% of the total project cost.

The Housing for Everyone Grant Competition, part of the 2026 Initiative, aims to support eviction prevention in low-to moderate-income communities. By funding innovative organizations, the competition seeks to provide stability for renters, enabling them to stay in their homes and communities.

Farmington Bank Community Foundation

The Farmington Bank Community Foundation, which continues the legacy of the former Farmington Bank, provides financial support to non-profit organizations and community programs improve economic viability and well-being of residents and communities. The Foundation’s average grant size is generally around $8,000 with a maximum grant size of $20,000. The Foundation may make larger grants in special circumstances. The Foundation awards grants over a one-year period and generally an organization is eligible to receive one grant each calendar year. The Foundation generally awards flexible grants for organizations and programs that are aligned with our mission and priorities. This may take the form of ongoing program support, or one-time start-up costs (including capital). In some circumstances, the Foundation may consider general support for an organization’s core work. This is reserved for nonprofits with a proven track record of impact and a history of Foundation support.

Cycle One

The Foundation accepts applications from organizations working in the SURVIVING part of the economic mobility continuum to provide a social safety net and stability to individuals and families. This includes access to food, housing, health, mental health and other basic human needs. Grants are made across our geographic focus.

Farmington Bank Community Foundation

The Farmington Bank Community Foundation, which continues the legacy of the former Farmington Bank, provides financial support to non-profit organizations and community programs improve economic viability and well-being of residents and communities. The Foundation’s average grant size is generally around $8,000 with a maximum grant size of $20,000. The Foundation may make larger grants in special circumstances. The Foundation awards grants over a one-year period and generally an organization is eligible to receive one grant each calendar year. The Foundation generally awards flexible grants for organizations and programs that are aligned with our mission and priorities. Cycle Two

The Foundation offers a second grant cycle, accepting applications from organizations working in the STRIVING part of the economic mobility continuum to provide support to individuals and families that are building skills and working towards their personal version of a good life. This includes various educational and career development programs and other programs focused on economic mobility. Grants in New Britain, Bristol, and Farmington Valley will receive priority consideration.

OAHSTRIDES Fund

OAHSTRIDES is the philanthropic arm of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford, PC. They work with under-resourced populations in the Greater Hartford Community to provide the support needed to build essential life skills and live healthier lifestyles. Their Mission is to improve physical, emotional, and mental health with an emphasis on movement and mobility.

For the 2026 grant cycle, OAHSTRIDES is focused on supporting veterans in the Greater Hartford community through adaptive physical activity, mental wellness initiatives, and opportunities for meaningful community connection and reintegration. We recognize that many veterans carry visible and invisible impacts of service, including physical injuries, chronic pain, mobility challenges, post-service transition difficulties, and social isolation.

Through this funding opportunity, OAHSTRIDES seeks to partner with organizations that honor veterans’ experiences and are committed to empowering them through movement-based and wellness-centered programs. We aim to support initiatives that foster resilience, restore confidence and connection, and promote lifelong health and well-being for those who have served.

Hartford County graduating seniors pursuing engineering or medical-related bachelor’s degrees can access funding through the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, with awards from US $500 - US $30,000. Eligible students must attend Berlin or New Britain High Schools, hold at least a C+ average, and may receive preference for demonstrated financial need.

The Rev. Vouros Fund Grant, managed by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, honors Reverend Carl G. Vouros by supporting impactful initiatives in the community. This fund prioritizes grants to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status, focusing on areas such as education, human services, and cultural enrichment. The Foundation aims to inspire philanthropy and strengthen the local fabric through strategic partnerships, ensuring that the legacy of Reverend Vouros continues to benefit the Greater New Britain area.

The Tinty Foundation Grant, established in 2010 by Beatrice A. Tinty and John S. Manning, aims to support youth athletics, public safety, and animal care. The foundation funds organizations recognized under IRS 501(c)(3) and prioritizes grassroots efforts that bridge ethnic and economic gaps. Key focus areas include after-school programs, public safety services, and animal rights initiatives. The JetBlue Foundation is dedicated to enhancing aviation-related education and STEM initiatives, aiming to inspire future aviation leaders. Events must acknowledge the Community Foundation's support in their publicity and should ideally take place within the four-town service area, ensuring a vibrant and connected community.

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB) offers a Capacity Building Consultant or Mini Grant of up to $2,000 for nonprofit organizations engaged in the CFGNB Capacity Building Program. This funding aims to support external consultants or small projects that enhance organizational capacity, efficiency, and sustainability. The grant focuses on key areas such as governance, fundraising, marketing, technology, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, fostering strategic growth within the community.

The TD Bank Community Sponsorships Program, supported by the TD Charitable Foundation, provides funding for events and activities that positively impact communities from Maine to Florida. This initiative aims to enhance community awareness and foster partnerships among diverse groups, promoting economic development, cultural enrichment, and social responsibility. Organizations can apply for funding to support community-oriented programs, with applications reviewed quarterly. It's essential to submit applications at least 90 days before the event deadlines.

The PLTW Gateway program, in collaboration with Burns & McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by expanding access to Project Lead The Way initiatives in eligible communities. By providing grants for program expansion, the initiative encourages schools to implement new PLTW units and train teachers, empowering students with essential skills for future careers. This partnership seeks to inspire a new generation of learners through hands-on, real-world challenges, thereby fostering greater participation in STEM fields across various regions.

Front-line educational workers in Hartford County, Connecticut can apply for Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation’s Community Grants, which provide up to US $2,000 for specific, one-time, education-related needs in underserved communities. Funding goes to nonprofit or tax-exempt organizations, such as public schools, for projects that can be fully completed within one year.

The Marjorie Moore Charitable Foundation Grant supports charitable projects in Kensington, Connecticut, focusing on education, arts, environmental, and health services for underserved populations. Established in 1957, it prioritizes organizations classified as 501(c)(3) charities, providing one-year grants with potential multi-year support for capital projects. Preference is given to those delivering human services or health care programming, ensuring impactful community development and support for local needs.

The Summer Programs Grants aim to enhance summer programming for Hartford children and individuals with disabilities in the region. This competitive grant encourages 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to provide safe, enriching environments while supporting working families. The program prioritizes cultural competency and requires tracking of participant involvement, emphasizing the importance of career exposure through counselor-in-training opportunities. Grants will be awarded to those demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Jean Griswold Foundation (JGF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Caregivers through educational opportunities and scholarships. 

Our Mission

The mission of the Jean Griswold Foundation is to support Caregivers by providing educational scholarships* to enable them to further their training, enhance their careers, and better assist the clients they serve.

By offering educational scholarships*, our Foundation will not only make a positive impact on the Caregivers themselves, but also the clients they assist and the home healthcare agencies where they are employed, as well as help advance the overarching home-care industry.

Scholarships will be paid directly to the federally accredited educational institutions of the winning Scholars’ choosing.

Empowering Caregivers Through Education

The Jean Griswold Foundation Scholarship Program awards scholarships to deserving Caregivers who wish to further their education in a care-related field. Applicants do not have to be associated with Griswold in any way, and the funds will be paid directly to the institution where the caregiver will be receiving education.
