Health Education Scholarships

One of the many keys to maintaining a healthy, prosperous community is ensuring a sustainable supply of excellent health care providers. To achieve this, Samaritan Health Services offers numerous scholarships to local students pursuing careers as doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well continuing education or specialty training for current medical providers.

Each year, Samaritan awards more than $25,000 in scholarships for health care education to ensure the communities we serve receive the best care possible well into the future.

Nurse Education Scholarship

The Nurse Education Scholarship is intended to provide financial support for the continued education of an individual who desires to further their career in the nursing field. The scholarship’s purpose is to support caregivers and Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) who are pursuing ongoing education. The funds will be sent directly to the college for the student’s tuition and other expenses. 

The Louis J. Appell, Jr., Preservation Fund for Central Pennsylvania supports local preservation efforts by funding maintenance and restoration of historic places in specific Pennsylvania counties. Eligible applicants include public agencies and non-profit organizations, with a matching requirement for grant amounts. Grants aim to enhance public awareness of the region's heritage while addressing preservation challenges through technical assistance and financial support for essential restoration activities.

The Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award honors exemplary nonprofit organizations in the U.S. that foster collaborative partnerships across sectors. Annually, a national competition showcases numerous organizations demonstrating impactful community partnerships. Six organizations receive recognition, including the Thomas J. Moran Award, which offers $100,000, and the Frances R. Hesselbein Award, granting $75,000. Grants, capped at $1,700, aim to inspire positive outcomes within the community, focusing on projects that comply with specific eligibility criteria and the grant year timeline.

The John Crain Kunkel Foundation Grant supports initiatives that enhance the quality of life for individuals in Pennsylvania. Focused on charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, the foundation prioritizes projects in Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Perry, and Juniata Counties. Grants may extend to organizations outside Pennsylvania that benefit communities within the state. Applications are accepted from January 1st to September 1st, with specific eligibility requirements including proof of tax-exempt status.

The PPL Foundation offers Energizing Education Grants to support equitable, high-quality educational opportunities for all students. Grants of up to $50,000 are available for programs focused on STEM, literacy, and college readiness, particularly emphasizing careers in the energy sector. The University Center at Harrisburg Grant Fund supports non-profit organizations focused on skill and workforce development in specific Pennsylvania counties. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations or partner with them. The fund prioritizes projects that directly benefit local communities. However, it does not support advertising, capital campaigns, or projects with insufficient sustainability plans. Grant seekers can apply for projects that align with their needs and the fund's guidelines.

The Kids Trust Fund Grant aims to support nonprofit organizations focused on helping children aged 0-18 who have suffered from abuse or neglect. Established in memory of Gary L. Houck, Jr., this fund encourages innovative programs that enhance existing services and empower affected families. Eligible activities include therapeutic recreation, early intervention, and mental health services. The PPL Foundation, a corporate funder, offers Powering Equity Grants to support nonprofit organizations focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Grants of up to $50,000 are available for initiatives that foster educational success and community revitalization within the 29 Pennsylvania counties served by PPL Electric Utilities. Eligible organizations must demonstrate their impact on these communities, with an emphasis on protecting underrepresented residents. This grant program aims to enhance the quality of life in the region.

The Central PA Architects Foundation Fund Architecture Scholarship, offered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, supports students from select counties in Pennsylvania who are enrolled in architecture degree programs. This scholarship aims to foster educational opportunities for individuals demonstrating financial need and commitment to the field of architecture, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of local communities.

The Conrad Siegel “Numbers Matter” Community Scholarship Fund, established by Conrad M. Siegel, Inc., supports underserved students in Central PA pursuing degrees in math, finance, and related fields. This initiative aims to enhance diversity in financial professions by alleviating the financial burden of higher education for students from minority backgrounds. The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, dedicated to strengthening local communities, manages this scholarship to empower the next generation of leaders in these disciplines.

The EITC Opportunity Scholarship, offered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, provides funding for students in the lowest 15% achieving schools in Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, and Perry counties. This initiative aims to support students in attending out-of-district or private schools, enhancing educational opportunities for those from low-income households. Berks County Community Foundation

Berks County Community Foundation was founded in 1994 to help individuals, families, organizations and businesses achieve their charitable objectives. Since that time, the foundation has grown to manage hundreds of charitable funds. Each year, the funds distribute millions of dollars in scholarships and grants to support local students and nonprofit organizations and causes.

Darrell & Gloria Rank K9 Corps Fund and Richard Groff & Meda Kern K9 Corps Endowment

The Darrell and Gloria Rank K9 Corps Fund distributes grants to governmental entities in Berks County for the acquisition, training, and ongoing maintenance of their K9 Corps. The Richard Groff and Meda Kern K9 Corps Endowment Fund distributes grants in Berks County and contiguous counties (Lehigh, Montgomery, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Schuylkill) for the acquisition of protective equipment, training, education, and ongoing maintenance of any municipal law enforcement entity, local police, or county police force having a K9 Corps.

Frank Girod, MD, Medical Scholarship

The Frank Girod, MD, Medical Scholarship was established by the Lebanon Community Hospital Development Council and was funded by numerous contributions made by the late Girod’s friends and family.

The Girod Medical Scholarship is awarded to medical students in honor of the lifetime contribution to health care made by Girod of Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital and to assist new students of medicine to make similar contributions. The scholarship is coordinated by the Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation and is designed to help residents of east Linn County who are attending medical school.

The Arts for All Partnership Grant, established in 2015, focuses on enhancing arts accessibility for underserved communities in the Capital Region. This collaborative initiative, backed by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, prioritizes nonprofit programs that promote cultural appreciation through free performances, ticket subsidies, and educational outreach. Grants of up to $5,000 are available, emphasizing projects that engage diverse audiences and ensure sustainable arts engagement.

The Gail Deimler Charitable Fund Grant, managed by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, supports projects that benefit individuals and groups in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, Franklin, Lebanon, and Northern York Counties. Eligible applicants include registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits and those with fiscal sponsors. The fund prioritizes healthcare services and programs for people in need, continuing Gail Deimler's legacy of generosity and community support.

The PPL Foundation's Empowering Communities Grants provide up to $50,000 to support initiatives that enhance education, workforce development, and community revitalization. Targeting nonprofits in the PPL Electric Utilities region, these grants focus on environmental stewardship, economic development, and promoting sustainable communities. Eligible organizations must demonstrate their impact in improving community quality of life, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applications are limited to one per organization per grant cycle.
