Best Renewable Energy Grants in Massachusetts

Nonprofit organizations running renewable energy and broader sustainability projects in Massachusetts and other eligible states can apply for US $50,000 - US $400,000 in funding from Green Mountain Energy’s Sun Club Sustainability Grant. Focus areas include rooftop solar, energy efficiency, clean transportation, education, resource conservation, and sustainable agriculture, with awards based on environmental, social, and financial impact.

Eligible Massachusetts state entities planning to replace fossil-fuel systems with efficient electric or renewable thermal equipment can apply for the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources’ Public Entity Decarbonization Grant, with awards up to US $2,450,000. Funding supports heating, cooling, water heating, maintenance, landscaping, and commercial kitchen electrification projects at existing state facilities, including those advancing renewable and sustainable energy goals.

The Innovation Ecosystem Program (IEP) offers grants to Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs) in Massachusetts, aiming to support early-stage climatetech entrepreneurs. The program features two tracks: Track 1 provides up to $120,000 for programming support, while Track 2 includes the same amount plus access to a fellowship funding pool of up to $900,000. This initiative focuses on enhancing startup programs and advancing research translation into viable climatetech businesses.

The EmPower Massachusetts Implementation Grants, offered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), provide funding to enhance energy access for underserved communities. Grants range from $50,000 to $150,000 and are aimed at implementing community-based projects that address energy burdens. This initiative supports innovative solutions and strengthens organizational capacity, ultimately contributing to the Commonwealth’s clean energy goals and fostering equitable access to clean energy benefits.

The EmPower Massachusetts program, managed by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, provides crucial funding ranging from $5,000 to $150,000 for innovative projects that enhance clean energy access for underserved communities. This initiative supports capacity building and the exploration of novel solutions, helping organizations implement impactful programs. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, making it easier for communities to engage in clean energy advancements and contribute to the state's climate goals.

The MassCEC CriticalMass Program supports growth-stage climatetech startups by providing up to $1,000,000 in grant funding, specialized services, and partner matchmaking. This initiative aims to address significant challenges such as capital needs and regulatory complexities faced by these startups. By proposing projects that tackle decarbonization challenges, successful applicants will contribute to the advancement of Massachusetts' clean energy economy and help establish the state as a leader in climate innovation.

Public K-12 schools, districts, and educational collaboratives in Massachusetts can receive up to US $250,000 in low- or no-cost technical assistance for decarbonization planning and energy-efficient school facilities. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center supports renewable and sustainable energy upgrades through comprehensive building assessments, decarbonization roadmaps, focused studies, and renewable energy feasibility and REC analyses.

The Catalyst and DICES programs, managed by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), provide grants of up to $75,000 for early-stage climate technology projects. Catalyst supports researchers and companies in prototype development, while DICES focuses on funding underrepresented applicants in the cleantech sector. Both initiatives aim to foster innovation, stimulate commercialization, and ensure equitable access to resources and mentoring, contributing to Massachusetts' clean energy economy and climate leadership.

The Climate Service Corps Grant, offered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), aims to support organizations that provide training and career opportunities in energy efficiency and clean heating for youth ages 18-24, particularly from underserved communities. This grant offers funding of up to $375,000 over two years for implementation and planning of workforce development programs, promoting the growth of the clean energy sector and advancing Massachusetts' climate goals.

The Climate-Critical Workforce Training, Equipment & Infrastructure Grants aim to equip Massachusetts residents for the growing clean energy workforce, projected to expand by over 34,000 jobs by 2030. These grants provide up to $800,000 in funding for organizations that facilitate career pathways and upskilling in climate-critical occupations. Applicants can focus on various strands including training for new workers and upskilling for existing employees, ensuring a skilled workforce to meet state climate goals.

Summary

Through this Request for Proposals (“RFP”), the Massachusetts Clean Energy Technology Center (“MassCEC”) is offering Students and Young Adults Equity Workforce Career Awareness and Training Grants. The Grants help provide direct funding and technical assistance support to organizations interested in career awareness and training programming focused on supporting students1 and young adults who are part of one or more of the following populations:

• Individuals from Environmental Justice (“EJ”) Neighborhoods or low-income communities;
• Members of federally recognized or state-acknowledged tribes;
• Members of underrepresented communities in the clean energy workforce; and
• Current or former workers from the fossil fuel industry (“Fossil Fuel Workers”).

Strand B: Career Pathway Training with Work-based or Learning-based Opportunities

Green School Works Grants

The Challenge: Decarbonize Public Schools

Massachusetts’ approximately 1,800 public school buildings are responsible for about 880,000 metric tons of carbon every year. Electrifying and decarbonizing these buildings represents a significant opportunity for the state to reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2050. However, with the increased costs of construction and competing capital needs, districts need additional resources for the installation and upgrades of clean energy infrastructure.

About Green School Works Grants

Green School Works grants provide K-12 public schools with funding to implement projects that improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, or mitigate the impacts of climate change. Up to 15% of an award's total funds can be used for project “soft costs,” such as design or project management.

Up to $19 million will be available to schools for this round of funding. Awards may range from $50,000 up to $5 million for projects with a larger scope that opt for a recoverable grant of at least $2 million. See Section 8 (Budget & Award Limits) of the RFP for details on recoverable grants.

The Challenge: Overcome Barriers Facing Underrepresented Businesses Entering and Growing in the Clean Energy Sector

By 2030, the clean energy workforce is projected to grow by 34%, or more than 34,000 workers, to meet the state’s climate goals. New and expanding underrepresented businesses focused on the design, manufacture, installation, and maintenance of clean energy and decarbonization projects are crucial to meeting the Commonwealth’s climate goals. These businesses put climate solutions into practice, foster environments that attract and support a diversified workforce, and pave the way to an equitable energy transition for environmental justice communities. Unfortunately, most underrepresented businesses face barriers to entry and growth. Regardless of sector, underrepresented businesses are denied access to capital at a much higher rate, face selection bias for projects, and often start with less personal wealth and social capital—all of which exacerbate the challenges that all businesses face during their start-up and early growth phases.​

About CUBS Grants

Climate-Critical Underrepresented Business Support (CUBS) Grants provide up to $800,000 in grant funds and technical support to applicants to support the expansion of services through a regional “Hub and Spoke” model.

This model provides accessible and uniform support through regional Hubs that will offer a suite of baseline core services designed to help underrepresented businesses become “business ready” to bid successfully on clean energy procurements. Spoke partners will offer complementary or additional services designed to enhance Hub services and further help underrepresented businesses pivot and grow in the clean energy sector.

This funding is not intended to benefit a single underrepresented business. Successful applicants propose projects that address barriers faced by underrepresented business, tackle both supply and demand needs, provide comprehensive wraparound services for individuals participating in the program, leverage existing support systems, and establish a robust cross-referral system between Hub and Spoke partnerships.

About the 2030 Fund

The $50M 2030 Fund is a signal to the market that Massachusetts is committed to the commercialization of climate technologies. MassCEC invests impactfully and countercyclically in Massachusetts’ most promising climate technology innovators. Our investments support climatetech companies as they de-risk their technology, reach early commercial milestones, and attract private funding for growth.  

Climatetech encompasses a wide range of tech solutions across sectors that further mitigation, adaptation, and resilience. Portfolio companies work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for and respond to the impacts of climate change, and/or serve as enabling solutions to achieve the Commonwealth’s climate goals. We invest across seven major sectors: energy; industry and manufacturing; transportation; buildings; agriculture, food and nature; carbon management; and adaptation and resilience.

The 2030 Fund invests in a variety of financial instruments, including SAFEs, convertible notes, equity, and venture debt. Investments typically range from $100k-$600k per check and may total $1.5M cumulatively. MassCEC is able to provide more patient capital than a typical private investor. Deploying strategic state capital, with no artificial pressures of fund lifetimes, the 2030 Fund can invest counter-cyclically, back founders through challenging market conditions, and work for successful long-term exits. 

MassCEC considers new investments on a rolling basis. The timeline from pitch to close of investment is typically three to five months.

Under the leadership of MassDEP, the Clean Energy Results Program is an integrated energy and environmental partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (“DOER”) and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center  that reduces regulatory or other barriers to clean and energy efficient project development across the state. A cornerstone of this partnership has been the development of a streamlined "Gap" Energy Grant funding model that has helped municipal water utilities reduce their energy usage, operating costs, and improve the environment. This grant program “fills the funding gap” by leveraging incentives from energy utilities and other funding sources to jump-start energy efficiency and clean energy generation projects.

Business Builds: Climatetech

Business Builds: Climatetech is a competitive funding initiative created by the Mass Leads Act. It provides capital grants between $500K - $2M to help for-profit companies producing critical climate technologies make the capital investments needed to scale in or relocate to Massachusetts.
