The Environment Pillar Award by Honda supports nonprofit organizations and schools in the U.S. focused on sustainability. Grants aim to reduce environmental impact through programs in decarbonization, clean energy, and efficient resource use. Eligible projects must align with Honda's mission and primarily benefit communities where Honda associates live and work. Organizations can apply for up to two grants, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria, including tax-exempt status under the IRS.

The Lloyd Braithwaite Scholarship, offered by the Department of Sociology at Western Michigan University, provides $1,000 to full-time undergraduate criminal justice students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. This scholarship does not require financial need and is awarded in two installments of $500 for the fall and spring semesters. Applicants must submit a resume and three letters of recommendation by February 1st to be considered for this opportunity.

The Lanny Wilde Scholarship, offered by the WMU Department of Sociology, supports undergraduate students who are currently employed as WMU Public Safety Officers and enrolled in a Criminal Justice Program. With a total award of $500 per semester, this scholarship aims to ease the financial burden on dedicated students pursuing higher education. Nominations are forwarded by the Director of WMU Public Safety to Dr. Zoann Snyder by February 1st each year.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

Since awarding our first $500 scholarship in 1987, the Saginaw Community Foundation has awarded college scholarships to area students totaling more than $13.7 million, thanks to our generous donors. Each year, over 500 college-bound or career and technical education students benefit from our scholarship awards.

Margaret L. Palmer Scholarship

Margaret L. Palmer was born in Newberry, Michigan. She received her teaching certificate in 1927 from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. In 1956, Miss Palmer moved to Saginaw to teach first grade at North Elementary School. Retiring in 1974 after 46 years of service, Miss Palmer’s teaching made a difference in the lives of countless young people.

William H. Palmer established this scholarship in honor of his sister. “Education was so important to her,” remembered Bill, “I can still recall the opening days of school. Her enthusiasm was just bubbling. You couldn’t help but realize how teaching was more than just a job for her.”

“She influenced so many people. People still come up to me and tell me how Margaret made a difference in their lives or in the lives of someone they know. There were no bad youngsters as far as she was concerned. Good teachers like Margaret are necessary to inspire young minds. That’s why the Margaret L. Palmer Scholarship is designated for those interested in elementary education.”

The A.A. Van Elslander Foundation provides grants to Michigan-based non-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3). Since 2016, it has contributed over $30 million to support initiatives focused on children, health, and human services. The foundation encourages self-sustainability among grantees and invites unsolicited inquiries each September, maintaining a commitment to non-discrimination and public benefit in its funding.

The NRA Foundation: Michigan Grants provides vital financial support for educational and public service programs related to shooting sports. The foundation focuses on promoting firearms safety, educating individuals about firearms history, and conducting research to enhance firearms safety techniques. Eligible organizations include government entities and recognized nonprofits, while discrimination based on protected characteristics is prohibited. This initiative aims to foster community engagement through grants that benefit youth and promote responsible firearm use.

The Georgia E. Doles Walker Emergency Grant at Western Michigan University provides crucial financial assistance to undergraduate sociology students facing unexpected expenses. This grant, up to $500, is designed to alleviate financial burdens by covering costs for books, supplies, or travel related to education. However, it is important to note that funds cannot be used for tuition or fees. Preference is given to applicants who contribute to the diversity and multiculturalism of the university community.

The Emergency Community Water Assistance Grants in Michigan provide vital support for rural communities facing water emergencies. Eligible entities can apply for grants to construct or repair water infrastructure, ensuring safe drinking water access. This program responds to various disasters, including droughts and chemical spills, helping communities recover and maintain essential water services. With funding up to $1 million, the initiative fosters partnerships and sustainable practices, ultimately enhancing public health and environmental resilience.

The WMU Department of Political Science offers the United Nations/Kalamazoo Chapter Scholarship Award to outstanding undergraduates majoring in International and Comparative Politics. This scholarship recognizes academic excellence and considers factors like extracurricular involvement and study abroad participation. Eligible candidates must be in their junior or senior year and have completed at least one year of study at WMU. Preference is given to students with a record of activism and international engagement.

The Great Lakes Foundation Grant supports projects aimed at preserving wilderness areas and promoting marine safety in the Great Lakes region. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the foundation has awarded over $318,212 since its inception in 1993. Grants have funded various initiatives, including breakwater construction and academic research, to enhance appreciation and safety of the marine environment for both members and the general public.

The Peter Renstrom Prize, established in 2006 at Western Michigan University, honors a senior political science student intending to attend law school. Named after Dr. Peter Renstrom, an expert in constitutional law, this award recognizes academic excellence, requiring a minimum GPA of 3.5. The prize aims to support students from any department, highlighting the university's commitment to fostering future leaders in law and public service.

The Kourdie-Elshafei Scholarship provides $2500 to undergraduate students in Western Michigan University's Political Science Department. Established by alumna Touline Kourdie Elshafei, this scholarship aims to support students with a minimum GPA of 3.15 who demonstrate financial need and have junior or senior status. The Dr. Claude and Nancy Phillips Dissertation Research Award at Western Michigan University provides up to $500 annually to support doctoral students in political science with their dissertation research. The Martin Luther King/César Chavez/Rosa Parks Future Faculty Fellowship at Western Michigan University aims to support academically or economically disadvantaged doctoral candidates in their final dissertation stage. Established in 1986, this fellowship provides financial aid averaging around $33,000 to help students complete their degrees. Recipients must fulfill a three-year teaching or administrative obligation at a postsecondary institution in Michigan, ensuring a commitment to education and community service.

The Mark Denenfeld Memorial Endowed Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate political science majors at Western Michigan University. This scholarship, established in memory of Mark Denenfeld, provides up to $500 for the academic year. Eligible candidates must be senior political science majors with a strong academic record and community service involvement. Preference is given to those with more completed credit hours in political science. Applications are accepted annually.

The Lawrence Ziring Endowed Scholarship, awarded by the WMU Department of Political Science, supports graduate students who excel academically. Established in memory of Lawrence Ziring, a distinguished faculty member, this annual scholarship amounts to approximately $1,000. Preference is given to those with higher completed hours in the field.

The George Klein Scholarship at Western Michigan University supports undergraduate political science majors for study abroad in Central and East European Studies. Established in memory of Dr. George Klein, this annual award ranges from $500 to $750, encouraging students to immerse themselves in the political landscape of eligible countries such as Poland and Hungary. Preference is given to those in the WMU study abroad program, particularly in the Czech Republic, fostering international academic experiences.

Generally the Community Foundation's scholarships are awarded to applicants who have high financial need. Applicants with household income exceeding $100,000 are less likely to be awarded, but applying will allow you to be considered for targeted scholarships.

TowerPinkster Scholarship

Open to high school seniors graduating from a Michigan public high school, studying architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, or structural engineering with a minimum 3.25 GPA.

The Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform Grant by The Joyce Foundation aims to create safer communities in the Great Lakes region. It focuses on reducing gun violence, addressing racial disparities in the justice system, and promoting violence intervention strategies. The foundation invites innovative proposals that support these goals, emphasizing research, policy advocacy, and community engagement to effectively address the challenges of gun violence and promote racial equity.

Scholarships

CFHZ awards over $1 million in scholarships each year for students to attend schools of higher education throughout the nation. Our scholarships are possible thanks to the generosity of donors who invest in our community’s future by furthering the education of others.

All Holland/Zeeland area individuals interested in post-secondary education are encouraged to apply for CFHZ scholarships.

The Foundation proudly administers over 100 scholarships, each with unique eligibility criteria that must be met before a candidate can be considered.

Samuel Meengs Scholarship

• Graduating senior from one of the following high schools: Black River, Calvary Schools of Holland, Holland Christian, Holland High School, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, or Zeeland West
• Enrolling at Hope College
• Financial need, a consideration (encouraged to submit the page of the FAFSA Submission Summary showing the Student Aid Index amount)
• GPA of 4.0 or greater
• Involvement in high school sports, music, or the arts preferred
• This scholarship is potentially renewable and supports one student at a time.

Open to undergraduate students attending a college in the state of Michigan who are studying technology-related fields with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference to Challenge Scholar students through 2032.
