Midland Area Youth Action Council Mini-Grants give us the opportunity to invest in youth philanthropists (young people who are already working to make the world a better place!) and community adults who invest their time and energy into improving the lives of our area’s young people.

Midland Area Youth Action Council Educator Mini-Grant

The Midland Area Youth Action Council offers mini-grants of up to $500 for classroom projects that motivate and challenge students who attend school in Midland County. Priority is given to plans that provide materials that can be used for multiple years or in multiple classrooms over experiential plans such as field trips or single-use materials.

The Midland Area Youth Action Council recognizes that students come from diverse backgrounds, have different learning styles, and can benefit from creative learning opportunities. The Youth Action Council would like to provide educators with a funding opportunity to develop and implement instructional projects to motivate and challenge students to learn. Proposals should be unique classroom projects that enliven and enrich the curriculum. Projects are encouraged to be interdisciplinary, active-learning lessons and reinforce learning through simulation or applied to real-life situations.

The Beverly E. Hendricks Nursing Scholarship, established by the Hendricks family, honors Beverly's dedication to nursing and community. It supports students pursuing a Nursing degree at Delta College with a minimum 3.0 GPA, offering financial aid based on need. The scholarship reflects the importance of skilled healthcare professionals in today's society, aiming to enhance the quality of care within the community. This initiative empowers aspiring nurses to achieve their educational goals and contribute to the healthcare field.

The Community Gives Youth Service Program, supported by the Midland Area Community Foundation and Dow Company, empowers K-12 teams in Midland County to earn funding through volunteer activities. This initiative encourages youth involvement, ensuring that groups are formed predominantly by local residents and affiliated with recognized organizations. With a focus on community impact, the program aims to foster a culture of giving and support essential projects that enhance the quality of life for all in the region.

The Midland Area Youth Action Council Invested Adult Mini-Grant offers funding of up to $500 for dedicated adult groups supporting youth in Midland County. Suitable applicants include advisors to student clubs and leaders from organizations like Booster Clubs and Parent-Teacher Organizations. Grants foster collaboration and community engagement, reinforcing the council's mission to enhance educational opportunities and philanthropic leadership in the region.

The Big Give is a community initiative in Midland that brings together men dedicated to supporting local nonprofits. Members contribute $100 at each of three annual meetings, voting on which nonprofit will receive the funds. Since its inception, over $240,000 has been allocated to various Midland County nonprofits. The Midland Area Youth Action Council offers mini-grants of up to $500 to young people who want to make real change in their communities.

The Midland Area Youth Action Council recognizes that youth learn philanthropy by being philanthropists and we want to support Midland County youth in learning how to be generous, to practice good stewardship, and to serve their communities. We would like to provide youth with opportunities to make real change in the Midland area and to enable youth who might not otherwise be able to follow through on their passion in making a difference in the places they live. Proposals should be unique projects designed to benefit citizens of a specific governmental or educational entity or charitable organization (possessing 501(c)3 status).

Additionally, the Next Generation Scholarship, initiated in 2013, provides a $1,000 award to the runner-up, reinforcing Michigan Sugar Company’s commitment to nurturing future sugarbeet growers. This scholarship program emphasizes community involvement and encourages local youth to pursue agricultural opportunities.

The Central District Scholarship, funded by Michigan Sugar Company, awards up to two $1,000 scholarships annually to deserving high school seniors or college first-year students. Eligible applicants must reside in the Central District and have completed a Michigan Sugar Youth Sugarbeet Project. This initiative reflects Michigan Sugar's commitment to fostering education and community involvement, ensuring that local youth have the support they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.

The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation Grant supports organizations in Michigan that focus on political, charitable, scientific, or educational initiatives. Established in 1957, the foundation aims to assist eligible organizations, requiring applicants to provide proof of tax-exempt status and recent financial statements. This grant is a valuable opportunity for those looking to enhance community welfare and development through dedicated projects.

The Michigan Sugar Queen Scholarship, offered by Michigan Sugar Company, empowers young women aged 18-23 to represent the sugar industry as the Michigan Sugar Queen and Court Attendants. Each year, they receive scholarships of $4,000 and $2,000 respectively. Candidates must reside in sugarbeet-growing counties and demonstrate knowledge of the industry. Recipients commit to a year of service, attending various events, including parades and ceremonies, while applying funds strictly for tuition and books.

The Enbridge Community Grant aims to enhance the quality of life in North American communities through strategic donations and sponsorships. With funding ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, the grant supports organizations focused on safety, education, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous culture. Enbridge encourages early applications, with decisions typically made within eight weeks. The grant seeks to empower local initiatives that foster community strength, vibrancy, and sustainability.

Mary Giangrieco Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Beckley Area Foundation

Beckley Area Foundation was established in January 1985 by ten community-minded citizens. It began with a gift of $1.1 million from the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation as “seed” money for this Raleigh County project. BAF assets have grown to over $70 million with over 500 different funds managed by our three trustee banks. Today, Beckley Area Foundation is one of West Virginia’s largest community foundations.

Since its inception, BAF has distributed over $23 million to charities and other worthy projects in the fields of education, public recreation, health & human services, the arts, animal services and beautification.

Scholarships

The Beckley Area Foundation proudly manages scholarship funds established by individuals, businesses, and organizations dedicated to helping students pursue higher education. Many of these scholarships are tailored for specific schools, fields of study, or graduates from local high schools, while others offer broader opportunities. No matter the path, our scholarships aim to support students from our region as they work toward achieving their educational goals.

Most of these scholarships must be awarded to students from our geographic area or at least preference given to such students. While the majority of scholarships benefit Raleigh County applicants there are others designated for Fayette, Summers, Webster, and Wyoming students. 

Bill Weese Trades Scholarship

Residents of Webster County, WV; Recent graduates and adult career-switchers seeking a professional trade or retraining assistance; Must attend a trade school including vocational programs offering certification or degree programs designed to teach specific employment skills; Additional requirement details available in application.

Wyoming County Community Health Foundation Scholarship

Established by the Wyoming County Community Health Foundation to provide tuition assistance to a graduating high school senior who resides in Wyoming County and will major in the health care field.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Julia A. Frystak Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Julia Frystak, a Montrose student who passed away due to injuries sustained in an accident. Provides a post-secondary scholarship to a high school graduate who excels in academics and participates in athletics.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Van Cott Family Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Kermit Van Cott and his son Forrest to provide tuition assistance to a graduating Senior from one of the High Schools in Susquehanna County, with priority given to Blue Ridge, who will major in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, or Agriculture and who will matriculate at college or a post-secondary degree program.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Matthew VanFleet Memorial Automotive Scholarship

Established by Matthew’s parents and his sister in memory of Matt who passed away in an automobile accident. The scholarship provides assistance to a student who will study automotive technology. The scholarship is available to students from all the school districts in Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Mariano and Maria Lampazzi Fiaschi Memorial Scholarship

Established by Colonel Peter Fiaschi in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating student from Susquehanna Community School District who intends to pursue a major in healthcare. The scholarship provides financial support for up to four years of college, contingent upon the recipient maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 and remaining in good standing within an accredited healthcare program.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Wyoming-Sullivan Counties Bar Association Scholarship

Established by the Bar Association of Wyoming and Sullivan Counties to provide college assistance to a High School graduate from those two counties who will major in the legal profession.

The Wyoming/Sullivan County Bar Association created its annual scholarship in 2020 to provide assistance to a deserving high school graduating from those two counties who plans on majoring in the areas of pre-law, criminal justice or sociology. The intent is to encourage the graduate to pursue a career in these fields and to return to their home county upon attaining their graduate or post-graduate degree in order to provide these needed services to their local community.

Ross C. Todd Scholarship

Merit based award open to West Virginia blind students. Both graduating high school seniors and college upperclassmen, which at the time of application have achieved and maintained a 3.0 grade point average or better, are eligible to apply; All other considerations being equal, the two recipients having attained and maintained the highest grade point average within the applicant pool shall be named as recipients; West Virginia residents who are matriculating seniors or students already enrolled in a college/university.

The File Girls Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship

Weighted for educational merit, personal achievement and financial need; West Virginia high school matriculating senior with a confirmed diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Recipient will provide physician’s letter affirming a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis as part of the application process; The scholarship is to be awarded for post-secondary education through college, vocational or technical schools.

Susquehanna County Township Officials Association Scholarship

Established by The Susquehanna County Township Supervisors Association to provide a college scholarship to a graduating senior from Susquehanna County who will major in governmental affairs or political science.
