Grants of up to $25,000 for implementation or $5,000 for planning are available, targeting nonprofit organizations and local governments in select states. This initiative seeks to empower communities to achieve positive change through active engagement and support.

The Laura Jane Musser Fund was established by the estate of Laura Jane Musser of Little Falls, Minnesota to continue the personal philanthropy, which she practiced in her lifetime.

Environmental Initiative Program

The Laura Jane Musser Fund assists public or not-for-profit entities to initiate or implement projects that enhance the ecological integrity of publicly owned open spaces, while encouraging compatible human activities. The Fund’s goal is to promote public use of open space that improves a community’s quality of life and public health, while also ensuring the protection of healthy, viable and sustainable ecosystems by protecting or restoring habitat for a diversity of plant and animal species.

Projects must..

• Focus on protecting/restoring a sustainable ecosystem that is a defined, public open space.
• Promote public access to and use of the defined open space.
• Involve active participation of local community members, with a particular appreciation for volunteer and youth engagement and stakeholder contributions.
• Contain measurable outcomes within the first 12-18 months.
• Include a plan for the long term financial and environmental sustainability of the proposed program.

Projects during any one grant period will be eligible for either:

• implementation grants or 
• planning grants

Grants range from $8,000 for planning to $35,000 for implementation, targeting projects in specific states, fostering sustainability, and ensuring active local participation.

The Council of Graduate Students (COGS) offers a Career Development Grant to support graduate students' professional growth, providing up to $900 for eligible expenses such as travel and workshop fees. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, submit a personal statement, and provide a recommendation letter. The program is open to all non-professional graduate students at the University of Minnesota, with specific timelines for funding events in Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Summer 2025.

The Fostering Social Connection in Later Life Grants, funded by the Southwest Initiative Foundation, aim to combat social isolation and loneliness among older adults in southwest Minnesota. Organizations that demonstrate a commitment to diversity, innovation, and sustainable community impact are encouraged to apply. The foundation prioritizes grants that foster collaboration and improve the quality of life for residents.

The Chief John Raaflaub Memorial Firefighter Scholarship Fund, supported by the Boreal Waters Community Foundation, empowers students from Douglas County and the Twin Ports Area to pursue careers in firefighting. This initiative prioritizes high school graduates and nontraditional students enrolled in firefighting-related studies at Lake Superior College. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and show community involvement, with additional preference for women and BIPOC candidates.

The IWLA Minnesota Division Awards recognize outstanding conservation efforts and contributions by individuals and groups in Minnesota. Awards include the Distinguished Service Award for long-term service, the Dr. Walter Breckenridge Award for educators, and the Sigurd F. Olson Conservation Award for exceptional natural resource preservation. These awards celebrate the dedication of conservationists and promote community engagement in environmental stewardship, fostering a legacy of conservation within the state.

Humane Organization Grant Program 

Mission

To enhance the quality of life of shelter/ rescue animals and to increase their chances for adoption. 

The St. Croix Valley Foundation (SCVF) Humane Organization grant program funded by the Compassionate Animal Fund, is accepting applications (invitation only) from Managed Open Admission humane organizations located in the upper Midwest. The grants, ranging up to $3,000, can cover items on your “wish list” including food, supplies, infrastructure needs, and veterinary cost. 

Funding Criteria

Grants are intended to provide funds for items such as food, supplies, medicine, spay/neuter programs (for in-house animals to aid in adoption) newsletters, or other needs and/or programs that most benefit the humane organization.

​We understand that shelters may differ in the services or alternatives they offer during the waiting period prior to intake. If your facility is at capacity, you must provide a clear statement outlining how emergency surrenders and stray animals are handled, including the procedures your organization follows to operate as an Open Admission shelter.  

The Driving a Stronger Community Scholarship, funded by The Walser Foundation, supports high school seniors across Minnesota who showcase exemplary volunteerism and civic engagement. This scholarship awards $1,000 to one outstanding student from each participating high school, helping them pursue post-secondary education. Eligible applicants must complete over 30 hours of volunteer service and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher. This initiative aims to foster community involvement and empower future leaders.
