The J. D. Crowe Banjo Scholarship, established by the IBMA Foundation, honors the legacy of renowned bluegrass musician J. D. Crowe. Funded by a generous $20,000 donation from Arthur Hancock III, this scholarship aims to support aspiring banjo players pursuing their education at the collegiate level. Eligible candidates must showcase high performance skills on the banjo and demonstrate a commitment to the bluegrass music industry, ensuring Crowe's influence continues for future generations.

Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials.

IBMA  Foundation Project Grants

The IBMA Foundation awards project grants each year, usually in amounts between $1,000 and $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 2, 2024. Projects must align with the Foundation’s mission in one of the following areas

• Arts & culture
• Education
• Literary or academic programs
• History preservation

The IBMA Bluegrass College Scholarship offers a financial award ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 for students pursuing bluegrass music or related studies at the college level. With over $25,000 raised since June 2024, the scholarship aims to expand funding to $2,000 annually by 2025, promoting education and participation in bluegrass music.

The Splendido Residents Association Scholarships aim to support students in Southern Arizona by providing financial assistance for educational pursuits. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and have worked at least 12 hours weekly for six months. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $13,000 based on school type and enrollment status. Recipients can reapply for up to four years, ensuring ongoing support for their academic journeys.

The Rosa Louise Parks Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, aims to support students in financial need who demonstrate the potential for academic success. This unique scholarship, named after the civil rights icon, is dedicated to high school graduates from Southern Arizona, ensuring that they have the necessary resources to pursue higher education and become future leaders. It exemplifies the Foundation's commitment to fostering educational aspirations within the community.

The VCRC-VF Fellowship Program, a collaboration between the Vasculitis Clinical Research Consortium and the Vasculitis Foundation, offers a two-year mentored training opportunity for physician-investigators dedicated to vasculitis research. This tailored fellowship allows candidates to gain clinical and translational research experience at VCRC-affiliated sites in North America, focusing on patient-oriented investigation. Applicants must hold an MD, demonstrate a commitment to vasculitis care, and ideally possess relevant subspecialty training.

Pfizer Inc. and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) are launching the Quality Improvement Grant to enhance patient-centered outcomes in emergency department migraine management. This initiative seeks proposals for projects that improve the safe management of migraine patients, focusing on clinical program development. The Michael and Carolyn Stelman Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, supports students pursuing education in Culinary Arts, Music, or Photography. With annual awards of up to $1,250, this scholarship aims to empower high school graduates from Southern Arizona with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, enabling them to achieve their educational dreams and contribute as future leaders in the community.

The Jacques-Wegner Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, invests in future leaders by providing $3,000 annually to students attending a 4-year college. The Marge Christensen Gould Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,500 annually, honors the legacy of Marge Gould, a dedicated educator at Catalina High School. It aims to support students from Southern Arizona, especially those graduating from specific local high schools. Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and can re-apply for up to four years. This initiative emphasizes the importance of education in fostering future leaders within the community.

The Bridget McCabe Memorial Scholarship, funded by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, aims to support students at any life stage who demonstrate a passion for learning. With an annual award of up to $1,000, this non-renewable scholarship encourages applicants with a minimum 2.5 GPA who have graduated from a high school in Southern Arizona. The initiative reflects a commitment to nurturing future leaders and ensuring access to education for deserving students.

The CFSA General Scholarship aims to empower future leaders by providing essential financial support for education. Offered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, this renewable scholarship is available for up to four years, rewarding students with increasing amounts from $2,000 in their first year to $4,000 in subsequent years. Eligible applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be a graduate from a Southern Arizona high school, ensuring they have the opportunity to pursue their academic dreams.

The Michigan Health Endowment Fund offers Scholarships for Conferences and Professional Development to support health-related events. These scholarships, up to $2,500 per person and $5,000 per organization, are available for current or past grantees and partners. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a requirement to submit at least four weeks before the event. Eligible applicants must have at least five years of experience and agree to use the funds for professional training, enhancing their leadership skills and career growth.

The Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Fellowship supports PhD candidates in music scholarship during their final dissertation year. Awarded based on academic merit, it offers a $25,000 stipend for full-time study, with no tuition coverage. Applicants must be registered doctoral students in good standing at North American universities, having completed all requirements except the dissertation. The fellowship emphasizes timely completion, discouraging extensive employment during the term, and is non-renewable.

The AMS Explore Travel Grant supports current or recent undergraduate students to present 10-minute papers at the 2025 AMS-SMT Joint Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. The A.D. and Peggy Hewlett and Colonel David R. Inman Medical Scholarship, established by Steve Hewlett, Pam Inman, and Faye Houston, honors their parents' commitment to education and healthcare. This scholarship supports students pursuing nursing, pharmacy, or physical therapy, prioritizing applicants from Hancock, Ohio, or Daviess County, Kentucky. Applicants must demonstrate academic potential and compassion through relevant experiences. The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee administers this fund to foster a more inclusive and thriving community.

The Affiliate Grants - Early Music Program Fund supports educational initiatives for AMS-affiliated groups focusing on music and culture from before 1600. Established in 2020, it enhances research skills through various programming, including paleography and organology. Eligible applicants are limited to AMS chapters, study groups, and committees, with funding capped at $2000. The program aims to strengthen scholarly networks and requires grant reporting on fund usage and impact.

The American Musicological Society offers Affiliate Grants to support study group activities with up to $500 in funding, covering no more than 50% of total costs. Applications are accepted twice a year, with deadlines on August 1 and January 15. Only elected representatives of AMS study groups can apply, and groups may receive funding only once in a twelve-month period. Funds must be utilized within a year of the award date.
