Charitable Contributions

Costco Wholesale’s primary charitable efforts specifically focus on programs supporting children, education, and health and human services in the communities where we do business. Throughout the year we receive a large number of requests from nonprofit organizations striving to make a positive impact, and we are thankful to be able to provide support to a variety of organizations and causes. While we would like to respond favorably to all requests, understandably, the needs are far greater than our allocated resources and we are unable to accommodate them all.

Warehouse donations are handled at the warehouse level - please consult your local warehouse for up-to-date information regarding their donations contacts and review process.

Grant Applications

If the request is under consideration, you may be contacted by staff for any additional information needed. Applications are reviewed within 4-6 weeks, and decisions are made based on several factors, including: type of program; identified community need not otherwise available; indication that evidenced based data will establish measurable results of intended outcomes; community collaboration; broad base of financial support; project budget and operating expenses.

Global Impact Cash Grants

Cisco welcomes applications for Global Impact Cash Grants from community partners around the world who share our vision and offer an innovative approach to a critical social challenge.

We identify, incubate, and develop innovative solutions with the most impact. Global Impact Cash Grants go to nonprofits and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that address a significant social problem. We’re looking for programs that fit within our investment areas, serve the underserved, and leverage technology to improve the reach and efficiency of services. We accept applications year-round from eligible organizations. An initial information form is used to determine whether your organization will be invited to complete a full application.

Social Investment Areas

At Cisco, we make social investments in three areas where we believe our technology and our people can make the biggest impact—education, economic empowerment, and crisis response, the last of which incorporates shelter, water, food, and disaster relief. Together, these investment areas help people overcome barriers of poverty and inequality, and make a lasting difference by fostering strong global communities.

Education Investments

Our strategy is to inclusively invest in technology-based solutions that increase equitable access to education while improving student performance, engagement, and career exploration. We support K-12 solutions that emphasize science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) as well as literacy. We also consider programs that teach environmental sustainability, eliminate barriers to accessing climate change education, and invite student engagement globally to positively affect the environment.

What we look for:

• Innovative early grade solutions using the internet and technology to bridge the barriers preventing access to education for underserved students globally.
• Solutions that positively affect student attendance, attitudes, and behavior while inspiring action by students to improve learning outcomes, whether they participate in person, online, or in blended learning environments. 
• Solutions with high potential to replicate and scale globally, thereby increasing the availability of evidence-based solutions that support student-centricity, teacher capacity in the classroom, and increased parental participation to help students learn and develop.

Economic Empowerment

Our strategy is to invest in early stage, tech-enabled solutions that provide equitable access to the knowledge, skills, and resources that people need to support themselves and their families toward resilience, independence, and economic security.

Our goal is to support solutions that benefit individuals and families, and that contribute to local community growth and economic development in a sustainable economy.

We target our support in three interconnected areas:

• Skills development to help job seekers secure dignified employment and long-term career pathways in technology or other sectors, including environmental sustainability/green jobs.
• Inclusive entrepreneurship with small businesses as engines of local growth as well as high growth potential start-ups as large-scale job creators nationally and internationally, in technology or other sectors, including environment sustainability/green businesses.
• Banking the unbanked through relevant and affordable financial products and capacity building services.

Cisco Crisis Response

We seek to help overcome the cycle of poverty and dependence and achieve a more sustainable future through strategic investments. We back organizations that successfully address critical needs of underserved communities, because those who have their basic needs met are better equipped to learn and thrive.

What we look for:

• Innovative solutions that increase the capacity of grantees to deliver their products and services more effectively and efficiently
• Design and implementation of web-based tools that increase the availability of, or improve access to, products and services that are necessary for people to survive and thrive
• Programs that increase access to clean water, food, shelter, or disaster relief and promote a more sustainable future for all
  • By policy, relief campaigns respond to significant natural disaster and humanitarian crises as opposed to those caused by human conflict. Also by policy, our investments in this area do not include healthcare solutions.

Climate Impact

Our strategy is to invest US$100 million in Cisco Foundation funds over the next decade to help reverse the impact of climate change, working toward a sustainable and regenerative future for all.

The commitment includes both grant and impact investment funding for early-stage climate innovation. Both categories of support will be focused on bold climate solutions, and the grants side will also concentrate on community education and activation. Grants will go to exceptionally aligned nonprofit organizations, while impact investments will go to highly promising for-profit solutions through the private sector and climate impact funds.

Funding comes from the Cisco Foundation and will focus on:

• Identifying bold and innovative solutions that:
  • Draw down the carbon already in the atmosphere
  • Regenerate depleted ecosystems and broadly support the transition to a regenerative future
• Developing curricular initiatives to spur community engagement that can lead to measurable behavioral change and collective action

We will prioritize organizations that can achieve, measure, and report outcomes such as:

• Reduction, capture, and/or sequestering of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions
• Increased energy efficiency and improved mapping and management of natural resources, such as ecosystem restoration, forest treatments, reforestation, and afforestation that also will help repair our water cycles
• Transition to inclusive, just, coliberatory, and regenerative operating models, ways of being, and ways of organizing economies
• Creation of, and increase in, access to green jobs and job training
• Changes in community and individual behavior that lead to carbon footprint reduction, community climate resilience, and localized roadmaps to a sustainable shared climate future for all

Mission

The mission of the Hearst Foundations is to identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States can build healthy, productive and satisfying lives. Through its grantmaking, the Hearst Foundations support well-established nonprofit organizations that address significant issues within their major areas of focus—culture, education, health and social service—and that primarily serve large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. In each area of funding, the Foundations seek to identify those organizations achieving truly differentiated results relative to other organizations making similar efforts for similar populations. The Foundations also look for evidence of sustainability beyond their support.

Whether providing a scholarship to a deserving student, supporting a rural health clinic or bringing artists into schools so children can see firsthand the beauty of the arts, the Foundations’ focus is consistent: to help those in need, those underserved and those underrepresented in society. Since the Foundations were formed in the 1940s, the scale and capabilities of the grant making have changed, but the mission has not.

Culture Grant

The Hearst Foundations fund cultural institutions that offer meaningful programs in the arts and sciences, prioritizing those that enable engagement by young people and create a lasting and measurable impact. The Foundations also fund select programs nurturing and developing artistic talent. Supported organizations include arts schools, ballets, museums, operas, performing arts centers, symphonies and theaters.

Funding Priorities in Culture

In the recent past, 25% of total funding has been allocated to Culture. Organizations with budgets over $10 million have received 60% of the funding in Culture.

The Hearst Foundations are only able to fund approximately 25% of all grant requests, of which about 80% is directed to prior grantees and about 20% is targeted toward new grantees.

Liberty Mutual Foundation

At Liberty Mutual Insurance, we believe progress happens when people feel secure. We support organizations that work to empower individuals who are struggling to thrive amid challenging situations. 

Types of Support:

Liberty Mutual Foundation primarily provides programmatic and general operating support to 501(C)(3) organizations. Priority is given to organizations and projects that serve low-income youth and young adults. Each year, the Foundation awards a limited number of capital grants to current partner organizations whose missions closely align with our strategic grantmaking framework. 

The Medina Foundation is a private family foundation working to improve lives by funding human service organizations that provide direct support to Puget Sound residents.

We support organizations across our 14 county funding region that are addressing a wide range of human services.

Since our founding in 1947, we have granted over $115 million in grant dollars resulting in countless services and programs that help make lives better.

The Medina Foundation funds in the following focus areas:

Positive Pathways for Youth:Helping youth achieve positive outcomes.

We support organizations that:

• Ensure that young people’s basic needs such as safe, stable housing are met
• Mentor, tutor, and support youth as they find their own voice, achieve their own goals, and build new skills
• Support transition points through school, from early education through postsecondary, including job training

Stabilization for Families and Individuals: Ensuring basic needs are met. 

We support organizations that:

• Alleviate hunger, primarily through larger food distribution networks or rural food banks that are also a hub of additional services
• Prevent homelessness or quickly stabilize people who are experiencing homelessness
• Offer programs that prevent or reduce the effects of domestic violence, sexual assault, trauma, and abuse

Economic Opportunities: Helping people secure employment, increase income, and build assets.

We support organizations that:

• Offer job training and entrepreneurship opportunities
• Teach skills and assist with obtaining credentials needed for career advancement
• Provide financial education

What Makes a Strong Proposal

The Medina Foundation considers many qualities of an organization when reviewing proposals.

We look for organizations that are addressing critical community needs, engaging in strategic planning to meet well-mapped programmatic and financial goals, and seeing positive results through their programs. We believe organizations that are driven by strong leadership, through a diverse and engaged board and a dedicated executive director and staff, have a high likelihood of success.

Grant amounts awarded reflect both the needs of the nonprofit and the Foundation's desire to see the presence of other support. Generally, this means no more than 10% of an operating or capital budget. We do consider making exceptions for innovative start-ups. Since grant sizes vary widely, please review the grants list to see the size and types of grants that we have recently awarded. The Foundation’s median grant size is around $20,000 - $25,000.

The Norcliffe Foundation is a private family foundation established to improve the ​quality of life for all people in our community.

The Norcliffe Foundation provides support to a wide variety of organizations and projects. Grant size depends on the scope of the project and the capacity of the organization.

Nearly 60% of the grants we make are $15,000 or less.

• What is the gift range already committed or pending from other funders and foundations? The Norcliffe Foundation is most interested in joining a community of funders and is rarely the largest donor to a project.

Woodworth Family Foundation Grant

The Woodworth Family Foundation supports nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in Tacoma and Pierce County whose projects emphasize education, youth services, health care and human services.

• Education: Programs and initiatives that build the mind, character or physical ability of students.
  • Our focus: scholarships, capital projects, colleges, universities, private primary schools, private secondary schools
• Youth Services: Programs that engage young people in intensive, organized activities that contribute to their growth and benefit the local community.

Funding

Our grants typically range from $2,500 to $25,000.

We generally do not provide grants to an organization in back-to-back years. We prefer to see a 24-month interim between grants.

Our Mission

Our mission is to continue and further the philanthropic legacy of Gardner Cowles, Jr. and the Cowles family, which includes promotion of education, social justice, health, and the arts.

The Founder

The Cowles Charitable Trust was first established in 1948 by Gardner “Mike” Cowles, Jr. (1903-1985). Born into the Cowles publishing family of Des Moines, Iowa, Mike was the youngest of Gardner Cowles and Florence Call Cowles’ six children. A newspaper editor and publisher by trade, he was committed to his family’s traditions of responsible, public-spirited, and innovative journalism as well as philanthropy. 

The Cowles Charitable Trust supports the arts, education, the advancement of ethical journalism, medical and climate research.

Gupta Family Foundation is a private, nonprofit foundation headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, USA. Our mission is to support organizations that provide focused intervention in the lives of people who have been disadvantaged in some way to help them become self-reliant. We take a very broad view of “disadvantage” to include anything that holds a person back from realizing their potential, such as poverty, physical or mental disability, social alienation, etc. The foundation also supports relief agencies that serve people affected by emergencies such as natural disasters.

The foundation evaluates and awards annual and multi-year grants ranging from $5,000 to over $250,000 (USD). Our focus is on funding smaller organizations all around the world that are led by individuals with a deep personal commitment to their missions. 

Our selection criteria include:

• Mission alignment
• The organization is run by the founder or, if not, by a successor who embodies the original inspiration, passion and commitment of the founder.
• At least 90% of grant monies reaches the intended beneficiaries.
• The organization is non-sectarian, i.e.,
  • It does not, directly or indirectly, support or condone the proselytization of any religion,
  • It is not supported by or affiliated to a religious organization.

NW Children’s Foundation works to end the intergenerational cycle of child abuse, neglect, and trauma. We are committed to advancing trust-based philanthropy, recognizing the equally valuable contributions of funders, grant-seeking nonprofits, and the communities they serve in advancing equity and racial justice.

Our funding is focused on prevention, early intervention, and treatment to heal children, strengthen families, and empower youth. We invite child welfare organizations aligned with our mission to apply for funding.

Strategically maximizing every gift

Through our Grantmaking, we support prevention, early intervention, and treatment programs to heal children who have suffered trauma, strengthen families, and empower youth. Our grant portfolio includes a broad array of organizations – new and established, large and small, rural and urban.

To ensure our donors’ gifts can make the biggest difference, NW Children’s Foundation takes a strategic, hands-on approach in evaluating each grant candidate. 

Twice a year, our Board assesses grant requests from a wide variety of child welfare agencies. We look for a number of qualities in the agencies we select, including:

Once a first-level assessment has been completed, we conduct a comprehensive review, visiting each agency under consideration, seeing programs in action, and talking face-to-face with the individuals behind them.

Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation Grant

The Foundation will consider requests to support museums, cultural and performing arts programs; schools and hospitals; educational, skills-training and other programs for youth, seniors, and persons with disabilities; environmental and wildlife protection activities; and other community-based organizations and programs.

Centene Charitable Foundation

Successful corporate citizenship happens when companies invest in the local organizations that know their communities best. The Centene Foundation works with our local partners on initiatives that focus on inclusion, the whole person and community development.

Vision

Centene’s purpose is transforming the health of the community, one person at a time. The Centene Foundation is an essential part of how we pursue this purpose. We achieve measurable impact for the communities we serve through partnerships and philanthropy efforts that invest in initiatives with holistic approaches to dismantling barriers to health.

Areas of Focus

Reflecting Centene’s commitment to the needs of those who rely on government-sponsored health care and to addressing social determinants of health and health equity, preference will be given to initiatives in three distinct areas of focus.

The purpose of the Bamford Foundation is to improve the quality of life of individuals and to strengthen their communities, primarily in Tacoma, Washington and the South Puget Sound area of the Pacific Northwest.

History

The Bamford Foundation was established in 1990 by Calvin D. Bamford, Jr. and Joanne Bamford with the intent of supporting their home community of Tacoma, Washington. As long-time President of Globe Machine Manufacturing Company, founded in 1917 and located on Tacoma’s tide-flats, Calvin has demonstrated his commitment to give back to the Tacoma community through this foundation and through his membership on boards and in a variety of community organizations. Likewise, Joanne, having moved to the area in 1967 when she married Cal, has led a number of boards and has worked with many charitable organizations in the areas of education, human services and the arts, in order to improve the quality of life of families in Tacoma. The Bamford Foundation embodies the values that Joanne and Calvin instilled in their children and hope to instill in future generations. These values include the importance of family, life-long education, involvement in one's community, and generosity.

What We Support

Over the past 12 years, the Bamford Foundation has continued to make grants aligned with our four priority giving areas, primarily within greater Tacoma and Pierce County, in the spirit of our founders' mission to improve the quality of life of individuals and families and to strengthen their communities. The foundation supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, which include operational funds, capacity building funds, program funds, partnerships, and capital projects that are evidence-based; innovative; that promote equity, diversity, access and inclusion; and that invite individuals and families to use their voices and resources to strengthen their communities. We support efforts that represent collaboration with partners in the greater community for the most impact. The foundation's giving priorities reflect the board's value of the transformative role of lifelong education for individuals, families and communities:

Basic Needs (access to food, physical and mental/behavioral health care, housing and shelter, clothing and other basic needs, financial stability)

Early Learning and Parent support

We promote the healthy development and learning of young children 0-8 though our support of organizations, programs and initiatives/partnerships which improve access to and quality of early learning experiences including child care, support parents and primary caregivers as their children's first teachers, and enhance professional development and support of those who work with and care for young children.

Expanded Learning Opportunities

We support access to expanded learning opportunities for all of our community members, but in particular for children and youth preschool- grade 12, which includes participation in education-related programs in arts, cultural understanding and civic engagement; in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); social-emotional learning; environmental education; and learning support programs (supporting different pathways to learning).

Access to Higher Education and Job training opportunities

We support programs, initiatives, and organizations that improve access for people to opportunities in postsecondary education, job training, apprenticeships and career pathways, including programs that support students to complete their degrees, and to identify and reach their educational, career and life goals.

  • The Foundation supports efforts that promote the safety, security and physical and emotional health of children and youth. Attention is given to efforts which decrease social isolation and promote a sense of hope among those dealing with hardships or trauma.

  • The Foundation supports strategies that engage people as the fundamental stewards of the natural environment. We favor restoration and conservation efforts with a particular emphasis on organizations and projects that engage diverse stakeholders and promote volunteerism.

  • The Foundation envisions communities that are vibrant, diverse and benefit from active and engaged citizens. We support civic engagement that strengthens neighborhoods and communities by promoting community-based self determination, volunteerism and service.
• Culture and the Arts:
  • The Foundation believes in the power of culture and the arts to promote community and economic development. We support well-managed organizations and efforts that are responsive to the communities they serve and offer high-quality, relevant and accessible cultural and artistic experiences.
• Self-Sufficiency:
  • The Foundation recognizes that the path toward greater levels of self-sufficiency is influenced by many factors and supported by a range of assistance: from ensuring the availability of basic needs, such as food and shelter, to skill-building that leads to wage progression, personal savings and financial stabilization. Support is offered for efforts that improve and/or increase access to such assistance, and especially for efforts that empower families to recognize their own power to influence and improve their condition.

Arts Service Organization Support Grant

This grant offers operating support to regional and statewide non-profit arts service organizations that provide programming to support, increase, diversify, and enhance the expertise of arts professionals in the field.

What is an Arts Service Organization?

An Arts Service Organization (ASO) provides training, workshops, convenings, conferences, networking, technical assistance, and other professional development services to established and emerging arts professionals.

• Regional arts service organizations -
  • Provide professional development services for arts professionals from a minimum of three counties in one ArtsWA defined region.
  • Are based in the region where services are provided.
  • Have a minimum of 10% of the total public programming budget committed to professional development services for arts professionals in the region.
  • Region definitions:
    • Northwest Region – Island, King, Kitsap, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, Whatcom
    • Southwest Region – Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, Skamania, Thurston, Wahkiakum
    • Central Region – Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, Okanogan, Yakima
    • Eastern Region – Adams, Asotin, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Garfield, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, Walla Walla, Whitman
• Statewide arts service organizations -
  • Primarily provide professional development opportunities, support, services, and resources to arts professionals.
  • Provide services in ten or more counties and/or an annual convening of arts professionals from across the state. Annual convening should include structured professional development components.
  • Do not perform, produce, preserve, present, or teach art.
  • Statewide ASOs are encouraged to collaborate with regional arts organizations to help meet statewide distribution of services obligation.

Funding

Applicants can request up to $12,000 split across two years for general operating expenses. If awarded, grant amounts may vary depending on panel recommendations.

The categories above are not intended to limit the interest of the Foundation from considering other worthwhile projects. In general, the Foundation guidelines are broad to give us flexibility in providing grants.

The majority of our grants are made in the U.S. However, like Dr. Scholl, we recognize the need for a global outlook. Non-U.S. grants are given to organizations where directors have knowledge of the grantee.

Caring And Community

While their business success changed the Names’ family, it never changed the family’s humility and commitment to serving their community. Scott and Sis remembered their humble beginnings and the struggles of life during the Depression. For them, philanthropy was a part of being human and always the right thing to do.

In 1996, Scott and Sis started the Names Family Foundation in order to formalize their innate desire to impact their family and their community. Combining their passions for philanthropy and athletics, Scott and Sis put the focus of their foundation on supporting non-profit organizations that emphasized health, wellness and physical education. About Our Grant Program

The Names Family Foundation honors the passion of Scott and Evelyn “Sis” Names, who believed that every person deserves to live a healthy life with access to sports, athletics and play with plenty of opportunities to be physically fit. We support nonprofit organizations that are transforming lives through sports, physical activity and healthy lifestyle initiatives. We invest primarily in the Pierce County region, and in areas that have a direct link to the Names Family. Together we can impact lives in our community today, tomorrow and for generations to come.

Watersheds Small Grants Program

Pierce County is partnering with watershed councils, local nonprofits, and agencies to fund a small grants program supporting community projects that improve habitat and water quality across the County. The small grant programs are available in the three watersheds described below - Puyallup, Chambers-Clover, and KGI. Applications for individual grants up to $2,500 ($3,000 for the KGI Watershed) are open from March 3 - April 30, 2025.

Successful projects align with the current Action Agendas (or workplans) of the watershed councils and may include activities such as riparian plantings, invasive species removal, community clean-up events, nature-based education programs, and rain garden installations. 

There are no restrictions on who may apply. We encourage nonprofit organizations, schools, teachers, tribes, local governments, and individuals to apply. All applicants (individuals or organizations) are responsible for reporting grant income on their federal income taxes. Only complete applications will be accepted.

About the Small Grants Program

Pierce County partners with local organizations and agencies to provide grants to raise environmental literacy and improve habitat and water quality in Pierce County. 

Successful applications support one or more of the goals outlined in the current Action Agendas (or work plans) of the watershed councils. Examples of successful past projects include volunteer riparian plantings, invasive species removal, stream clean-up events, nature-based education preK-16 such as nature-themed school camps, community science, outreach to shoreline property owners, rain garden installations, rain barrel workshops, development of educational materials or purchase of equipment, signage or supplies for projects that benefit water quality or riparian habitat in public spaces such as parks, schools and libraries. 

Grant Overview

Grants are available for nonprofit organizations, schools, other groups, and individuals to work collaboratively in or with the Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed Council (CCWC) on drainage, water quality, and habitat issues within the WRIA12 watershed. Projects may include watershed education and outreach activities, enhancement and restoration activities, volunteer or student projects, and purchase of signage, equipment, or supplies.

Community Partnership Award

The Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award recognizes outstanding nonprofit organizations in the United States that have shown exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships with public, private or social sector leaders who are working together as equal partners, not as donors and recipients, to build a cohesive community that serves as a model for collaborating with others for the greater good.

Each year, the Mutual of America Foundation sponsors a national competition in which hundreds of organizations demonstrate the value of their partnership to the communities they serve, their ability to be replicated by others and their capacity to stimulate new approaches to addressing significant social issues.

Six organizations are selected by an independent committee to receive the Community Partnership Award.

• The Thomas J. Moran Award is given to the national award-winning program and includes $100,000 and a documentary video about the program.
• The Frances R. Hesselbein Award is given to a partnership that is addressing social challenges in more than one community, or which demonstrates the potential to be replicated in other communities. This recipient receives $75,000.
• Four other organizations are named Honorable Mention recipients for their programs, and each receives $50,000.

Since its inception in 1996, the Community Partnership Award has recognized 262 partnerships from cities and towns across America. Like so many of our clients working in the nonprofit community, Mutual of America is dedicated to having a direct, positive impact on society.
