About Foam Recycling
The process to recycle foam is like that of other recyclables. In the case of foam products, a special compactor – called a “densifier” – may be used in the processing of the material. Foam products are over 90% air, so densifying it allows the material to be transported more cost-effectively. To give you an example, a 48-foot truckload of baled foam polystyrene weighs only around 16,000 pounds, whereas a truckload of densified foam polystyrene weighs 40,000 pounds.
Innovative alternatives are being developed and deployed that are categorized as chemical recycling (vs. mechanical recycling). This will take the plastic resin back to its base state – in the case of foam PS, back to a styrene monomer. With chemical recycling, increased organic contamination will only impact the amount of foam for recovery (yield), but will not impact the recyclability of the plastic.
Foam Recycling Coalition Grant Program
Funding Source: Funding for the grant program comes from contributions from members of the Foam Recycling Coalition, a special interest group of the Foodservice Packaging Institute.
Grant Amounts: Funding amounts will be made on a case-by-case basis and will be dependent on equipment needs. The maximum amount per grant is $50,000.
Cash Match: No cash match is required, but additional costs by the grantee may be incurred for related items such as site preparation, provision of conveying system and electrical infrastructure, freight, and other installation costs.

Maryland Department of Transportation
The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is made up of five modal administrations: the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA); the Maryland Port Administration (MPA); the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA); the State Highway Administration (SHA); the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) – and authorities that are a part of MDOT, including the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). This unique approach provides the state’s leadership with the ability to develop a coordinated and balanced approach to transportation.
Urban Tree Program
The MDOT Urban Tree Program is a stewardship community tree planting program to help plant trees in communities that have lost trees as a result of transportation construction projects. The program was established by statute (Transportation - §2–103.8) out of the 2021 legislative session and was developed as a grant program in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Committee (MUCFC). The opportunity to apply for grant funding is open year-round! Applications will be reviewed twice a year for spring and fall planting seasons. The program awards grants for planting projects with additional funds available for pocket forest projects. The program supports the Maryland Five Million Trees initiative and supports MDOT's efforts to being the greenest department of transportation in the country.
Projects are prioritized if they support environmental justice initiatives, reduce the Urban Heat Island effect, and/or support the urban tree canopy.
Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC)
The Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC) was created by the Maryland General Assembly through the Community Health Care Access and Safety Net Act of 2005 to expand access to health care for low-income Marylanders and underserved communities in the state and support the delivery of affordable, high-quality health services by bolstering the capacity of the State’s health care safety net infrastructure. The CHRC is an independent commission, within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), whose 11 members are appointed by the Governor. Since its inception, the CHRC has awarded 985 grants totaling $396 million, supporting programs in every jurisdiction of the state. These programs have collectively served more than 912,000 Marylanders. CHRC grantees have used initial grant funds to leverage more than $59 million in additional federal, private, and local funding. Approximately 75% of Commission programs have been sustained at least one year or more after the initial grant funding has been expended.
The Maryland General Assembly created the CHRC because it recognized the need to have an independent commission focused solely on supporting projects that serve the unique health needs of vulnerable populations, strengthen the state’s network of community health resources, and address delivery gaps in Maryland’s dynamic health care marketplace. Health insurance coverage is not always sufficient for at-risk communities and vulnerable populations looking to receive affordable, high quality health care services. The fundamental policy objective of the CHRC’s authorizing statute is to expand capacity and resources to community health providers that can close these health gaps.
The CHRC’s annual Requests for Applications (RFA) have long reflected the Commission’s commitment to promote health equity, reduce health disparities, improve health outcomes, address Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), foster partnerships, and support state health priorities.

Let’s accelerate meaningful change!
Our mission is clear: to accelerate meaningful change through effective communication. We work through four core activities: capacity building, storytelling, services and grant support for NGOs.
We believe in storytelling that inspires action, builds trust and promotes constructive narratives.
CF strengthens organisations by building the skills and confidence needed to communicate effectively.
Why a Communication Foundation?
Many NGOs and UN organisations operate with limited budgets and few staff trained in professional communication. Added to this, shifting politics and growing conservatism create new challenges for their work. To remain resilient and amplify their impact, organisations must strengthen their identity and invest in communication.
When approached strategically, communication can shift from being a perceived obligation to a powerful opportunity. With the right focus, even limited budgets and capacity can be maximised to create and deliver clear, effective strategies unlocking advocacy, fundraising, and public trust, and ultimately driving meaningful, lasting change where it is most needed.
Storytelling Review – Master your mission’s story
Your story defines how people understand your organisation, its values and its impact. A Storytelling Review helps clarify and strengthen your narrative so it consistently reflects who you are, what you stand for and why your work matters.
CF’s Storytelling Review is a structured review of how your organisation communicates its story across channels and formats. We assess narrative structure, key messages, tone of voice, audience focus and coherence to understand whether your storytelling supports your mission and strategic positioning.
How it helps you
Dry data often fails to inspire action. This review helps you to find the "heart" of your work and communicate it in a way that sticks.
What We Do
Why it matters
NGOs operate in complex and competitive environments, where clarity and credibility are essential. Strong storytelling:
Over time, stories can get fragmented or can lose their meaning.
Different projects may tell different versions of your mission, diluting impact.
A Storytelling Review restores focus and alignment within your communication.
