The Lumpkin Family Foundation

The Lumpkin Family Foundation is a private, family foundation created in 1953 from the estate of Besse A. Lumpkin of Mattoon, Illinois.

We are a multi-generational organization whose programs reflect the collective aspirations of a diverse family living in communities across the country. We make grants and conduct programs that support people working together to build healthy, sustainable communities in East Central Illinois and beyond. After 70 years, members of the Lumpkin family continue to support the Foundation’s work, serving alongside members of the larger community on committees and the Board of Trustees.

Our Geographic Focus

Our grantmaking is deeply rooted in East Central Illinois, the original service area of Illinois Consolidated Telephone (ICTC), the company founded by the Lumpkin family in 1894. We also support organizations in Chicago and national organizations whose efforts align with our core focus on promoting health and wellness through sustainable food systems, mental health initiatives, and regenerative agriculture.

Land, Health, Community - Chicago Program

Grant Overview

The Land, Health, Community-Chicago (LHC-C) program has recently expanded its focus areas to reflect our commitment, as a Foundation, to supporting holistically healthy communities in the Chicagoland area. We believe that a community’s health is rooted in its ability to access and obtain life sustaining resources for all its residents without undue burden, systemic barriers, and inequitable opportunity. The Land, Health, Community-Chicago Program has one grant cycle in the fall.

Program Focus

We look to fund projects and organizations that support the following:

• Our communities are physically active, values healthy eating, and prioritizes overall wellbeing.
• All communities can thrive. Communities that have faced and continue to face inequitable and unjust policies, laws and practices will be equipped with the resources needed to realize their full potential.

Funding Priorities

• Opportunities for children in/out of school to engage physically with and to learn about the natural world, to eat well, and to care for the planet.
•  A community and/or multigenerational approach to addressing the mental health and wellness of youth.
• Efforts to increase access to healthy and sustainably produced food.
• Grassroots and community led initiatives centered on the pursuit of food justice.

The Land, Health, Community Grant Program: Chicagoland, administered by The Lumpkin Family Foundation, focuses on fostering healthy communities through funding for innovative, collaborative projects. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for organizations that aim to address systemic inequalities and promote health and wellness. This program seeks initiatives that enhance access to nutritious food, support mental health, and engage communities in sustainable practices, ultimately striving to create vibrant, equitable neighborhoods in the Chicagoland area.

The Preserve Route 66 Legacy Business Grant Fund offers financial support to enhance historic sites and stimulate economic growth along the iconic Route 66. Targeting projects that reflect the diverse narratives of historically underrepresented communities, this grant emphasizes mural and painting initiatives in preparation for the 2026 centennial celebration. Grants range from $5,000 to $10,000, with no matching funds required, fostering inclusivity and preservation of cultural heritage along the corridor.

The Social Services Grant Program, offered by the City of Naperville, aims to enhance community welfare through financial support for social services. Eligible non-profit organizations can apply for funding to address local needs in areas such as emergency assistance, mental health, and youth services. Emphasizing transportation and mental health initiatives, the program encourages organizations to demonstrate community impact and ongoing fundraising efforts. This program operates annually, with assessments conducted to align funding priorities with emerging community needs.

The Illinois Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program aims to enhance educational opportunities for students in high-poverty areas. It focuses on academic enrichment and offers various services including tutoring, youth development, and family engagement. Funded by the Illinois State Board of Education, the program supports partnerships to ensure equitable access to educational resources, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $600,000 to eligible entities serving low-income students and their families.

The Non-Profit Security Program offers vital funding to nonprofit organizations at high risk of terrorist attacks, enhancing their physical and cybersecurity measures. In FY 2024, two funding sources are available: NSGP-NSS-UA for nonprofits in designated urban areas like Cook County, and NSGP-NSS-S for those outside these areas. This initiative aims to bolster the security preparedness of nonprofits while aligning with broader state and local efforts.

The Blue Impact Grant by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois supports community-based non-profit organizations focused on improving health equity in Illinois. This grant program emphasizes addressing social determinants of health, including economic opportunity, food access, and health outcomes. Eligible organizations must align with BCBSIL's mission and serve Illinois residents. Applications are welcomed from tax-exempt entities under section 501(c)(3), with a commitment to fostering sustainable community solutions.

Enterprise Community Partners

Enterprise Community Partners (Enterprise) is a national nonprofit that exists to make a good home possible for the millions of families without one. We support community development organizations on the ground, aggregate and invest capital for impact, advance housing policy at every level of government, and build and manage communities ourselves. Since 1982, we have invested $80.9 billion and created 1 million homes across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands – all to make home and community places of pride, power and belonging.

Midwest Asset Management University Program

Operating, maintaining, and preserving affordable housing is complex and requires a specialized set of skills and a deep organizational commitment to asset management. Today, affordable housing providers face a variety of economic, operational, and compliance challenges, including rising operating costs, rental arrears, staffing shortages, and an aging portfolio.

Enterprise is launching its first Asset Management University (AMU) Program in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, and/or Minnesota) in March 2026 to support mission-aligned, affordable housing providers in meeting these challenges in their efforts to provide housing stability to residents and preserve the long-term affordability of properties.

The Midwest AMU is a comprehensive, five-month training program that seeks to strengthen the asset and property management capabilities of participating housing providers, improving organizations’ capacity to oversee the financial, physical, and operational health of their housing portfolios.

Midwest Asset Management University Cohort 

Enterprise is excited to offer this application for participation in the Asset Management University (AMU) Cohort (the “Cohort”). Up to fifteen (15) eligible organizations will be selected for this Cohort and will receive access to online training offered by the Consortium of Housing and Asset Management (CHAM), peer learning opportunities, and post-training technical assistance.

The Kosciuszko Foundation offers Tuition Scholarships for American students of Polish descent pursuing graduate studies in the U.S. Scholarships can provide up to $12,000 for full-time studies, including master's and Ph.D. programs. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents with Polish heritage and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This program aims to foster educational exchanges and cultural understanding between the U.S. and Poland, supporting various fields of study.

The Adtalem Global Education Foundation, established in 2010, is dedicated to enhancing education and community development. Based in Chicago, it focuses on expanding educational access, particularly for underrepresented minorities in the healthcare sector. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that promote economic growth through skills-based workforce development, address healthcare disparities, and increase access to quality education for underserved populations. Its commitment to civic engagement and equality reflects its mission to empower communities.

Community Health Center Construction Grants - Rebuild Illinois

Pursuant to 30 ILCS 766, the Community Health Center Construction Act ("Act"), the Capital Development Board ("CDB") (in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Public Health) is authorized to make grants available to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and FQHC Look-Alikes which serve, in whole or in part, a designated Medically Underserved Area (“MUA”) or Medically Underserved Population (“MUP”) both as defined in the Act, for health center construction projects.

The Land, Health, Community Grant Program, formerly known as Aspiramos Juntos, focuses on fostering holistically healthy communities in the Chicago region. Funded by the Lumpkin Family Foundation, this grant supports projects that promote physical activity, access to healthy food, and mental wellness for youth. Priority is given to grassroots organizations with budgets under $500,000 that are deeply connected to their communities. Special funding opportunities include grants for community gardens and inspiring collaborative projects up to $10,000.
