The  Rural Development Fund is a competitive grant program created to provide financial support for a variety of activities related to the unique economic and community development needs in rural communities and small towns throughout the Commonwealth, which sometimes face difficulty competing against larger cities/towns for grant resources. The overall goal of the program is to support projects that will help communities increase their capacity to leverage local assets and partake more directly in the state’s growing economy. CSX prioritizes support for organizations operating within its service areas, promoting community betterment and development.

The Agnes M. Lindsay Trust Grants provide essential financial support to nonprofit organizations in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, focusing on Health and Welfare, Dental Health, Camperships, Education, and Homeless Shelters. With a history of over 81 years, the Trust aims to assist those in need, especially in underserved populations. While they are currently not accepting unsolicited requests from colleges and universities, they continue to support initiatives that enhance community welfare and educational opportunities.

The Toy Foundation Program offers a unique opportunity for nonprofit organizations to apply for toy donations to support children in need. The Massachusetts Bar Foundation (MBF) offers Special Projects Grants to support initiatives that enhance access to civil legal aid and improve the administration of justice. These grants are available for projects that may not meet the traditional eligibility criteria of the IOLTA Grants Program, but align with the MBF’s mission to ensure equal access to legal resources for all, especially vulnerable populations. The FY2026 Title III, Part A Immigrant Children and Youth grant, administered by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, provides vital funding to local school districts. The Hamilton Company Charitable Foundation

 The Hamilton Company Charitable Foundation was formed in 2011 by Harold Brown. Its goal is to provide support for local 501c3 organizations which serve the community. Annual funding ranges between $250,000 and over $1,000,000. The chairman is Ronald Brown. Other board members: Jameson Brown, Maura Nolan Brown, Harley Brown, Fred Lebow & Andrea Kozinetz.

Grants

The Hamilton Company Charitable Foundation funds a wide variety of charities, including those that engage in medical and scientific research and deliver medical services and those that provide educational, artistic/musical, and recreational activities for underserved youths. The Foundation also finances scholarships for qualified applicants, aid to those experiencing homelessness, capital renovations or new construction, and animal hospitals and shelters.

Past and current charities supported include but are not limited to the West End House, Franciscan Children’s Hospital, the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation, and the Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology.

Efficient use of administrative costs relative to benefits received by individuals is considered, and we fund specific projects, not operational costs. 

As of January 1, 2026, the Hamilton Company Charitable Foundation’s annual funding is in excess of $4 million per year. There is one application for requests over $1000. A very brief summary application is required for requests up to $1,000.

These grants may provide educational, recreational, and other services to urban and suburban youth. Funds are also available for arts and culture by way of museums, other learning opportunities. Funds may be directed as assistance to people in need such as supplying care for families, food.

The National Sea Grant College Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1966 and works to create and maintain a healthy coastal environment and economy. The Sea Grant network consists of a federal/university partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and 34 programs in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium is a regional collaboration that includes 8 Sea Grant programs in 7 Northeast states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

American Lobster Initiative (ALI) Collaborative Research

The Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative is pleased to announce funding to support new collaborative research projects that closely align with emerging lobster industry and management needs. This request for proposals (RFP) adds to the substantial breadth of previous ALI-funded research by prioritizing projects that create “actionable science” (outputs and findings of the scientific process are useful to and usable by end-user communities) through the co-creation of information and/or products. 

To reach this goal, the ALI seeks to support collaborative research practices, the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and resources/capacities amongst the many people who comprise the American lobster industry. Projects must be developed and led by collaborative research teams that include at least one fishing industry representative, such as a commercial fisherman or a representative from a commercial fishing business, including cooperatives, dealers and processors. This call emphasizes research conducted with and for the industry, offering an exciting opportunity to support and elevate industry-research-management partnerships to address current ecological, regulatory, and socio-economic challenges faced by the American lobster fishery.

The Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative invites proposals for collaborative research projects to be funded from December 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028. Projects can be up to two years in duration, with a recommended duration of no less than 18 months. 

This opportunity is designed to support collaborative research conducted by those affiliated with the American lobster industry (including shoreside supply chain businesses), and any public or private higher education institution, municipal, state, federal, or tribal entity, research laboratory, or other community or non-profit institution. This opportunity is not open to single investigator proposals.

A total of $400,000 is available to support up to 8 two-year project awards. Project budgets cannot exceed $100,000 (including all direct and indirect costs), and must include non-federal cost share is required for this competition. See full RFP for guidance.

Small Business Technical Assistance Grant Program

The Small Business Technical Assistance (SBTA) Grant Program supports Massachusetts-based nonprofit organizations that provide technical assistance and business support services to small and microbusinesses. Eligible applicants include certified Community Development Corporations (CDCs), certified Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), and other nonprofit organizations with established community-focused small business assistance programs.

The program is designed to help nonprofits deliver services that strengthen businesses with:

• Fewer than 20 employees, and
• Annual revenues of no more than $2.5 million.

For FY27, grants of up to $150,000 are available to support programming that promotes business growth, stability, job creation, and local economic development. Program goals include:

• Expand the availability and quality of technical assistance for small and microbusinesses.
• Build organizational capacity among nonprofit providers serving small businesses.
• Increase equitable access to capital, guidance, and business resources.
• Strengthen local and regional small business ecosystems across Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Robotics Digital Twin Initiative aims to enhance access to robotics technology and foster the robotics entrepreneurial ecosystem across the Commonwealth. This funding opportunity, issued by the Innovation Institute's Robotics Department, will provide competitive capital grants for innovative robotic designs and applications. Projects will focus on building both physical robots and their digital twins, ensuring the resulting digital resources are publicly available for use by researchers and entrepreneurs, thus promoting collaboration and technological advancement.

Established in 2018, the fund focuses on restoring vital ecosystems like marshes and reefs to mitigate flooding impacts. With rising sea levels and increasing storm intensity, NCRF invests in community-led projects that foster resilience, ensuring both people and wildlife can adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Project Bread's School Breakfast Grant Program aims to ensure that all students in Massachusetts have access to nutritious meals through innovative breakfast solutions. By starting or expanding programs like Breakfast After the Bell, schools can significantly increase breakfast participation. The program provides essential support and resources to help schools assess their needs and implement effective strategies for enhancing breakfast accessibility, ultimately fostering a healthier school community.

The Project Bread Summer Eats Grant Program aims to combat hunger in Massachusetts by supporting Summer Eats sponsors with grants up to $7,500. The initiative focuses on expanding access to nutritious meals for children during the summer months when school is not in session. Through partnerships with local communities and organizations, Project Bread ensures that all children remain nourished and advocates for policies that enhance food accessibility.

The Patterson Foundation offers Assistance Dog Program Grants to support organizations providing service animals to veterans and individuals with disabilities. Funding is available for projects that expand capacity, personnel costs related to puppy training, and program support aimed at improving client experiences. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) non-profits and can request grants up to $35,000 for capital projects or $10,000 for program support. Applications are accepted through a two-step process.

The Workforce Training Fund Express Program provides Massachusetts businesses with up to $15,000 in grant funding for employee training. Aimed at companies with 100 or fewer W-2 employees, this program facilitates quick access to training resources to meet evolving workforce needs. Eligible businesses must pay into the Workforce Training Fund and comply with various documentation requirements. This initiative encourages employers to enhance their workforce capabilities while navigating financial constraints.

The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Grant supports 501(c)(3) public charities focused on preventing accidents and injuries on the water. Eligible organizations can apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 for projects related to public education, community services, and health sciences research. The foundation particularly values initiatives that enhance safety and survivability in maritime environments, making a significant impact on coastal communities.

The Norfolk Southern Corporate Giving: Thriving Communities Grant Program supports initiatives that promote sustainability, workforce development, and community resilience across a 22-state network. With grants ranging from $1,000 to $50,000, the program aims to foster economic development and ensure equal access to basic necessities. Eligible organizations include tax-exempt nonprofits, government entities, and public schools, emphasizing diversity and inclusion in their community-focused efforts.
