H5N1 Risk to Swine Research Program

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has partnered with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) and the Pork Checkoff to fund a $4 million research program to enhance prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response capabilities for H5N1 influenza in the U.S. swine herd.

As part of SHIC’s strategic mission to respond to emerging disease threats, SHIC monitors disease outbreaks nationally and internationally for their potential risks to the U.S. swine herd. H5N1 influenza is an emerging disease identified as a priority for U.S. pork industry prevention and preparedness due to the growing number of diverse mammalian species susceptible to infection and the unprecedented 2024 H5N1 outbreak impacting U.S. dairy herds.

The Captain Mark Tyler Voss Memorial Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, aims to support graduating seniors from Boerne High School and Boerne Samuel V. Champion High School. This scholarship honors Captain Mark Tyler Voss, a dedicated Air Force pilot and 2004 graduate who tragically lost his life in Afghanistan. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to extracurricular activities, and strong leadership qualities.

The Frederick Carl Hawkins Endowed Educational Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, supports Kerr County students pursuing higher education. Created in memory of Freddie Hawkins, a dedicated youth mentor, the scholarship requires applicants to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and provide two letters of reference. This initiative reflects the Foundation's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering community development in the Texas Hill Country.

The Hill Country Performing Arts Scholarship, funded by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, supports graduating students pursuing higher education in performing arts. The James Eastland Memorial Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, honors James's spirit and character by providing financial support to graduating seniors of Hunt ISD. Applicants must demonstrate their extracurricular involvement and submit an essay reflecting on their educational aspirations or personal growth in the Hunt area. This scholarship aims to inspire young leaders and support their pursuit of higher education, continuing James's legacy of mentorship and positivity.

The Joshua Tyree Williams Memorial Scholarship, established by Big Brothers Big Sisters, honors the legacy of Joshua Tyree Williams by providing educational funding to deserving students. Applicants must be graduating seniors from specific Central Texas high schools, possess a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate strong character and leadership. Preference is given to those connected to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program or residing at Arms of Hope-Medina Campus, fostering community impact in the Texas Hill Country.

The Karolyn Kolb Martinez “Excellence in Nursing” Memorial Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, honors the legacy of a dedicated nurse by supporting students pursuing nursing degrees. This scholarship is available to high school graduates and current nursing students in Central Texas counties. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to nursing excellence and maintain a minimum GPA, with reapplication allowed for up to three years.

The Sampson Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for a Year 3 or Year 4 veterinary school student or resident committed to Zoological or Wildlife Medicine.

The Indigenous Tomorrows Fund (ITF) is a youth-led initiative by Native Americans in Philanthropy aimed at supporting Indigenous youth leadership and community-driven solutions. In its 2025 pilot year, ITF will award up to 24 grants of $30,000 each to projects that enhance cultural continuity and sustainable futures. Priorities include promoting food justice, advancing community health, and strengthening cultural connections, particularly those addressing inequity and fostering long-term healing.

The SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), are designed to promote early-career independence by supporting research and training goals in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. Applicants can choose between two tracks: Fundamental Research and Broadening Participation. The Nordstrom Community Grant focuses on supporting youth and families by providing over $1 million in grants annually. It aims to assist grassroots organizations that address essential community needs such as food, shelter, and clothing, as well as creating opportunities for economic mobility through mentorship and workforce development. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits located in areas where Nordstrom operates. Applications are encouraged for those meeting these criteria.

The Sundance Institute's Native Lab Application aims to support emerging filmmakers and episodic creators from U.S.-based Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaskan Native, and Indigenous communities, as well as Indigenous Canadian artists. This initiative nurtures independent storytelling and creativity, providing vital resources and opportunities for underrepresented voices in film. Eligible applicants must submit a narrative feature or episodic pilot script. The program will accept three U.S.-based projects and one Canada-based project, with activities held virtually and in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Native Forward Student Access Funding supports American Indian and Alaska Native students by providing financial assistance for graduate and professional examination costs. With over 50 years of experience, Native Forward has empowered more than 22,000 students across the United States. This funding not only covers exam fees but also related preparatory expenses, ensuring that students can pursue their educational goals without financial barriers. The initiative aims to enhance representation and visibility of Native scholars in higher education.
