Community Impact Grants

Beyond the Honors Awards, our Community Impact Grants, in accordance with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), help Texas-based nonprofit organizations working to provide direct services to low- and moderate-income communities or individuals in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

At MPC, our community investment strategy is centered around strengthening communities and helping make people's lives better. We focus on contributions and partnerships with charitable organizations that reflect the priorities of our community stakeholders, align with our core values, amplify our sustainability strategy and enable us to make a positive, measurable impact.

Charitable Contributions and Grants

MPC and our employees provide support to 501(c)(3) non-profit and government-related organizations and agencies in the form of foundation grants, corporate contributions and sponsorships and workplace giving and volunteerism. While we will accept requests from eligible organizations across our marketing area, preference will be given to communities where the company has a significant operational and employee presence.

We strategically focus community investments on three core areas where it can make a positive, measurable impact: workforce development, sustainability and thriving communities.

Communities Investment Priorities

Workforce Development

From engineers to pipefitters, chemists to accountants, IT specialists to welders, MPC’s success relies on our ability to recruit and retain employees with exceptional skills-based experience. Our goal is to invest in workforce initiatives that better prepare individuals for professional success by increasing access to high-quality educational training and career readiness resources inclusive of vocational, technical and skilled trades.

Sustainability

Consistent with our commitment to meet the needs of today while investing in a sustainable future is our support of community programs involving environmental conservation and sustainability. MPC supports environmental government agencies, community groups, trade organizations and professional and industry associations devoted to protecting, conserving and sustaining natural resources. These efforts may include life sciences and breakthrough research, protecting biodiversity, preserving or creating parks and green spaces, improving air and water quality and increasing access to clean water and food.

Thriving Communities 

We are committed to making our communities stronger, safer and thriving places to live, work and play. MPC provides funding for programs that promote the resiliency of our shared communities including helping to address basic needs, supporting youth development programs and creating opportunities for economic vitality. This also includes safety projects and efforts that help communities better prepare for, mitigate the risks of and respond to disasters, hazards and emergenciess

Background

Our Community Investment Program contributes to nonprofit organizations that operate within the immediate H-E-B service area. Depending on the need we may contribute in-kind product, volunteers, or monetary funding towards activities, projects, and causes that make a visible and possible difference. Our Community Investment Program primarily supports organizations focused on arts and humanities, disaster relief, diversity and inclusion, education and literacy, environmental and sustainability, health and wellness, hunger relief, military and veteran support, and general social services.

Grant Opportunities

Our grant-making is centered on understanding our community needs, building meaningful relationships with our stakeholders, and being responsive to the feedback we receive about our grant processes. We invest in the nonprofit community using trust-based philanthropic principles to guide our grant efforts.

By partnering with the community, we aim to close the opportunity gap for the people in San Antonio who need it most. We offer general operating support to nonprofits of all sizes, to allow organizations to focus on meeting their mission and addressing the needs of individuals and communities they serve. In addition, providing multi-year support allows our nonprofit partners to achieve greater stability and greater ability to plan for future sustainability.

Our primary impact areas of Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, Youth Success and Animal Services guide the bulk of our grant-making efforts. However, we offer a range of grant opportunities for organizations meeting their communities’ needs.

Special and Urgent Needs

To provide rapid response funding for nonprofits facing unexpected challenges that threaten service delivery and/or unexpected opportunities to expand services.

Funding Overview

When other funding sources are not available, the Special and Urgent Needs grant provides rapid response support when an unexpected and unbudgeted need critical to operations would prevent an organization from fulfilling its mission.

One-time grants of up to $10,000 are provided to help organizations respond to an urgent need that could not have been anticipated or allows them to take advantage of an unforeseen opportunity.

Valero Energy Foundation 

Valero, its employees and the Valero Energy Foundation are committed to improving the quality of life in communities where we work and live, fulfilling a mission that was set from the beginning. We set the standard for corporate citizenship and promotes prosperity in our communities. 

The Valero Energy Foundation -- a public charity and Valero's philanthropic arm -- funds nonprofit agencies that serve predominantly disadvantaged children and families. In 2019, the Foundation contributed appoximately $40 million in assistance in the communities where Valero has major operations.

Four Pillars of Support

Our funding focuses on our four pillars of giving in communities where we have major operations.

• Basic Needs:  Valero gives assistance to agencies that provide basic needs of life, including shelter, food and clothing necessary for the development of a strong and safe community. 
• Health Care: We invest in the development of strategic community health resources and facilities that will support the needs of all members of our nearby communities, with major gifts going to children’s hospitals, university medical centers and service providers that offer specialized health care services and programs.
• Education: Valero is a strong advocate of education as it creates a necessary foundation for all children to thrive and for adults to lead productive lives. 
• Civic: We support civic and environmental initiatives directly related to the success of the communities where we live and work.

The Texas Capital Foundation Honors Awards 

Our signature Honors Awards is a competitive annual grant award program that recognizes three exceptional nonprofit organizations. These grants support small and mid-sized nonprofit organizations leading innovative, sustainable solutions that address critical needs in our communities. 

Two grants of $50,000 are awarded to nonprofit organizations with programs that are aligned with our Honors Award categories in Housing Solutions and Education and Workforce Development. One grant delivers $100,000 in funding to a nonprofit organization with a program dedicated to serving veterans and first responders. The Texas Capital Foundation prioritizes supporting nonprofits that deliver essential services within our markets.

Education and Workforce Development Honors Award

The Education and Workforce Development Honors Award will recognize one nonprofit organization that helps individuals transform entrepreneurial aspirations into successful, sustainable businesses. This grant will support programs that provide direct small business development services, including mentorship, training, coaching and other essential resources that equip entrepreneurs to launch, grow and thrive.

The Housing Solutions Honors Award will support one nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing long-term housing stability and generational wealth through homeownership. This grant will fund programs that offer homebuyer education, housing succession planning or estate planning — addressing systemic barriers and helping families build lasting financial security.

This grant will support direct service programs that address the unique needs of these communities by offering resources that enhance readiness, promote mental and physical well-being and improve overall quality of life.

Since 1964, the Area Foundation has distributed millions in grants and scholarships to educate youth, preserve the environment, protect animals, fund research and provide services that enhance the quality of life for people living in and around San Antonio.

San Antonio Area African American Community Fund Grant

Vulcan Materials Corporation provided a donation to support The San Antonio Area African American Community Fund (SAAAACF) grants program. SAAAACF is an outreach fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. SAAAACF may award up to $25,000 total in grants for all applications received and approved for funding. SAAAACF expects to award grants in the amounts that will serve its mission and have the community impact desired. A maximum of one application can be submitted for each nonprofit organization.

Focus Areas

Arts/Culture

The history and culture of a community can be remembered, preserved and shared with others through various forms of artistic expression that celebrate, inspire and enlighten. The Fund will consider programs and initiatives that present the uniqueness of African American arts, and promote and preserve the rich and diverse African American cultural traditions in an educational, informational, inclusive and entertaining manner.

HealthThe general health and well-being of the African American community is paramount to its perpetuity. The Fund will support programs that traverse the intervention continuum, including education and awareness, prevention and planning, and programs that provide access to holistic care, including both physical and mental health. The Fund is especially concerned with heart disease/stroke, diabetes, obesity, Sickle Cell Anemia, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, and other maladies and conditions that disproportionately affect the African American community.People In NeedThe social well-being and the development of human capital are of great significance to the perpetuation of the African American community. The Fund is committed to supporting programs that address critical issues and concerns that significantly affect the African American community, such as poverty, access to care/resources, abuse/neglect, teen pregnancy and family preservation. EducationAn educated community is a prerequisite for economic and social success. The Fund is committed to supporting programs that advance the value and importance of education, enlighten and engage African Americans in business, political and community sectors where they are typically underrepresented and foster and develop a diverse network of African American leaders in the San Antonio area. The Fund will also support programs that celebrate, nurture and develop African American youth.YouthThe fostering and development of our youth is critical to the African American Community. The Fund is committed to programs that provide opportunities for youth to expand their horizons and engage them with role models. 

About

The Preservation Leadership Forum of the National Trust for Historic Preservation is a network of preservation leaders — professionals, students, volunteers, activists, experts — who share the latest ideas, information, and advice, and have access to in-depth preservation resources and training.

Southwest Intervention Fund

Grants from the National Trust’s Southwest Intervention Fund are intended to further preservation efforts of the traditional cultures of the Southwest region, exclusively in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, West Texas (West Texas is defined as the area west of US Route 281 from the Oklahoma border to San Antonio proper and north of US Route 90 from San Antonio proper to Del Rio) and Utah. The Fund provides support for preservation planning efforts and enables prompt responses to emergency threats or opportunities in the eligible states. Local partners, nonprofit organizations and government agencies that have strategic opportunities to save sites or help jumpstart preservation projects are eligible for the fund’s small, catalytic grants. Grants generally range from $2,500 to $10,000.

The Fund can support assistance for a single prehistoric or historic place or actions affecting an entire state or part of a state, or several states, so long as all of the states are among the five designated states. Actions aimed at direct intervention to save historic and cultural sites and at capacity building are eligible.

The decision to pursue project funding through the Southwest Intervention Fund must be made in consultation with the National Trust grants office. Please contact us if you would like to discuss your project.  

Operational & Culturally Specific Grants

Operational & Culturally Specific Grants provide operational support to San Antonio-based arts and culture nonprofits that produce exemplary programming for locals and visitors. Grants are awarded on a three-year cycle (FY25, FY26, and FY27) with an annual renewal process. New for this cycle is an annual grant entry for newly eligible applicants. Funding is dependent upon eligibility and the availability of funds.

Operational & Culturally Specific Grants are funded by the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) to promote and engage residents and visitors in the cultural experiences and offerings of San Antonio. Occasionally other funding sources are made available to the Department of Arts & Culture and additional funding may be offered to support projects that otherwise cannot be funded through HOT.

Culturally Specific Grant Amounts

Grants up to 20% of an organization’s three-year average of net operating expenses (minus capital expenditures and/or depreciation), not to exceed $150,000. Allocations rely on verified IRS 990s in GuideStar. In-kind expenses must be reported on the 990 and included on Line 18, “Total Expenditures.” Awards are subject to funding availability.

The San Antonio Area Foundation supports nonprofit through grants, strengthens nonprofits through a variety of capacity-building services and sustains organizations with financial tools. 

Responsive Grants

The Responsive Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership, convening power, and capacity building efforts to advance equity in San Antonio. By providing general operating awards, we take an asset-based approach to allow organizations to focus on mission and address the needs of individuals and communities they serve.

In speaking with many of our nonprofit partners, we heard that the shift to multi-year grants and our deepening commitment to putting trust-based philanthropy into practice has provided an element of stability during a time when so much is in flux. For many, this translated into a greater ability to plan for the coming year and in turn, greater stability in the programs and services this provides for our communities. 

By partnering with the community, the Responsive Grants process aims to close the opportunity gap for the people in San Antonio who need it most. Our primary five impact areas include: Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, and Youth Success. 

We recognize that our shift to multi-year funding is challenging for organizations who are not recent grant recipients and would benefit from an opportunity to apply for funding through a competitive grant process. We continue to work with our staff, board, and non-profit partners to identify and invest in programs that support your work outside of the Responsive grants, including capacity-building for nonprofits, peer learning and strategic partnerships. 

Cycle One: Cultural Vibrancy and Youth Success

Cultural Vibrancy

Supports organizations and programming that ensure access to arts and cultural programming and encourage broad participation from all parts of our community; reflect the diverse cultures of the San Antonio area; and promote the value of arts and culture through arts education, advocacy, and the integration of arts and culture across sectors through innovative collaboration. 

Youth Success

Supports organizations and programs that encourage the achievement of all youth within the community throughout a student’s education (cradle to career; address disparities across youth educational outcomes; provide equitable access to scholarships, and engage communities by strengthening youth leadership and providing educational activities for parents and caretakers. 

PURPOSE

The Purpose of the MCCF is to foster patriotism and the integration of the military and civilian communities of the San Antonio, TX area, to provide scholarships for children of active or retired military personnel, to support organizations that assist military personnel and their families, to support the Military Ambassador Program, and to raise the positive profile of military service in Texas.

VISION

To be a primary resource through which donors support the San Antonio area Military Community.

MISSION

To enhance the military’s integration into the greater San Antonio Community; provide college scholarships for military children; support organizations that assist military members, veterans, and their families; and to recognize and celebrate military service through our Military Ambassador Program.

Military-Civilian Charitable Foundation Grant

The purpose of the MCCF is to foster patriotism and the integration of the military and civilian communities of the San Antonio, TX, area, to provide scholarships for children of active or retired military personnel, to support organizations that assist military personnel and their families, to support the Military Ambassador Program, and to raise the positive profile of military service in Texas.

MCCF donates to organizations who give services directly to military members, veterans, and/or the families as they fall within the purpose of the foundation.

Events Grants

The Department of Arts & Culture offers Events Grants to qualifying San Antonio-based nonprofits. These grants support the production of one artistic event. Available for three-year funding cycles, the grants aim to support events. These events should exemplify and increase access to the arts and culture of San Antonio.

Production Costs Grants

The Department of Arts & Culture offers grants for performing arts organizations and artists. The grant is available to San Antonio nonprofits. It's for those performing arts-producing organizations and professional performing artists. It provides support for the following:

• artist fees
• back-of-house labor fees
• marketing costs for productions already planned
• security costs
• venue and equipment rentals

The goal of this grant is to assist with the production of performing arts programming in San Antonio that are:

• accessible
• high-quality
• innovative

Since 2004, through the collective power of women, Impact San Antonio has awarded over $2.6 Million to nonprofit organizations in greater San Antonio and the surrounding area.

Focus Areas

These applications are screened by committees that review and evaluate the applications to select finalists in five focus areas:

• Arts & Culture
  • Programs and projects that cultivate, develop, educate and improve the cultural and artistic climate in the community.
• Education
  • Programs and projects that advance learning opportunities, increase educational access and improve education.
• Environment, Recreation & Preservation
  • Programs and projects that improve, restore, conserve, revitalize or enhance the natural environment, recreational facilities or preserve historic sites.
• Family
  • Programs and projects that strengthen and enhance the lives of children and families.
• Health & Wellness
  • Programs and projects that positively impact the mental or physical health and wellness of people.

Pew Biomedical Scholars 

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.

Based on their performance during their education and training, candidates should demonstrate outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. Strong proposals will incorporate particularly creative and pioneering approaches to basic, translational, and applied biomedical research. Candidates whose work is based on biomedical principles but who bring in concepts and theories from more diverse fields are encouraged to apply.

Ideas with the potential to produce an unusually high impact are encouraged. Selection of the successful candidates will be based on a detailed description of the work that the applicant proposes to undertake, evaluations of the candidate’s performance, and notable past accomplishments, including honors, awards, and publications. In evaluating the candidates, the National Advisory Committee gives considerable weight to both the project proposal and the researcher, including evidence that the candidate is a successful independent investigator and has the skill set needed to carry out their high-impact proposal.

Funding from the NIH, other government sources, and project grants from nonprofit associations do not pose a conflict with the Pew scholars program.

Funding

The current grant level is $300,000.

An award of $75,000 per year for four years will be provided to the sponsoring institution for use by the scholar, subject to annual review of the scholar’s progress. Grant agreements will be issued in August of the award year. The awarded funds may be used at the discretion of the Pew scholar, for personnel, equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to the scholar's research and as to best advance his or her research and career.

• The amount of the award that may be used for the principal investigator’s salary is limited to $12,500 per year (including benefits) or $50,000 over the duration of the grant. There are no limits on student or postdoctoral salaries.
• Not more than 8 percent ($24,000) of the total award value may be allocated for facilities and administration (F&A) charges or indirect costs (IDCs).
• Should the funds not be immediately required, they may be accumulated and carried over through the grant period and, with written approval of the program office, the grant may receive a no-cost extension for one additional year (without additional funds).
• Subawards are allowed.

During the four-year grant term, program participants are required to attend an annual meeting held in March or April. All eligible expenses for attendees’ travel, lodging, and meals are paid by Pew. The meeting provides Pew scholars with an opportunity to present their research and for scientific collaboration and exchange with other scholars and members of the National Advisory Committee.

Texan by Nature is proud to partner with H-E-B to catalyze a statewide tree-planting program. Trees for Texans enriches the places we call home by planting trees that create healthier environments for schools, communities, and our future.

Trees help communities thrive by offering shade, reducing the urban heat island effect, and cooling urban areas. Trees also enhance our communities, providing educational opportunities and mental health benefits that enrich the quality of life of our communities.

Trees play a crucial role in keeping our environment healthy. Trees help absorb carbon dioxide providing cleaner air. Trees help filter water, providing clean drinking water for communities. Trees and forests provide crucial habitats that help healthy populations of wildlife thrive.

H-E-B Trees for Texans is a long-term investment in the future of all Texans. As trees grow and mature over time, their benefits extend through generations creating a legacy of sustainability and stewardship for future generations to enjoy.

For Communities Grant

We’re connecting communities to nature with opportunities for hands-on conservation. H-E-B supports communities by partnering with local non-profits to plant trees, engage volunteers, and celebrate the places we call home.

We invite non-profits, municipalities, and civic organizations to apply for a $5,000 grant for projects that increase tree canopy, reduce the heat island effect, increase available greenspace, and beautify public spaces in Texas. This application is open annually, and there are no restrictions regarding number of applications. Organizations are eligible to apply each cycle.

Funding is awarded annually for plantings occurring during the upcoming tree planting season.

Cycle Two: Livable and Resilient Communities and Successful Aging

Livable and Resilient Communities

Supports organizations, programs and initiatives that further access to affordable, safe, and stable housing; transportation; wellness resources and public spaces; public-private partnerships to create sustainable opportunities and address disparities in these areas across the San Antonio area; and platforms for community/stakeholder voice and leadership.

Successful Aging

Supports organizations and programs that address the needs of older adults and their caregivers; recognize their ongoing contributions to diverse communities across the San Antonio area; provide opportunities for older adults to engage and connect; and build awareness of and collaboration between existing resources. 

Collaborative Grants

The Collaborative Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership and unique opportunities to advance equity in San Antonio. This process enables the Area Foundation to provide funding for collaborative programs outside of the triennial responsive grant process. Proposals may be submitted to the Area Foundation, reviewed by Area Foundation staff; and, if approved, the requestor will be invited to apply for funding.

Such needs may include:

• Collaborative program expenses (programs can carry the Santikos name).
• Unique opportunities to collaborate with other providers.
• Community needs and pressing issues to the community.
• Collaborative programs that address equity or systemic issues.

Grant requests may include:

• Program and operating expenses related to a collaborative opportunity.

What We Fund

Collaborative grants are one-time grants awarded to organizations whose services align with the vision of at least one of our four primary impact areas. Priority is given to organizations serving under-represented and under-served communities.

Cultural Vibrancy

Levitt Music Series Grants - BLOC

Levitt BLOC is a multi-year matching grant opportunity that activates underused public spaces across multiple neighborhoods within a town or city through the joy of free, live music.

Geared to communities of any size, Levitt BLOC (Building Layers Of Community) activates different neighborhoods in a town or city by “layering” concerts across multiple public spaces, broadening the overall reach of the music series. Levitt BLOC fosters social cohesion and amplifies community pride by featuring a diverse lineup ranging from acclaimed, emerging talent to seasoned, award-winning artists on the local, regional, and national circuits, ensuring access to high-caliber performances throughout a community. Levitt BLOC launched as a two-year pilot program this past year with the Chattanooga-based nonprofit, RISE.

In addition to financial support, the Levitt Foundation provides grant recipients with valuable resources including best practices, program frameworks, toolkits, and trainings to deepen impact in their communities.

Levitt Music Series Grants - VIBE

Levitt VIBE is a multi-year matching grant opportunity that brings the joy of free, live music to public spaces in city neighborhoods where access to arts experiences may be limited.

Geared to large cities with a population over 250,000, Levitt VIBE (Vibrant Inclusive Beats for Everyone) brings the free outdoor concerts to neighborhoods where there is limited access to arts programming and live music. Each Levitt VIBE concert series features a diverse lineup of acclaimed, emerging talent to seasoned, award-winning artists on the local, regional, and national circuits, ensuring access to high-caliber performances for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Levitt VIBE Music Series create a community destination, connecting people to each other and inspiring neighborhood pride of place. Levitt VIBE was launched as a two-year pilot program this past year with three city neighborhoods: the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago; the Near Southside neighborhood of Indianapolis; and the East Oakland neighborhood of Oakland, California.

The Kilpatrick Memorial Trust provides support for charitable organizations, with a preference for organizations serving the San Antonio metropolitan area that help vulnerable individuals address food, shelter, and social service needs. 

Capital & Naming Rights Grants

The Capital/Naming Rights Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership and unique opportunities to advance equity in San Antonio. This process enables the Area Foundation to provide funding for capital naming rights programs outside of the triennial responsive grant process. Proposals may be submitted to the Area Foundation, reviewed by Area Foundation staff; and, if approved, the requestor will be invited to apply for funding.

• Such needs may include:
  • Capital program expenses (programs that should carry the Santikos name).
  • Capital project expenses (“brick and mortar” projects that should display the Santikos name).
  • Unique opportunities to collaborate with other funders on a capital project or program.
  • Unique opportunities to collaborate with other funders
• Grant requests may include:
  • Capital program or project expenses.
  • Operating expenses that are needed after the capital project is complete.

Our giving history 

Since 2000, the Nationwide Foundation has contributed more than $700 million to nonprofit organizations across the country that work to meet crucial needs in communities with a significant presence of Nationwide associates.

In 2006, the foundation pledged the largest gift in its history, granting $50 million to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Over the last eight years, the foundation gifted the hospital with an additional $100 million in grants to establish and support the Nationwide Foundation Pediatric Innovation Fund.

The Nationwide Foundation also helps maximize the impact of personal gifts by matching, dollar for dollar, associate contributions through our Nationwide Cares Campaign, our Associates Helping Associates program and gifts to accredited higher-education institutions.

Supporting Nonprofits

The San Antonio Area Foundation supports nonprofit through grants, strengthens nonprofits through a variety of capacity-building services and sustains organizations with financial tools.

Animal Services

Our Impact

Prior to 2006, San Antonio had the third highest euthanasia rate of pets per capita in the country, with 50,000 animals euthanized annually. For 10 years from 2007 – 2017, the San Antonio Area Foundation partnered with the animal welfare community including nonprofit animal shelters, spay/neuter clinics, animal rescue organizations, and involved citizens working with the City of San Antonio to help improve the lives of people and pets through the Animal No-Kill Initiative.

Over 10 years, the San Antonio Area Foundation through its Animal No-Kill Fund and Talk About It! Program helped organize and promote adoption events, pet fiestas, low cost shot clinics and:

• Invested in grant and program funding to local animal services nonprofits for No-Kill projects through this initiative.
• Funded over 94,000 pets to be spayed/neutered, preventing 1,700,000 dogs/cats from being born and contributing to overpopulation of stray and free-roaming dogs and cats.

These efforts helped increase the live release rate at the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services from 11 percent in 2006 to 90 percent in 2016 and maintain a live release rate of over 90% since then.
