Grant Opportunities

Our grant-making is centered on understanding our community needs, building meaningful relationships with our stakeholders, and being responsive to the feedback we receive about our grant processes. We invest in the nonprofit community using trust-based philanthropic principles to guide our grant efforts.

By partnering with the community, we aim to close the opportunity gap for the people in San Antonio who need it most. We offer general operating support to nonprofits of all sizes, to allow organizations to focus on meeting their mission and addressing the needs of individuals and communities they serve. In addition, providing multi-year support allows our nonprofit partners to achieve greater stability and greater ability to plan for future sustainability.

Our primary impact areas of Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, Youth Success and Animal Services guide the bulk of our grant-making efforts. However, we offer a range of grant opportunities for organizations meeting their communities’ needs.

Special and Urgent Needs

To provide rapid response funding for nonprofits facing unexpected challenges that threaten service delivery and/or unexpected opportunities to expand services.

Funding Overview

When other funding sources are not available, the Special and Urgent Needs grant provides rapid response support when an unexpected and unbudgeted need critical to operations would prevent an organization from fulfilling its mission.

One-time grants of up to $10,000 are provided to help organizations respond to an urgent need that could not have been anticipated or allows them to take advantage of an unforeseen opportunity.

Community Grants

LCRA supports local communities in its service area with grants of up to $50,000 through the Community Grants program. Tax-exempt nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply, as well as city and county entities and special districts. The grants are awarded twice a year for capital improvement projects. Grant projects must improve the value of a capital asset by building, renovating or purchasing equipment, and must benefit an entire community. 

The program was established in 1995 to provide funds to rural, economically challenged communities that have difficulty fundraising for their needed projects. LCRA Community Grants support economic diversification in local communities; contribute to the health, safety and development of a community; or improve the quality or quantity of services essential for the development of viable communities and economic growth.

Grant application requirements

LCRA awards up to $50,000 for capital improvement projects that benefit an entire community. To celebrate the program’s 30th anniversary, LCRA also will award an additional grant of up to $100,000 in each of the July 2025 and January 2026 grant cycles.

Applicants requesting more than $5,000 in grant funding must supply matching funds of at least 20% of the total project cost. Proposals must include plans, detailed budget, financials, vendor quotes or estimates, and IRS determination documentation.

Responsive Grants

The Responsive Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership, convening power, and capacity building efforts to advance equity in San Antonio. By providing general operating awards, we take an asset-based approach to allow organizations to focus on mission and address the needs of individuals and communities they serve.

In speaking with many of our nonprofit partners, we heard that the shift to multi-year grants and our deepening commitment to putting trust-based philanthropy into practice has provided an element of stability during a time when so much is in flux. For many, this translated into a greater ability to plan for the coming year and in turn, greater stability in the programs and services this provides for our communities. 

By partnering with the community, the Responsive Grants process aims to close the opportunity gap for the people in San Antonio who need it most. Our primary five impact areas include: Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, and Youth Success. 

We recognize that our shift to multi-year funding is challenging for organizations who are not recent grant recipients and would benefit from an opportunity to apply for funding through a competitive grant process. We continue to work with our staff, board, and non-profit partners to identify and invest in programs that support your work outside of the Responsive grants, including capacity-building for nonprofits, peer learning and strategic partnerships. 

Cycle One: Cultural Vibrancy and Youth Success

Cultural Vibrancy

Supports organizations and programming that ensure access to arts and cultural programming and encourage broad participation from all parts of our community; reflect the diverse cultures of the San Antonio area; and promote the value of arts and culture through arts education, advocacy, and the integration of arts and culture across sectors through innovative collaboration. 

Youth Success

Supports organizations and programs that encourage the achievement of all youth within the community throughout a student’s education (cradle to career; address disparities across youth educational outcomes; provide equitable access to scholarships, and engage communities by strengthening youth leadership and providing educational activities for parents and caretakers. 

Since 2004, through the collective power of women, Impact San Antonio has awarded over $2.6 Million to nonprofit organizations in greater San Antonio and the surrounding area.

Kronkosky is committed to the prevention of child abuse and trafficking, care for victims of abuse, foster care programs, and parent education. Kronkosky also supports character development and enrichment for children and youth.

Livable and Resilient Communities

Supports organizations, programs and initiatives that further access to affordable, safe, and stable housing; transportation; wellness resources and public spaces; public-private partnerships to create sustainable opportunities and address disparities in these areas across the San Antonio area; and platforms for community/stakeholder voice and leadership.

Successful Aging

Supports organizations and programs that address the needs of older adults and their caregivers; recognize their ongoing contributions to diverse communities across the San Antonio area; provide opportunities for older adults to engage and connect; and build awareness of and collaboration between existing resources. 

Background

The Community Impact Fund is a responsive, open, competitive application process with one annual deadline. The Fund invests in four areas: Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Environment, and Youth Development. The Foundation considers funding for both general operating support and program support. Organizations are eligible to request funding annually. Prior recipients may reapply after a final report has been submitted to the Foundation.

Community Impact Areas

The Community Impact Fund invests in four focus areas: Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Environment, and Youth Development.

Arts & Culture

In 2024, the Community Impact Fund will support arts and culture by funding organizations that present, produce, or provide arts programming for the public; art forms supported can be dance, design, folk arts, literature, media arts, music, opera, performance arts, theatre, public art, and visual arts. Additionally, organizations that promote and/or preserve the Hill Country’s history and culture will be considered.

Basic Needs

In 2024, the Community Impact Fund will support basic needs by funding organizations and programs that address hunger, poverty, literacy, neglect, family violence, lack of access to basic medical care, homelessness, the needs of seniors and veterans, the needs of those with disabilities or chronic illness, and animal welfare.

Environment

In 2024, the Community Impact Fund will support the environment by funding organizations and programs that address environmental stewardship and/or education. Nature education, energy and water conservation, land stewardship, wildlife protection, recycling and repurposing, and maintaining dark skies are all priorities that will be considered.

Youth Development

In 2024, the Community Impact Fund will support the next generation by funding organizations and programs that work with children and youth, from birth through age 21.

Two Types of Support

Applicant organizations should decide whether to apply for general operating support or for program support; either type of request is eligible for the Community Impact Fund. Requests should not exceed more than $15,000.

General Operating Support is unrestricted funding. Organizations may use the funds for administrative purposes, to meet monthly obligations, to support programming, pay salaries, or to meet other organizational needs. For general operating support requests, organizations must submit a current strategic plan that covers two or more years of operations.

Program Support is funding for a specific program of an organization. Funds can be used for any element of the program’s budget. For program support requests, organizations must submit a program budget.

Capital & Naming Rights Grants

The Capital/Naming Rights Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership and unique opportunities to advance equity in San Antonio. This process enables the Area Foundation to provide funding for capital naming rights programs outside of the triennial responsive grant process. Proposals may be submitted to the Area Foundation, reviewed by Area Foundation staff; and, if approved, the requestor will be invited to apply for funding.

• Such needs may include:
  • Capital program expenses (programs that should carry the Santikos name).
  • Capital project expenses (“brick and mortar” projects that should display the Santikos name).
  • Unique opportunities to collaborate with other funders on a capital project or program.
  • Unique opportunities to collaborate with other funders
• Grant requests may include:
  • Capital program or project expenses.
  • Operating expenses that are needed after the capital project is complete.

Capital/Naming Rights and Collaborative are one-time grants awarded to organizations whose services align with the vision of at least one of our four primary impact areas.

Burns & McDonnell and its Foundation have partnered with PLTW to increase access and participation to PLTW programs for students located in Burns & McDonnell communities. PLTW programs empower students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges.

Through this partnership, Burns and McDonnell is supporting PLTW grants to schools interested in starting and expanding PLTW programs beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Program Requirements

Grantee must use their grant funds to expand their existing PLTW Gateway program. Example expansion activities include but are not limited to adding an additional PLTW Gateway unit not previously offered, and/or adding additional class periods of an existing PLTW Gateway unit previously offered, and/or training additional teachers in a PLTW Gateway unit for the 2026-2027 academic year. Grantee must complete one year of grant reporting.

Program Requirements

Grantee must offer at least one PLTW Launch module in the 2026-2027 academic year and must offer one additional module for the 2027-2027 academic year (two different modules in two years). Grantee may implement any PLTW Launch modules of their choosing. Grantee must complete two years of grant reporting.

Supporting Nonprofits

The San Antonio Area Foundation supports nonprofit through grants, strengthens nonprofits through a variety of capacity-building services and sustains organizations with financial tools.

Animal Services

Our Impact

Prior to 2006, San Antonio had the third highest euthanasia rate of pets per capita in the country, with 50,000 animals euthanized annually. For 10 years from 2007 – 2017, the San Antonio Area Foundation partnered with the animal welfare community including nonprofit animal shelters, spay/neuter clinics, animal rescue organizations, and involved citizens working with the City of San Antonio to help improve the lives of people and pets through the Animal No-Kill Initiative.

Over 10 years, the San Antonio Area Foundation through its Animal No-Kill Fund and Talk About It! Program helped organize and promote adoption events, pet fiestas, low cost shot clinics and:

• Invested in grant and program funding to local animal services nonprofits for No-Kill projects through this initiative.
• Funded over 94,000 pets to be spayed/neutered, preventing 1,700,000 dogs/cats from being born and contributing to overpopulation of stray and free-roaming dogs and cats.

These efforts helped increase the live release rate at the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services from 11 percent in 2006 to 90 percent in 2016 and maintain a live release rate of over 90% since then.
