Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials.

IBMA  Foundation Project Grants

The IBMA Foundation awards project grants each year, usually in amounts between $1,000 and $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 2, 2024. Projects must align with the Foundation’s mission in one of the following areas

• Arts & culture
• Education
• Literary or academic programs
• History preservation

The CFNV Community Investment Funds support Northern Virginia's nonprofit sector through grants aimed at critical needs such as child development, education, mental health, and more. Organizations that have received funding since 2016 are eligible to apply, with grants ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 based on budget size. This initiative focuses on organizational strengthening and immediate client needs, ensuring vital services remain accessible during challenging times.

The Arnold Shultz Fund, established by the IBMA Foundation, aims to enhance diversity in bluegrass music by providing $30,000 annually in grants. This initiative supports individuals, schools, and organizations dedicated to inclusivity, particularly among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The fund honors Arnold Shultz, a pivotal African American musician who mentored Bill Monroe, and continues his legacy by funding educational opportunities for young musicians and promoting bluegrass music in diverse communities.

The Edgar A. Thurman Charitable Foundation for Children provides financial support to 501(c)(3) organizations serving needy children in Virginia, particularly in the Western region and Roanoke Valley. Grants typically range from $3,000 to $10,000 for first-time applicants, while returning grantees may receive up to $20,000. Eligible organizations must demonstrate a commitment to the welfare and education of children, ensuring compliance with all grant conditions.

The ESVCF Community Grants Program supports capital projects and ongoing programs that positively impact residents of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Grants of up to $50,000 are available for initiatives in areas such as arts, education, health, and community welfare. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations that directly benefit local communities, with a focus on sustainable outcomes and collaboration. Priority is given to projects that demonstrate significant community benefits and innovative solutions.

Virginia Natural Gas offers a Charitable Giving program focusing on children and education, particularly supporting programs that assist those with physical, medical, or educational challenges. Emphasizing STEM initiatives for K-12 students, the grant is available to IRS-designated 501(c)(3) organizations in their service area. However, they do not fund individuals, religious organizations, or private K-12 schools, ensuring their contributions make a meaningful impact in the community.

The Community Grants for Educational Success aim to enhance educational achievement for underperforming children and youth in South Hampton Roads. By supporting innovative programs, the grant focuses on preparing students for kindergarten, preventing dropouts, and facilitating transitions to higher education. The initiative emphasizes the importance of education in fostering economic development and personal prosperity, aiming for measurable outcomes like improved graduation rates and increased enrollment in post-secondary education.

The Freeman Family Foundation Grant aims to enhance Virginia communities by funding organizations dedicated to the arts, children, and environmental causes. Established by Margaret and Robert Freeman, the foundation continues their philanthropic legacy, focusing primarily on 501(c)(3) exempt organizations. Applications must be submitted online or via accessible formats for assistive technology users. While there are no program or geographic limitations, preference is given to initiatives based in Virginia.
