Preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin

In keeping with our mission, the DNR is dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin. In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) Program

The purpose of BIG is to construct, renovate and maintain boating infrastructure facilities for transient recreational vessels at least 26 feet long.

Project Cost

• Construction, renovation and maintenance of boating infrastructure tie-up facilities, solely for transient recreational vessels 26 feet or more in length. Does not include: Commercial vessels, cruise ships, dive boats, ferries and vessels that operate permanently from the proposed project location.
• Produce information and education materials specific to BIG or BIG funded projects (i.e. charts, cruising guides, and brochures).

Special Conditions or Requirements

• Facilities constructed, operated or maintained with grant funds must offer reasonable access for all transient recreational vessels for the full period of their useful life.
• Facilities must be open to the public during reasonable time periods.
• Entities may charge fees. Fees must be comparable to the prevailing rate in the area.
• New construction and renovations must be designed to last throughout its useful life.
• BIG grants require a minimum of 25% matching funds, federal share not to exceed 75% total costs.

The Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) Program has two Tiers: Tier 1 - State; and Tier 2 - National

Tier 1 - State

Provides up to $300,000 per year to the state of Wisconsin. Projects are competitively ranked within the state.

The Fred C. & Katherine B. Andersen Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the quality of life in the St. Croix Valley of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with priorities in healthcare, education, housing, human services, civic initiatives, and environmental education. While capital requests may be considered, the foundation primarily funds operational and programmatic needs. Organizations outside the geographic area may be considered if they align with the foundation's funding priorities.

County Forest Land Acquisition Grants

Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program

In 2007, the Wisconsin Legislature made changes to the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program (s. 23.0953, Wis. Stats.) allowing counties with lands entered under the County Forest Program (s. 28.11, Wis. Stats. [exit DNR]) to compete for land acquisition funding under Stewardship.

Grant applications are evaluated jointly by a ranking panel consisting of staff from DNR Forestry and the Wisconsin County Forests Association (WCFA) and selected for funding based on ranking criteria and priorities set forth in s. NR 51.960, Wis. Adm. Code [exit DNR].

Healthy Lakes & Rivers Grants

Healthy Lakes & Rivers grants provide funding to qualified organizations to help facilitate the installation of practices on public or private property to improve habitat and water quality. They support five simple and inexpensive best practices including fish sticks, native plantings, diversions, rock infiltrations, and rain gardens. Practices must follow department guidelines published in the Healthy Lakes and Rivers Action Plan and supporting technical guidance. The Albrecht Memorial Scholarship, provided by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports students with disabilities from five local high schools in Rock County to pursue post-secondary education at UW-Whitewater. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum GPA of 2.5 and provide proof of disability. This initiative reflects the foundation's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and matching personal philanthropy with community needs, ensuring a lasting impact in Southern Wisconsin.

The Curt Marzolf Memorial Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, offers financial assistance to graduating seniors from Monroe, Argyle, Juda, or South Wayne high schools pursuing engineering studies at accredited colleges. This scholarship aims to support students who maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and encourages applicants with interests in hunting, fishing, or related fields, although this is not a requirement. It reflects a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in Southern Wisconsin.

The Doug & Janice Steinback Family Scholarship is offered by the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin to assist students from Southwest Wisconsin pursuing degrees in agriculture, life sciences, biology, or chemistry. Eligible applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and may receive preference if they demonstrate involvement in community activities or financial need. This scholarship aims to support local high school graduates from specific counties in their academic endeavors.

The Janesville Multicultural Teacher Scholarship (JMTS) is a renewable scholarship aimed at high school students from multicultural backgrounds pursuing a career in education. Sponsored by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, this program requires applicants to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and commit to applying for employment within the School District of Janesville after receiving their Educator Certification. PFund Foundation

PFund Foundation builds equity with LGBTQ+ communities across the Upper Midwest by providing grants and scholarships, developing leaders, and inspiring giving.

Community Grants

PFund Community Grants are for LGBTQ+ serving nonprofits in the Upper Midwest. These grants range from $1,000-$20,000+ and include organizational membership to the PFund Leadership Institute, a monthly cohort based learning and networking opportunity.

• PRISM Fund

PRISM (Promoting Rural Interconnections for Sexual Minorities). Fund supports rural LGBTQ+ serving nonprofit organizations. Grants are made possible by the Northwest Area Foundation.

• TRANScend Fund

TRANScend Fund supports Trans & gender nonconforming serving nonprofit organizations and programs. Grants are made possible by Drop Deadlift Gorgeous and donors.

• Bi+ Fund

Bisexual Fund supports noprofit organizations primarily serving the bisexual community, including but not limited to bisexual, omnisexual, pansexual, polysexual, or sexually fluid. Grants are made possible by an endowed fund. 

The Joseph L. Runde Memorial Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports deserving female seniors from various high schools, including Hazel Green and Belmont, who aspire to pursue degrees in healthcare sciences. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship exemplifies the foundation's commitment to enhancing education and fostering personal philanthropy in the Southern Wisconsin community.

The Joseph Thomas Wyss Hockey Scholarship, offered by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports graduating seniors from select high schools who are active participants in hockey. Eligible students must plan to attend an accredited college or university and have been involved in the Monroe Avalanche Hockey or Monroe Youth Hockey programs. This scholarship aims to promote educational opportunities for dedicated athletes in the region.

The North Crawford Scholarship, offered by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, aims to provide educational opportunities for graduates of North Crawford High School. The Platteville Consumers Cooperative Scholarship, administered by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports graduating seniors from several high schools in the region pursuing education in agriculture or agribusiness. This initiative aims to enhance local educational opportunities and foster community growth by assisting students in their transition to post-secondary education. Eligible high schools include Belmont, Benton, Cuba City, and others, underscoring the commitment to supporting youth in Southern Wisconsin.

The Richard W. Rote Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports high school graduates from Monroe, WI, planning to attend accredited technical schools. While preference may be given to those demonstrating financial need, it is not a strict requirement. This scholarship aims to enhance educational opportunities and empower local students, contributing positively to the community's future.

The Rock Prairie United Presbyterian Church Scholarship, provided by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports current and past graduates from local high schools, emphasizing active church membership and community service. Eligible students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This initiative reflects the foundation's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities while connecting personal philanthropy with community needs, ensuring that local youth have access to necessary resources for their academic journeys.

Nonprofit organizations with a verifiable U.S. tax ID working in Wisconsin can apply for Encova Foundation of West Virginia grants to support community health, wellness, education, safety, and children’s programs. 501(c)(3) organizations that impact health care or public health, especially those with active Encova associate involvement, may be especially competitive.

The Ronald J. Jelinek Memorial Fund for Welding Education, managed by the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, provides scholarships for individuals seeking to enhance their welding skills. Open to residents of Rock County, this fund supports educational expenses including tuition, books, and necessary supplies. By bridging personal philanthropy with community needs, it aims to empower local students and adults in pursuing their educational goals in welding.

The Sonya Sauer Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports students attending accredited colleges, universities, or technical schools full-time. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Preference is given to those pursuing elementary education or religious studies, as well as to students demonstrating financial need. This initiative enhances educational opportunities for local students from Beloit Memorial, Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, and Milton High Schools.

Project Lead The Way is offering a rolling grant opportunity for schools across the US to implement the PLTW Gateway program for the first time. With total funding of $9,100, the grant covers participation fees and training registration costs. Schools, including public, private, and charter, are encouraged to apply, particularly those serving low-income and minority majority populations. This initiative aims to enhance educational pathways in STEM for diverse student groups.
