Who We Are & What We Do

On November 26, 1997, a small group of citizens with an abundance of enthusiasm embarked on a mission to secure the quality of life in our region now and forever. By yearend, they had a modest $1,050. Through commitment and vision, the Quincy Area Community Foundation expanded and grew to become the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri. 

Serving 12 counties on both sides of the Mississippi River, we operate as a bridge between our donors’ charitable visions and the nonprofit organizations that bring those visions to life. 

Communityworks Endowment Fund

Communities in Illinois, Missouri, and across the country face challenges in early childhood education, workforce development, and land use and protection. However, many lack the resources to address and advance them. In 2003, the Grand Victoria Foundation (GVF) launched the Communityworks initiative to strengthen Illinois Community Foundations’ ability to do so.

After securing three rounds of support from GVF and leading a two-year effort to identify challenges and opportunities in these three target areas, your Community Foundation established its Communityworks Endowment Fund, which is open to 501(c)(3) organizations or units of government that advances workforce development, childcare, and early childhood education in Adams, Brown, Hancock, and Pike Counties, IL.

Meanwhile, the Community Foundation continues to evaluate changing needs and opportunities in these critical focus areas in order to make strategic, meaningful grants.

CommunityWorks Fund Priorities

ISSUE AREA 1

Early Childhood Education Long-Term Vision:

• To have a large pool of educated providers who see themselves as professionals who take advantage of the ongoing opportunities to grow in their field.
• To educate parents on the benefits and value of choosing quality child care.
• Increase revenue streams for child care providers over and above parent fees and raise value / respect for child care profession.

Early Childhood Education Short-term Vision:

• Improve the quality and quantity of the region’s child care settings.

Goals:

• Encourage providers to maintain and improve the quality of their child care programs.
• Increase community awareness of child care's impact on our communities.
• Strengthen the relationship and involvement between parents, providers, and employers.
• Improve provider retention in the child care field.

ISSUE AREA 2

Workforce Development Long-Term Vision:

• Ensure current and future workers are prepared with the skills needed to fill a variety of existing, expanding, and new employment opportunities that provide livable wages and benefits to ensure workforce sustainability.

Workforce Development Short-term Vision:

• Improve essential and technical skills in the region.

Goals:

• Identify high-priority workforce needs and individuals to help fill them.
• Increase access to and participation in skills training to fulfill high-priority workforce needs.
• Reduce barriers for individuals to enter the workforce.
• Provide supports for individuals to successfully remain in the workforce.

Ameren has partnered with PLTW to inspire students and provide the hands-on STEM learning experiences necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom. Ameren is a long-time supporter of K-12 STEM education in the region and is working with PLTW to provide grant support to high schools interested in implementing or expanding their PLTW Engineering programs.

PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. The program's courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.

Through this partnership, Ameren has committed funds to support PLTW grants to schools interested in starting or expanding PLTW Engineering programs beginning in the next academic year.

The hands-on program boosts classroom engagement and excitement, drives collaboration, and inspires “aha! moments” and deep comprehension. And as students engage in PLTW's activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they see a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond.

Through this partnership, Ameren has committed funds to support PLTW grants to schools interested in starting or expanding PLTW Gateway programs beginning in the next academic year.

Robert & Barbara Girouard Endowment

About the Fund

Enlisting in the United States Air Force was one of the best decisions Robert (Bob) and Barbara (Barb) Girouard ever made. In fact, the two met at Iraklion Air Station in Crete, Greece and credit the military for creating an “avenue of success”.

“We have been so incredibly blessed. Serving in the Air Force gave us job opportunity, education and lifelong friends that we never imagined we would have growing up, so now we feel it is time to give something back,” said Barb.

When Bob and Barb were looking to make a difference in the community where they have spent their adult life, they decided to create an endowment fund at the Community Foundation to support veterans in West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri by establishing the Robert and Barbara Girouard Endowment.

Grant Purpose

The Robert & Barbara Girouard Endowment provides financial support to postsecondary and vocational training institutions for the support of Veterans’ education. Grants may be used to provide financial assistance for honorably discharged Veterans, including tuition, books, fees, and related expenses for honorably discharged Veterans or for the support of educational or vocational training and programs offered to Veterans.

Community Foundation of the Quincy Area

My Community Foundation (also known as The Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri) is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving quality of life in the communities it serves by connecting compassionate donors with meaningful causes. The foundation works with individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofit partners to gather charitable contributions, grow those funds through professional investment strategies, and grant the earnings in ways that address local needs now and into the future. It builds and manages permanent endowments tailored to donors’ goals, ensuring their philanthropic visions—whether honoring a loved one, establishing a legacy, or supporting community needs—are realized. Serving a 12-county region across West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri, the foundation acts as a steward of charitable assets, helping donors make a lasting impact through customized giving opportunities, community grants, and strategic support for nonprofit organizations.

Teens Active in Grantmaking (TAG)

TAG (Teens Active in Grantmaking) is a chance for high school students in Quincy to make real change in their community. From September to May, TAG members meet monthly to explore the world of community leadership, philanthropy, and civic engagement. Through hands-on learning, guest speakers, and team collaboration, members gain a deeper understanding of local issues and how nonprofits make a difference.

Whether you're passionate about mental health, food access, education, or creating more opportunities for youth, TAG gives you the tools (and trust!) to turn ideas into impact.

Quincy High School Class of 1957 Scholarship Fund

Quincy High School Class of 1957 Scholarship Fund provides scholarship support to graduates of Quincy Senior High School who are pursuing post-secondary education. The fund is intended for Quincy Senior High School graduates enrolling in an accredited four-year college or university. Eligibility and selection criteria are coordinated through the school, and interested students are advised to contact their school guidance counselor for application details. Scholarships are awarded annually in the spring.

Kenneth & Eleanor Lohr Memorial Scholarship Fund provides scholarship assistance to graduating seniors or graduates of Quincy Senior High School who intend to enter or major in the field of pharmacy. The scholarship supports students pursuing post-secondary education aligned with pharmaceutical studies. Eligibility requirements and application criteria are administered through the school, and interested students should contact their school guidance counselor for details. Awards are granted annually in the spring.

George & Sharen Borrowman Agriculture Scholarship Fund

George & Sharen Borrowman Agriculture Scholarship Fund supports former students or graduates of John Wood Community College who are continuing their education at an accredited four-year college or university. Eligible applicants must be entering their junior or senior year and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in an agriculture-related field. Application criteria and additional requirements are administered through the school, and interested students should contact their school guidance counselor for guidance. Scholarships are awarded annually in the spring.

F. Lee & Joan Kammerlohr  Family Scholarship

F. Lee & Joan Kammerlohr Family Scholarship provides scholarship support to graduating seniors from Quincy Senior High School who intend to pursue a career in education, with a preference for elementary education. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years, supporting students throughout their undergraduate studies. Eligibility requirements and application criteria are coordinated through the school, and interested students should contact their school guidance counselor for details. Awards are made annually in the spring.
