The Homeless Animals Support Network Fund

This fund, entrusted to the foundation in 2023, is the next step in the evolution of the Homeless Animals Support Network - HASN’s mission to meet the needs of homeless animals all over Virginia.

The work began in October of 2012 as a non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to saving lives and advocating for homeless animals in Prince William County. Realizing the need for assistance stretches across the state, HASN expanded to help other small animal rescue organizations throughout Virginia.

The purpose of the fund is to provide support on an as-needed basis for small rescues and shelters throughout the state of Virginia, to aid in the shared goal of a No-Kill VA. Realizing that not all rescues and communities have access to needed resources, the fund will bridge the gap by advocating for and providing grant assistance and resources to underserved and impoverished communities and homeless pets all across Virginia. Small shelters are defined as those with budgets of $300,000 or less.

Program examples include:

• Foster programs aimed at keeping pets out of animal shelters,
• Return to Home programs that assist owners through technology, microchipping, and other resources,
• Shelter Surrender Intervention aimed at assisting pet owners in need or crisis, to prevent them from surrendering their pets to the shelter,
• Foster programs for victims of domestic violence or those facing temporary traumatic instances,

With the support of their membership and over 65 years of financial knowledge, UNFCU founded the UNFCU Foundation in 2015.

Grant Opportunities

We support projects that align with our mission to sustain the path out of poverty for women and youth. These projects must also help to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. To be eligible for funding, over 50% of the proposed project’s beneficiaries must be women or girls.

Areas of Focus

Our goal is to empower women and youth with fundamental human rights. To accomplish this, we accept grant applications for projects focused on education, livelihood training, and health care. Each year, we also select an additional strategic focus to deepen our philanthropic impact. This year, particular consideration will be given to projects who provide digital upskilling to economically vulnerable women and youth. Note: projects funding humanitarian relief efforts are by invitation only.

Education

Our education projects work to ensure everyone has the opportunity to grow, learn, and prosper. We look to empower girls and women through education so they can unleash their full potential within their community. We also educate boys on the critical role girls and women play in families and societies, to break down antiquated norms around gender.

Livelihood Training

Our livelihood training projects create economic opportunities and job prospects for women so they can earn their own incomes.

Livelihood training equips women with the skills and experience they need to rise out of poverty permanently, and bring their families and communities along with them.

We fund livelihood training that focuses on the following:

• Computer skills training
• Customer service training
• Entrepreneurial strategies
• Seed money for new businesses
• Training in specific sectors, like farming

Health Care

We fund projects that ensure proper access to health care for women and girls, including reproductive care.

When women are at their healthiest, physically and emotionally, they can also succeed economically. No one should fear losing their job in order to take care of their physical or mental health.

We fund health care projects that focus on the following:

• Protecting reproductive rights
• Providing healthcare to homeless populations
• Providing access to free or low-cost care
• Providing mental health assistance
• Supporting emotional health and building self-esteem

Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to supporting children in need across various communities. Through local chapters, SCC addresses unique challenges such as homelessness, foster care, and health issues by providing funding to non-profit organizations focused on children's welfare. Priority is given to applications from organizations aiding the homeless and victims of trafficking. SCC aims to ensure every child has equal opportunities regardless of their circumstances.

The Community Grants for Economic Stability aim to foster self-sufficiency in southeastern Virginia by providing funding for programs that help individuals overcome barriers to success. Since 1950, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation has supported initiatives focused on ending homelessness, enhancing workforce readiness, and promoting financial literacy. These grants are available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve residents in South Hampton Roads, ensuring economic stability and improved quality of life for vulnerable populations.

The Norfolk Southern Grant aims to support nonprofits in the Hampton Roads community, distributing $1 million each year for five years. It focuses on critical areas such as education, community enrichment, and sustainability, encouraging organizations to address issues like food insecurity, homelessness, and workforce development. Eligible nonprofits must be 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, operational since at least January 1, 2023, and serving the South Hampton Roads area. This grant fosters impactful community initiatives.

The goal of the Virginia Housing Trust Fund Homeless Reduction Grant program is to reduce homelessness in the Commonwealth of Virginia. DHCD will support Continuum of Care (CoC)/balance of state local planning group (LPG) strategies and homeless service projects that are or will be a part of an effective emergency crisis response system to ensure that homelessness is rare, brief, and one-time.

The Homeless Reduction Grant program must be coordinated with other community-based activities. All CoCs, LPGs, and DHCD homeless services grantees use a local centralized or coordinated assessment/entry system. A local centralized or coordinated assessment/entry system is the best practice for a housing-focused approach targeted toward helping households experiencing homelessness quickly regain stability in permanent housing.

Priority consideration will be given to efforts to reduce the number of youth and families experiencing homelessness. Funding will be awarded to projects best aligned with state and federal goals to end homelessness in communities throughout the commonwealth. 

The Home Office Giving Program by the CarMax Foundation supports nonprofits in the Greater Richmond, Virginia area, focusing on education, health, and community resilience. With over $65 million invested in local causes, the program aims to uplift underserved youth and adults through initiatives in workforce readiness, health education, and neighborhood revitalization. This commitment reflects CarMax's dedication to fostering thriving communities and empowering individuals, ensuring a brighter future for families in the region.
