Eligible projects must focus on cultural expression and be accessible to the community, emphasizing artistic significance and addressing under-resourced disciplines. The grant is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and aims to enhance local cultural production and community engagement.

Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials.

IBMA  Foundation Project Grants

The IBMA Foundation awards project grants each year, usually in amounts between $1,000 and $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 2, 2024. Projects must align with the Foundation’s mission in one of the following areas

Prairie Meadows Event Sponsorships & Donations provides vital support to nonprofit organizations in Iowa, enhancing community initiatives through event sponsorships and in-kind donations. As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Prairie Meadows focuses on promoting arts, culture, education, and economic development. Applications for funding are accepted year-round, ensuring a broad range of projects can benefit from their resources, fostering growth and community engagement throughout the region.

The PCIF Community Impact Grants, offered by the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, support innovative projects that enhance the quality of life for all residents in Pottawattamie County. Eligible applicants include tax-exempt nonprofits and government entities. The grants focus on various sectors such as arts, education, health, and community improvement. In the last funding cycle, 42 grants totaling $65,364 were awarded, emphasizing the Foundation's commitment to fostering impactful community initiatives.

The Wherewithal Research Grant, funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation, supports DC-area artists with $5,000 grants for ideation, research, and experimentation. Since 2019, it has aided 156 artists with a total of $400,000. Applicants must be local artists with a history of visual arts presentation, and grants can be used for compensation, collaborative projects, and research-related expenses. Administered by Wells Fargo Bank, it awards 3 to 5 grants annually, typically ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, to organizations that qualify as 501(c)(3) entities.

The Farrington Historical Foundation Grants support 501(c)(3) organizations in Santa Clara County, California, focusing on arts, animal protection, environmental conservation, and historic preservation. Annually, the foundation allocates a portion of its investable assets to community grants.
