About Community Foundation of South Alabama

Since its inception, the Community Foundation has grown to over 500 funds and awarded over $98 million in grants and scholarships throughout the eight counties of southwest Alabama, improving the lives of many residents in our corner of the world.

We amplify the gifts from generous donors through wise investment, support others in efforts to enhance our community, and lead and collaborate on initiatives which have a broad impact.

Scholarships

The more than 40 scholarship funds at the Foundation were created by generous donors who wanted to help the students in our community achieve a brighter future. We are committed to assisting the most promising students with scholarships for professional certificate programs, two and four-year undergraduate degrees and graduate school. The scholarship funds at the Foundation award grants to high school, community college and university students to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Alfred F. Delchamps Sr. Memorial Fund

This scholarship is for a USA junior or senior in the Department of Teacher Education that demonstrates financial need. The student must be a teaching candidate, have a minimum 3.2 GPA, and provide evidence of interest/involvement in educational groups.

Arbor Rising Grant, established in 2010, is a NYC-based nonprofit providing unrestricted multi-year funding and capacity-building support to nonprofits focused on alleviating poverty. The grant process occurs every three years, with the next round in 2025 being invitation-only. Eligible organizations must demonstrate high potential and effective leadership, typically operating on a modest budget. Arbor Rising prioritizes applicants from the NYC metro area while expanding to cover the lower 48 US states.

The Toy Foundation Program offers a unique opportunity for nonprofit organizations to apply for toy donations to support children in need. The application period runs from January to June, with approved applicants receiving toys by the end of the year. This initiative, part of the Toy Chest program, has positively impacted over 35 million children since 2003, promoting play as essential for emotional and educational development.

This program aims to simplify the grant application process, especially for smaller municipalities, by providing one-on-one support and facilitating collaboration among cohort members. By participating, cities can maximize the impact of federal dollars and strengthen their communities in the wake of economic challenges.

Friends of NRA

Friends of NRA is the National Rifle Association’s premier fundraising program, supporting the future of shooting sports. Since day one, Friends of NRA has been a 100% grassroots effort fueled by a united front to secure the Second Amendment and raise money for the shooting sports.

Committee volunteers are appointed to State Fund Committees to make recommendations for local grant funding in areas such as youth education, women-focused clinics, law enforcement training, hunter safety, range improvement, firearms and marksmanship training and safety. Recognizing the impact American youth has on the future of the shooting sports, State Fund Committees frequently recommend grants for youth programs, allocating the most significant portion of monies to this vital area.

Grant awards fund activities and support programs in the United States to promote firearms and hunting safety, to enhance marksmanship skills of those in the shooting sports, and to educate the public about firearms in their historic, technological and artistic context.

Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program - Alabama

The Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program provides supplies, equipment, and financial support to a variety of qualified groups and programs at the local level; geared towards youth, women, law enforcement, veterans, the disabled, and the general public, including:

• General shooting programs
• Competitive shooting
• Education, training and safety
• Hunting and conservation
• Community outreach
• Historical education

Grant funding must be used to further a charitable purpose as defined by the Internal Revenue Code under section 501(c)(3) and accompanying rules, regulations, and other IRS law and materials.

The Anna Satcher Scholarship Support Fund provides financial assistance to graduating seniors of Mt. Liberty Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama. Established in memory of Wilmer and Anna Satcher, this fund supports students pursuing higher education or approved workforce training programs. The scholarship is renewable for four years, contingent upon maintaining eligibility. It covers tuition, housing, and other educational expenses, but availability may vary based on the fund's income. The Alabama State University Anniston/Calhoun County Alumni Scholarship Fund aims to support African American graduating seniors from Calhoun County who plan to attend Alabama State University. Established by the ASU Alumni, this fund reflects a commitment to education and community enhancement. It provides one-time scholarships for students pursuing associate or bachelor’s degrees, or approved workforce training programs, ensuring they receive necessary financial assistance for their educational journey.

South Arts Inc. is offering Literary Arts Grants to support writers, independent publishers, and literary organizations focusing on contemporary literature in the Southern U.S. Grants of up to $5,000 will fund projects in poetry, fiction, and other genres. Eligible applicants must be full-time residents of the South Arts region. The initiative aims to amplify the literary traditions of the American South, fostering creativity and community engagement through diverse literary projects.

South Arts, Inc. offers Literary Arts Grants to support Southern independent publishers and small presses with funding up to $5,000. These grants aim to amplify contemporary literary arts and foster community engagement through projects like reading series and festivals. Eligible applicants must be based in the South Arts Region and demonstrate a commitment to advancing literary traditions. This initiative enhances access to the arts and promotes cultural vitality across the Southern states.

The David, Helen and Marian Woodward Fund, established by Marian Woodward Ottley in 1974, aims to support non-profit organizations in Georgia and neighboring states. The fund prioritizes capital projects and educational programs that enhance graduation rates, particularly those with religious affiliations. Grants are awarded exclusively to 501(c)(3) organizations, while governmental agencies can also apply. The foundation's mission underscores a commitment to improving the world for future generations.

The Alabama Sports Officials Foundation Scholarship is designed to support Alabama sports officials and their families in pursuing higher education. This one-time award assists students enrolled in accredited institutions in Alabama, covering tuition, housing, supplies, and fees. Funded by the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama, the scholarship aims to recognize the contributions of sports officials while encouraging applicants to seek additional financial resources.

The Melba Bayers Meyer Charitable Trust, established in 1995, supports various charitable causes in Pensacola, Florida, and Alabama. The trust prioritizes organizations that assist children, indigent Native Americans, and neglected animals. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations focusing on religious, charitable, scientific, or educational purposes. The trust aims to make a positive impact in the community by addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.

The WGPF: Legends & Lore Marker Grant Program celebrates and promotes local folklore, legends, and folklife as vital aspects of cultural heritage. Targeted at 501(c)(3) organizations and government entities across 14 US states, it aims to enhance cultural tourism by commemorating community stories. Successful applications typically focus on folktales, historical legends, and community traditions, while excluding purely literary works or personal folklore that lacks broader community significance.

William H. Coleman, Sr. Scholarship Fund

The purpose of fund is to promote continued growth and career advancement through higher education in a nursing career to nurses and health care providers that are currently employed at Highlands Medical Center.

ADECA Healthy Food Financing Program

The Healthy Food Financing Program was approved in 2015 by the Alabama Legislature with the intent of ensuring that healthy foods at affordable prices are available to Alabamians. The grants are designed to help businesses and non-profit organizations with projects that can supply fresh fruits, vegetables and other grocery items to neighborhoods and communities with limited access to grocery stores.

ADECA awards projects annually based on competition to food banks, food pantries, farmers markets, schools, and grocery stores.

The RJJB Family Foundation, established in 1997 by Rodney and Jeanna Pilot, aims to foster a legacy of philanthropy in coastal Alabama. Committed to supporting 501(c)(3) non-profits, the foundation focuses on education, community economic needs, and Christian ministry. Guided by the Pilot family's shared values and passions, the foundation strives to create lasting positive changes in the community, ensuring their contributions lead to causes of eternal significance.

The US Department of Health & Human Services announces a competitive funding opportunity for the Head Start/Early Head Start programs across various states. This initiative aims to enhance services for low-income families and children, promoting their social and economic well-being. With approximately $818.3 million available, the program seeks to expand access to quality early childhood education, thereby strengthening community stability and prosperity. The Daniel Foundation of Alabama provides operating grants, up to $25,000, aimed at strengthening communities and enhancing quality of life. Key focus areas include early childhood education, K-12 academic improvements, adult life skills, arts and community support, and health services. Eligible organizations must be based in Alabama and meet specific criteria, including revenue limits and employee requirements, to qualify for funding to benefit local residents.

The Daniel Foundation of Alabama offers Special Project Grants aimed at substantial capital projects, new programming, or strategic expansions that significantly enhance community life. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)3 public charities and can only apply again after a two-year hiatus. These grants are not intended for ongoing operational costs. The foundation's mission is to support initiatives that improve the quality of life for Alabama citizens through healthy and educational advancements.

The Appalachian Landscapes Project Capital Grant, offered by the Open Space Institute, supports vital conservation initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity and enhancing landscape connectivity. Established in 1974, the OSI has protected over 2.5 million acres in the Eastern US and Canada, focusing on land that ensures clean drinking water and wildlife habitats. This grant is specifically for projects within the Appalachian Landscapes Project service area, promoting sustainable community benefits.

The Alabama RC&D Grants support community projects aimed at enhancing local resources and quality of life. They offer funding for both Education Fund Projects, which must include an educational component, and General Fund Projects, which do not. Eligible applicants include 501c3 non-profit organizations and government entities. With nine councils across Alabama, projects involving multiple councils may apply for statewide grants to maximize impact.

The Alabama Power Foundation offers Scholar Grants to support public school teachers in grades two to eight, providing funding up to $7,500 for professional development and instructional resources aimed at improving student achievement in math and English language arts. The program prioritizes schools demonstrating financial need, ensuring effective collaboration among teachers to enhance educational outcomes. With a focus on innovative teaching tools and ongoing professional growth, these grants aim to empower educators and foster student success.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) offers grants for schools to implement the PLTW Computer Science program from 2025 to 2028. Schools must provide at least one PLTW course in the first year and two courses in the second year. The total grant is $14,000, covering participation fees and training costs. Eligible institutions include public, private, and charter schools located in the U.S., with special encouragement for those serving low-income or minority-majority populations.

Project Lead The Way is offering a rolling grant opportunity for schools to implement the PLTW Engineering program for the 2025-2026 academic year and beyond. Eligible institutions include public, private, and charter schools located in the US. Grant recipients will receive funding to cover participation fees and training costs. Total funding amounts to $16,000, distributed over three years. Schools are encouraged to create pathways for students in engineering through this initiative.
