Community Capital Fund

The Klarman Family Foundation
Private
Massachusetts
US $250,000 - US $1,000,000

The Community Capital Fund

The Klarman Family Foundation is committed to expanding access to critical services and enrichment opportunities that help make Massachusetts communities stronger, healthier, and more vibrant. We recognize that community-based organizations of all sizes and across a variety of mission areas play crucial roles in strengthening the fabric of neighborhoods.

Community-based organizations often struggle to raise funds to support critical investments in physical assets (e.g., facilities and open space). These investments are necessary so they may deliver and sustain high-quality operations and advance their vision and mission.

The Foundation believes that investments in physical assets help create a permanence that benefits the broader community. The Community Capital Fund (CCF) provides funding to support the development, improvement, or ownership of physical assets. This funding initiative aims to counter disparities in access to funding across Massachusetts and prioritizes organizations operating in the Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, and Roxbury, as well as the cities of Brockton, Lawrence, Lynn, New Bedford, and Springfield.

The Community Capital Fund supports facilities or land acquisition; construction; renovation; repair; preservation and major equipment. In some cases, funding will also support technical assistance to help organizations develop or assess the feasibility of a project, or engage expertise necessary to execute the project successfully.

Through this funding initiative, The Klarman Family Foundation hopes community-based organizations will be better positioned to make their space and neighborhoods more vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive. At the same time, The Klarman Family Foundation seeks to deepen and expand its relationships within, and knowledge of more communities throughout Boston and Massachusetts. We know we do not have all the answers and expect our funding approach to evolve over time based on what we learn.

Our work in this area is guided by the following principles:

  • Staying locally informed: We prioritize funding for organizations and projects rooted in their neighborhoods.
  • Addressing barriers to capital: We prioritize funding to communities that have limited access to philanthropy.
  • Looking for bold approaches: We are ready to take risks as an early or leading funder.
  • Creating lasting benefit: We invest in projects that address community needs in meaningful, sustainable ways.
  • Knowing one size doesn’t fit all: We are flexible and adapt our support based on the size, type and urgency of need.

Jim & Caroline Deinema Canton Community Foundation

Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation
Private
Lincoln County, South Dakota

About Us

We come to work every day because we believe in the power of possibility.

We believe the Sioux Falls area is a great place to live, work, and play. We also believe we have a responsibility to help preserve and sustain what’s good here, and to champion ideas and movements that have the potential to make our community even better.

We believe that meaningful and important social impact comes from thinking outside the box and having the courage to dream big dreams.

We believe strongly in the power and purpose of philanthropy. To us, philanthropy is more than just gifts and grants — philanthropy is thinking about how we can leverage financial, intellectual and human capital to help create a stronger, more vibrant community.

Finally, we believe philanthropy challenges us all to consider two important questions about our future – questions that drive and inspire our work every day: If we don't join together to build a better tomorrow, who will? And if not now, when?

Jim & Caroline Deinema Canton Community Foundation

Founded in 1997, the Jim and Caroline Deinema Canton Community Foundation was created to improve the quality of life right here in our community. Gifts to the Foundation grow over time thanks to the benefit of a pooled investment that generates long-term asset growth.

Through the power of endowment, more than $100,000 has been granted to nonprofits and causes throughout the Canton area since our founding, touching the lives of people right here at home.

Lancaster County Weaver Awards

Lancaster County Community Foundation
Private
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
US $2,500

History

When Benjamin Franklin left 1,000 pounds in his will to the city of Boston for the “encouragement of worthy apprentice boys,” he did not know that as the needs and interests of our nation continued to change, the intent of his gift would no longer be applicable. It took more than 200 years for the courts to intervene and change his will so that his gift could again be relevant to our society (in fact, the Lancaster County Community Foundation is proud to manage a portion of this original trust).

In 1914, a new “community foundation” movement emerged that would change the way donor interests are met while adapting to changing circumstances. The Cleveland Foundation, a pioneer community trust, worked to ensure that charitable bequests live on in perpetuity, especially when original charitable purposes are no longer applicable. This innovative concept has now spread throughout the country in over 700 Community Foundations.

Lancaster County Weaver Awards

It might feel like everything is coming apart at the seams. That we’re disconnected from each other and can’t make a difference. That tuning out is the only way to get through the day.

But look around, and you’ll find there are more people weaving the social fabric of our community together than people trying to unravel it. In fact, you won’t have to look far to spot weavers.

Instead of tuning out, weavers turn up.

What’s a Weaver Award?

The Weaver Awards celebrate and support the people doing good in our community.

20 local individuals or small organizations throughout Lancaster County will be chosen to receive awards of $2,500 to grow their local impact and spark new connections.

Lowndes Community Foundation (LCF) Grants

Meeting the needs of Columbus and Lowndes County Communities—one grant at a time.

Sustainable Grantmaking

Our mission is to improve the quality of life within Columbus and Lowndes County. As a public foundation, we have a special role to play in creating a sustainable source of funding to address the needs of our community. Rather than relying on yearly fundraising, we draw on the investment earnings of the LCF Endowment, reinvesting a percentage into our communities while the remaining funds continue generating revenue for future projects.

Funding Priorities

Our community guides our grantmaking. Through the LCF's periodic Community Conversations--public gatherings where hundreds of local citizens come together to review current data on the state of the city and county and to engage in a democratic, deliberative process to identify our most pressing needs--we've identified five priority areas. In addition to these priority areas, we generally support initiatives within three areas of interest:

  • Civic and Cultural (e.g., beautification, public good, performing arts)
  • Education and Human Development (e.g., tuition guarantee, GED, early childhood)
  • Health and Human Services (e.g., family enrichment, emergency response)

The goal of community development grants is to strengthen community infrastructure and create employment opportunities by helping people learn applicable job skills, grow small businesses, and manage their finances better. Funders support these initiatives to boost local economies and give communities the resources they need to succeed, whether they're looking to address housing, education, or public health.

On average, community development grants provide funding between $250 and $25,000,000, with typical awards falling around $20,000 (median) and $377,355 (average). These insights can help nonprofits align their funding requests with what grantmakers typically offer in this space.

Funding for community development grants typically comes from government agencies, private foundations, and corporate programs. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are major federal sources for funding community development efforts.

Private donors, like the Erich and Hannah Sachs Foundation and the Kampe Family Foundation, invest in programs that aim to reduce poverty and promote social and economic mobility. Many corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives like the Bank Of America Charitable Foundation and the Keybank Foundation also support community development by funding workforce training, small business grants, and local economic projects.

To improve the chances of receiving community development grants, applicants should:

  • Align with key economic development goals – Show how your project supports specific goals for your community, such as job growth or an increase in small businesses.
  • Show clear results – Provide data to prove how your project results in job creation and impacts community development.
  • Build strong community partnerships – Collaborate with businesses, schools, and government agencies to increase support and strengthen your proposal.
