Since its inception, the Community Foundation has grown to over 500 funds and awarded over $98 million in grants and scholarships throughout the eight counties of southwest Alabama, improving the lives of many residents in our corner of the world.

Scholarships

The more than 40 scholarship funds at the Foundation were created by generous donors who wanted to help the students in our community achieve a brighter future. We are committed to assisting the most promising students with scholarships for professional certificate programs, two and four-year undergraduate degrees and graduate school. The scholarship funds at the Foundation award grants to high school, community college and university students to be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Hooper W. Matthews Jr. ScholarshipFund

The scholarship provides tuition assistance to juniors or seniors at the University of FL School of Forestry/Natural Resource Conservation, Milton Branch. Students must be from Escambia, Conecuh, Monroe, or North Baldwin. Scholarships are based on merit and financial need. Students must major in natural resource conservation, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and can be either full-time or part-time. Community or volunteer service is preferred. Recipients are eligible to reapply. 

The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF) offers education grants for Florida organizations, providing up to $7,500 for single-county projects and up to $15,000 for multi-county initiatives. The Express Health Information Outreach Awards aim to enhance public health by increasing access to biomedical information for U.S. health professionals and the general public. These awards support projects that improve health information literacy among consumers and caregivers, ensuring they can effectively find and utilize health information. Focused on partnerships and outreach to underrepresented communities, the initiative seeks to promote healthy behaviors, prevent illness, and improve health outcomes through informed decision-making.

The Florida Boating Improvement Program offers competitive grants to enhance boating access projects for motorized vessels in Florida. Funded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, eligible applicants include county governments and municipalities. The program supports various initiatives such as constructing boat ramps, piers, and educational projects that promote boating. This funding aims to improve recreational boating opportunities and stimulate local economic development related to water activities.

U.S. 501(c)(3) public nonprofits with program budgets between $1M and $4M seeking support for education, arts, or humanitarian projects, including those serving preschool-aged children in Florida, may be eligible. With a mission to foster individual growth and enhance communities, Andrew Family Foundation provides project support and opportunities for board engagement through its Board Grants program.

The P/Arts Program

The P/Arts Program was created to strengthen connections between the philanthropic, arts, and education communities, fostering meaningful collaborations that enrich learning and inspire growth.

Eligible applicants must be accredited 501(c)(3) organizations that integrate visual and/or performing arts education into their work. Through P/Arts, we seek to support programs that:

• Revitalize learning by enhancing and transforming outdated public school curricula.
• Motivate and inspire students of all ages, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.
• Empower educators by deepening professional development opportunities for teachers, professors, and childcare providers.

• Address inequities in education by helping to close the achievement gap and expand access to high-quality learning opportunities.

Community Foundation for Northeast Florida

The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida connects people who care with causes that matter. Since 1964, we have served the citizens of Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Baker, Clay, and Putnam counties through a range of charitable and civic activities, while helping individual donors achieve their philanthropic goals. Scholarships

Thanks to generous donors, The Community Foundation offers several scholarships each year that benefit students in Northeast Florida who are seeking post-secondary degrees.

Dr. Linda McLucas Fisher Scholarship

The Dr. Linda McLucas Fisher Scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate female students, 25 years old or older, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ). The award will provide up to $500 per semester to support tuition, books, and other college-related expenses. This scholarship is available for renewal each semester until graduation, given that the student continues to maintain eligibility requirements. 

The James M. Cox Foundation Grant offers support to nonprofit organizations focused on conservation, early childhood education, family empowerment, and health. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and located in areas where Cox Enterprises operates. Grant applications are accepted year-round, with deadlines before Trustee meetings. Preference is given to organizations with a history of local engagement. This foundation embodies the philanthropic spirit of its founder, James M. Cox, by giving back to the community.

The Sundt Foundation, established in 1999, supports local communities by offering grants and volunteer opportunities for 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Focused on youth development, hunger and nutrition, and veteran services, the Foundation prioritizes projects in regions such as the Southwest and Southeast United States. However, they do not fund requests exceeding $25,000 or support multi-year pledges, fundraising events, or political causes. Their mission continues to foster community connections and belonging.

CPTA Grant Program

FloridaCommerce is now accepting grant requests for the Community Planning Technical Assistance (CPTA) Grant Program for State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2026-2027. CPTA grants provide local governments located in Rural Areas of Opportunity (RAOs) and/or rural communities, counties, municipalities and regional planning councils the opportunity to create innovative plans and development strategies to promote a diverse economy, and meet statutory requirements for planning, while also protecting environmentally sensitive areas.

Technical assistance and training will be available to rural local governments awardees to help assist them in best practices relating to comprehensive planning, economic development and land development, as well as strategies to address management and administrative capacity challenges unique to rural local governments. Preference shall also be given to local governments located in a RAO. Understanding that many Florida communities have been impacted by hurricanes, CPTA grants may also be used to assist with disaster recovery, resiliency and economic development planning. 

Project Types

Projects should relate to community planning and economic development strategies that implement the requirements in the Community Planning Act. FloridaCommerce also encourages rural communities to apply for projects related to planning for disaster recovery and community resiliency, especially related to flooding, and that meet the requirements in Chapter 163.3178(2)(f), Florida Statutes. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding for innovative, creative or unique approaches to planning, development and infrastructure in their community.

The Veterans Assistance & Service Dog Funding Program, established by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation, aims to support 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving veterans. This initiative enhances services like healthcare, housing, and employment support, while also facilitating the provision of service dogs for veterans facing disabilities. Applications for 2025 are closed, but interested organizations can check back in January 2026. Grants will empower nonprofits to better assist veterans in their transition to civilian life.

The Van Metre Companies Foundation Grants support 501(c)(3) charitable organizations in education, medical, and human welfare services. With a legacy of nearly 70 years, Van Metre prioritizes innovation and community involvement, ensuring financial stability while delivering exceptional value through technology. Recognized as a Best Place to Work, their culture empowers employees and fosters a collaborative environment, reflecting a commitment to excellence and strategic growth in the Northern Virginia market.

The Dr. Harry J. Heeb Foundation Grant supports underprivileged and abused children, providing medical attention for related disabilities in the fields of eye, ear, nose, and throat health. It also funds education and training for healthcare providers and nurses. Operating primarily in Florida and Wisconsin, the foundation seeks to improve the lives of those in need through both direct support and research. Grants typically range from $2,500 to $20,000.

In 2013, the Florida Legislature amended Chapter 388.261, Florida Statutes, thereby providing the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) authority to distribute mosquito control funding provided through legislative appropriations from the state’s Solid Waste Trust Fund. It was further amended to include a provision that provides a portion of the allocated funds to specifically support research into practical methods of mosquito control for the benefit of all Florida mosquito control programs. In doing so, the legislature also opened the door to all Florida public colleges and universities to compete for funding that would benefit public health mosquito control operations statewide.

The Wawa Foundation offers Financial Grants through its Local Connection Grants program, providing funding under $2,500 to support local non-profit organizations. This initiative emphasizes health, hunger, and community heroes, ensuring that support is directed toward registered 501(c)(3) organizations within Wawa's operational areas. Applicants can expect feedback within four weeks after submission, with ongoing inquiries accepted until budget limits are reached, encouraging re-application for future funding.

The Wawa Foundation offers in-kind support to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations within its six-state area, focusing on health, hunger, and everyday heroes. Organizations can request product donations, such as Wawa brand beverages, or gift baskets for fundraising events. Requests must be made at least four weeks in advance, and support is subject to availability. This initiative aims to strengthen community ties and enhance local philanthropy through meaningful contributions.

The Wawa Foundation offers financial grants exceeding $2,500 to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in its six-state market, focusing on health, hunger, and supporting everyday heroes. Applications are accepted in January, April, July, and October, with grant requests reviewed prior to the next submission window. Eligible organizations include those working to improve lives through health initiatives, hunger relief efforts, and support for community heroes. The Competitive Personal Responsibility Education Program, funded by the US Department of Health & Human Services, aims to enhance educational projects for youth aged 10-19 and pregnant or parenting youth under 21. This initiative focuses on promoting abstinence and contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Projects must cover at least three adulthood preparation subjects, such as financial literacy and healthy relationships, to equip youth with essential life skills for successful transitions into adulthood.

The Public Humanities Program Grants, previously known as Community Project Grants, support initiatives that preserve and share Florida's rich history and culture. They encourage projects that bring communities together to explore their heritage and current civic life. Eligible applicants include Florida-based nonprofits and governments, and projects must involve humanities scholarship. In 2025, proposals marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will be prioritized, fostering collaboration among diverse community partners.

Florida public, private, and charter schools starting the PLTW Gateway middle school STEM program can receive US $9,100 in non-cash support to cover participation and core training fees. Grants from Project Lead The Way help schools nationwide, including Florida, launch new PLTW Gateway programs with six teacher training registrations and upcoming program fees covered.

The Arts in Rural Places Grant, offered by South Arts, aims to enhance access to the arts in rural and isolated communities across nine southern states. Grants of up to $3,000 support public activities featuring Southern artists, requiring a dollar-for-dollar cash match. Eligible organizations must host at least two public events and engage a professional artist, promoting cultural engagement and artistic expression within these communities.

The Sprouting School Gardens Grant, provided by the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, supports school-based gardening and cooking programs to foster healthy eating habits in children. Grants between $5,000 and $10,000 help cover program operations, supplies, and educator stipends. Eligible applicants include schools and 501(c)(3) nonprofits located in areas served by Sprouts Farmers Market, promoting meaningful connections between local teams and school gardening initiatives.
