Pillars of Giving

• Education: Each year, the Halliburton Foundation makes donations to U.S.-based elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities through the Education Advisory Board (EAB). We look at diverse programs that demonstrate excellence in preparing students with advanced skills for the oil and gas industry, considering factors such as opportunity for increased diversity in STEM, global perspective, and creativity.  
• Environment: Halliburton employees help revitalize trails in Colorado. The effort, which was led by the National Forest Foundation and the Colorado Fourteener Initiative, encourages volunteers to help protect the natural integrity of the Fourteeners, which are 54 mountain peaks reaching at least 14,000 feet in Colorado.
• Health & Safety: Across the world, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at increasing attention and support for the awareness, early detection, and treatment of this disease. There are almost 1.4 million new cases diagnosed each year. During October, employees worldwide participated in Halliburton’s “Go Pink” week by promoting breast cancer awareness in various ways.
• Social Services: For three days in early May, more than 70 volunteers from the Houston area – including Halliburton employees, family, and friends – helped renovate U.S. military veteran Carolyn Gatterson’s home. Rebuilding Together, a non-profit organization on a mission to repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives, organized the project.

Justin Brooks Fisher Foundation

The Justin Brooks Fisher Foundation has a multidimensional grant program; however, its core interest is in promoting conservation and sustainability. The Foundation’s main geographic focus is in Boulder, Colorado.

From 2007 through 2009, the Foundation was a principal supporter of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), an influential effort to raise awareness of the environmental risks of glacial melt conducted by National Geographic photographer James Balog. Working with the International Wilderness Leadership Foundation and the WILD Foundation, the EIS positioned 27 cameras in remote locations around the world that took photos every hour to document the rapid effects of global climate change on the earth’s glaciers.

Funding Priorities

The Foundation’s grant program primarily focuses on projects within the following areas:

The Leighty Foundation (TLF) is a small family foundation incorporated under Iowa law.  Directors and advisors live in Colorado, Alaska, and California.

Mission

To carry on the Leighty family legacy of service and stewardship by leveraging our time and talents, as well as our financial resources, primarily in the areas of Earth Protection, Education, Philanthropy, and Strategic Volunteer Engagement.Focus Areas Earth Protection “Environmental” has become trite, and does not convey the profound, urgent, and necessary changes in the way our species perceives and relates to our fellow species on Earth, and to its wonderful physical systems. The Leighty Foundation is especially interested in accelerating humanity’s transition to a sustainable, equitable, benign, affordable global energy system based entirely upon renewable energy sources — driven by radiant energy from our local star, the Sun, and by geothermal. Our earliest, most rewarding investments will be energy conservation and efficiency, while we invent and invest to “run the world on renewables.” We assist science education, so that we will better understand who and what and where we humans are, and to better understand Earth and our options for cooperation within its context and limits. Thus, we intend to invest wisely in Earth Protection, with both Foundation funds and with our personal involvement. An urgent Grand Challenge is transforming the world’s largest industry from about 80% fossil to nearly 100% renewable, CO2-emission-free energy sources, as quickly as we prudently and profitably can. Prudently: with acceptable social and economic disruption. Profitably: the huge amount of capital needed will flow only to attractive opportunities for returns. Electricity systems may be inadequate or technically and economically suboptimal for this transformation. Therefore, we now need to think beyond electricity, to comprehensively consider alternatives. Hydrogen (H2) and Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3) are attractive, energy carriers, storage media, and fuels – as complete renewable energy systems. The Leighty Foundation Earth Protection program focuses on the Big Three challenges of time-variable renewable generation:

• Gathering and transmission;
• Low-cost, annual-scale, firming storage;
• Distribution, integration, and end-use of energy services.

Strategic Volunteer Engagement Our nation finds itself faced with a perfect storm with shrinking resources and escalating needs. Meeting these needs will require a dramatic increase in the number of people willing to give their time and skills as well as their financial resources. However, the challenge may be less about increasing the number of people who volunteer, and more about building infrastructures which connect people with worthy opportunities, and empower them to make a meaningful difference.There is a growing awareness that even if Americans respond to the myriad of calls for service, many charities are not prepared to effectively engage them. A recent survey found that more than 30% of charities do not currently have the infrastructure to effectively deploy volunteers. Now is the time for us as funders to seize this unique opportunity to financially support nonprofits in building their capacity.

The LibertyGives Foundation is a Colorado non-profit organization formed by Liberty Media in 2007 to encourage and promote charitable giving. In 2010, the LibertyGives Foundation established a permanent theme for corporate giving: to support charities that address the needs of underprivileged and at-risk youth in Colorado, with a focus on proactive and preventative services. All recipient organizations have a Liberty Media employee who is actively engaged with the entity and acts as sponsor on its behalf.

We actively promote the values of giving and philanthropy among our employee base. Since its inception, the LibertyGives Foundation has contributed over $7 million to various recipient organizations. However, the reach of LibertyGives extends beyond these monetary contributions. Liberty Media employees are actively involved in the organizations for which they act as a sponsor, often through volunteer work and board representation, and this investment of time is often far more impactful than our investment of dollars. Additionally, Liberty Media offers all employees a 1:1 match on charitable contributions up to a limit of $10,000 per employee per year.

Archaeological Assessment Grants fund initial archaeological data collection and analysis. These projects lay the foundation for future work, site preservation, and/or interpretation.

Types of Archaeological Assessments

• Site-specific assessments develop baseline documentation for known archaeological sites and/or collections.
• Small survey assessments assess areas with known archaeological potential for archaeological resources.
• Research assessments test archaeological research methodologies.

Emergency Grant

Emergency grants provide funding for immediate stabilization work needed when a designated resource faces imminent danger of being lost, demolished, or seriously damaged due to sudden or unexpected acts of nature such as fire, flood, hail, or human interaction such as a vehicle crash. A specific event, such as a tornado that occurred on a specific date, should be cited in the application. Building failure/damage attributed to deferred maintenance is not defined as an emergency.

It is important that you contact our office immediately after the event has occurred (no more than three months). If a significant amount of time has transpired between the time of the event and the request for funding, it may affect your eligibility.

Emergency grants are limited in scope to the temporary stabilization of a building, structure, or site until permanent preservation measures can take place.

Historic Structure Assessment

Historic Structure Assessment grants are awarded for the sole purpose of preparing a report on the physical condition of a historic building or structure in accordance with a mandatory State Historical Fund assessment scope of work. Historic Structure Assessments must be prepared by an architect or a structural engineer working under the direct guidance of an architect. Other requirements include:

• Architect and/or structural engineer must be the primary consultant on the project. They cannot be the grant recipient contact.
• Architect and/or structural engineer must be familiar with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and licensed in the state of Colorado.
• Architect and/or structural engineer must attend an initial consultation with a Historic Preservation Specialist and Contracts Specialist at the commencement of the grant contract. At that meeting, whoever will be processing the financial reports and payment requests must also be present.
• Other professionals including engineers, archaeologists, historic preservation consultants, contractors, historians, and cost estimators may be members of the assessment team.

An assessment can assist property owners to make informed decisions about future restoration and maintenance efforts. If an assessment grant is awarded, it should have final approval from State Historical Fund staff before a Competitive Grant application is submitted for physical work to the property.

Planning Grant

The Planning grant can include any planning documents which will help the project move forward, giving projects more flexibility to prepare for future physical work.

Planning grants should be completed by consultants that are experienced and familiar with planning projects. The selected consultant should be knowledgeable in applying the Secretary of Interior's Standards for physical work and nomination activity. Such projects may include:

Grants

Through our community investments, we support the advancement of community leaders, community organizations, and community networks.

For most grants, our team will approach an organization directly to invite them to submit a grant proposal. Throughout the year we also review unsolicited grant proposals that align to our giving areas. Our grants are unrestricted for general operating purposes to help expand an organizations’ mission and ability to do their important work. Our funding primarily supports organizations in Baltimore as well as in Colorado Springs, San Francisco, and New York that have an approved nonprofit status.

Land, facilities, and civic infrastructure are long-term assets that can transform the ability of nonprofit and community organizations to serve Colorado communities. For this reason, the Gates Family Foundation invests in capital projects across the state, in both rural and urban areas. We strive to be responsive to each community’s unique needs and opportunities.

Our capital grants are generally limited to comprehensive capital campaigns, which are typically for building purchases, construction, expansion, renovation, and/or land acquisition. Only nonprofit organizations with capital projects that benefit Colorado and its residents are qualified to apply. When making funding decisions, we prioritize:

• Projects that address root problems with substantive solutions
• Projects with strong evidence of support from the community and the organization’s board
• Projects in rural and low-income areas across Colorado where there are fewer individuals and institutions providing support for capital projects
• Projects that serve individuals and communities of color who have faced historic inequities and lack of access to funding
• Projects that reinforce the foundation’s strategic priorities in K-12 public education, natural resources, community development, and informed communities
• Projects that address climate change, and/or incorporate green building and sustainable development practices

Priority Funding Areas

We fund capital projects within five categories that overlap somewhat with the Foundation’s strategic priorities, but are broader in scope in order to be more responsive to community needs.

Arts & Culture

The Foundation supports cultural organizations that:

• enhance the quality of community life while also strengthening the economy
• link a community with its heritage and contribute to usable community infrastructure
• serve as an educational resource for children, youth, and adults.

Funding examples in this area are:

• libraries & museums
• community theaters
• performing arts organizations
• historic preservation that contributes to community revitalization

Education

The Foundation supports major capital projects for:

• charter schools that serve a substantial proportion of low-income students (generally, at least 50% of the student body will qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch), have demonstrated high academic achievement, and are utilizing a sustainable financial model
• public schools in rural areas that have planned capital improvements which are heavily used by the community, and that reinforce the long-term viability of the area
• licensed early childhood education centers with particular, but not exclusive, interest in rural areas of the state to assure readiness for elementary school and to strengthen rural economies
• organizations that provide life-long learning and experiential learning to a broad audience
• independent school and public and private university capital campaigns on a highly selective basis

Funding examples in this area:

• participation in the matching requirement for a charter school receiving a BEST grant
• rural school improving its auditorium or athletic field for school and community use
• rural community establishing an early childhood education center to fill an unmet need
• early childhood education center making significant facility improvements in order to advance the quality of care for the children served
• facility improvements for an organization that provides adult GED, literacy, or vocational training
• on a highly selective basis, support for public and private universities with campaigns to improve their science, technology, library, and engineering related facilities

Well-being of Children, Youth & Families

The Foundation supports organizations that encourage individuals to:

• develop greater self-sufficiency, including the well-being and independence of disadvantaged families and the elderly
• increase leadership and life skills
• maintain good health and well-being rather than cure disease

The Foundation supports capital projects that:

• invest in land and water protection that safeguards important natural resources, habitat, and the health of natural systems
• help preserve the state’s ranching and agricultural legacy and encourage smart land use patterns
• construct and improve urban and mountain parks and open space for public recreation and access
• maintain the state’s urban and mountain trail systems
• provide recreation, environmental education and leadership opportunities for young people
• encourage the spirit of scientific inquiry as well as the preservation of natural habitat

Community Development & Revitalization

The Foundation invests in projects that:

• have the potential to reinforce and enhance the economic vitality of a community
• involve partnerships between public and private sector organizations that seek to improve the economic and cultural health of communities

• restoration of historically significant architecture that contributes to community revitalization
• development of rural main streets as a means of promoting community revitalization
• heritage tourism as a means of promoting economic health for rural areas
• public-private partnerships for economic development

Chinook Fund Grants

Chinook Fund seeds community-led, systemic change by mobilizing resources for and trusting in grassroots social justice organizations across Colorado. With 37 years of social impact, Chinook Fund has distributed $5.1 million to over 570 organizations. Honoring our racial justice commitment, 90 percent of grantee groups were led by Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. 

We give grantees money, it is true, but also something else. A grant from Chinook Fund draws groups closer to Colorado’s progressive social change movement, via our unique grassroots community-led grantmaking process in which applicants meet each other and meet the grantmakers, who are also working in Colorado’s progressive social change movement.

Chinook funds organizations working to challenge the root causes of oppression, rather than treating the symptoms. Chinook believes the root causes of our most serious social problems include systemic racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, ableism and ageism. We identify effective social change as efforts that strive to include these key elements:

• Constituent-Led: The work is led by the people most impacted by injustice.  Unlike a traditional charity model, we believe that those most affected by the issue have the vision and solutions for their own liberation – and that the development of their leadership, skills, and power should be prioritized. (How does the organization demonstrate their work is driven by the people it affects? Does leadership make-up reflect the people most affected by an issue or oppression holding roles where they can shape the strategies and terms of their own liberation? FOR YOUTH ORGANIZING: How is youth voice being incorporated into leadership? Is there a youth advisory board or other decision-making body?)
• Community-Wide: The work reflects all members of the constituency, especially those who experience multiple forms of oppression.  This ensures that change for the community leaves no one behind, especially for those who have less privilege within the community. (Does the organization work towards change that will affect all members of a constituency that are exploited, oppressed, or marginalized – taking into account those that face multiple oppressions? Is the organization working to build a multi-racial, multi-class, multi-gendered social justice movement?)
• Lasting Effect: The work makes change not just for one individual today, but for the community as a whole, and for future generations.  Generally this means organizing collective action to change systems and institutions. (Will the proposed work help build concrete and lasting political power to address the underlying causes of the problems that it addresses? How does this organization define the root cause of the issue they are working to change?)

Types of Funding

Start-Up Grants are available to groups that are younger than 4 years old. Groups must demonstrate a vision and plan for meeting Chinook Fund criteria, but do not need a proven track record of success. Groups can apply multiple times in this category, as long as they are younger than 4 years old. The maximum grant award is $4,000.

Established Grants are available to any group, but the competition for grants is tougher, as it includes organizations that have been working successfully on social justice issues for a number of years. The maximum grant award is $10,000.

Multi-Year Grants are sometimes considered, depending on funding available, for organizations who apply in the Established category and have been funded at least twice during the last three years.

The Douglas County Community Foundation (DCCF) was created to help preserve and enrich the quality of life through consolidated efforts in Douglas County, Colorado. By establishing a community foundation, Douglas County can focus on the community’s greatest needs through people, donors, charities, organizations, businesses, and government agencies together with charitable giving and philanthropy.

In 2000, with initial funding from corporations and several prominent Douglas County business leaders, DCCF was formed as an affiliate of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation. DCCF received 501(c)(3) status in October 2006 and became a stand-alone foundation in 2018. The Douglas County Community Foundation's mission is to provide leadership and responsible stewardship of philanthropic resources to strengthen our community and enrich the lives of every resident in Douglas County.

The Philip S. Miller Competitive Grants

The Philip S. Miller Competitive Grants, awarded annually by Douglas County, are designed to support non-profit organizations in Douglas County, Colorado, through a competitive grant process. These grants, stemming from the Philip S. Miller Trust, are intended to fund programs and services that address community needs such as self-sufficiency, at-risk youth, suicide prevention, senior programming, and gaps in medical and mental health services. The Douglas County Community Foundation (DCCF) administers the grant program, while the Board of County Commissioners makes the final funding decisions. 

Innovation Station Fund

The Innovation Station Fund provides grants to schools and nonprofits in Weld and Larimer county of Colorado for the creation of innovative, hands-on learning spaces.

What is an Innovation Station?

An Innovation Stations is a unique, hands-on space where kids can learn by doing, making and creating. A place where FAIL is an acronym for “First Attempt In Learning” and creators aren’t afraid to go back to the drawing board.

The Collins Foundation was established by William Ray Collins and Ruth E. Collins for charitable, religious and educational purposes and organizations within Boulder County, Colorado. NOCO UNIFY is proud to be able to provide funding to a number of child-focused nonprofit organizations throughout Northern Colorado.

Northern Colorado United for Youth (NOCO UNIFY) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization centered around raising money for charities serving disadvantaged children in Northern Colorado.

Since the beginning, we have made it a priority to be a fundraising pillar in our community as well as an organization where young and emerging leaders can immerse themselves into the community, develop strong leadership skills, and grow. NOCO UNIFY aims to expand the base of community service by having young community leaders take part in philanthropic events earlier in life. The SFG is intended to be a dollar amount LESS THAN 20% of an organization's annual budget.

Successfully leading a nonprofit in today’s world takes endless dedication and time. Yet, nonprofit leaders are often so committed to their missions that spending time away to re-energize can be an afterthought. The Nonprofit Sabbatical Program aims to recognize and reward long-term and respected nonprofit leaders in Colorado and strengthen the organizations they lead by offering funds for interim leadership and staff capacity building. The program offers nonprofit executives the opportunity to step away from professional responsibilities and take time for themselves for rejuvenation. Ideally, the executive returns to their professional life with new ideas and a fresh sense of commitment to their work, the nonprofit sector as well as the health and health equity of all Coloradans.

Our three cornerstones are “must-haves” in all we do and guide us on our path to addressing the deepest, most historically entrenched inequities. We expect our partners to prioritize these cornerstones in their work alongside us. This commitment necessitates that we prioritize a diverse cohort of grantees whose work and values are in alignment with our cornerstones and who represent a range of identities including race/ethnicity, gender identity, ability/disability identity, sexual orientation as well as geographic area.Up to five sabbaticals will be awarded annually. Each sabbatical must be taken within 18 months of the receipt of the award.

The sabbatical award is made in the form of a grant – up to $100,000 – for charitable support to a Colorado-based nonprofit organization and includes:

• Grantee executive to take three-to-four month hiatus for activities of their choice to reflect, rest and rejuvenate:
• Up to $20,000 for sabbatical activities (e.g., professional development; travel; personal activities)
• Between $25,000-$55,000 subsidy for salary and benefits (dependent on current salary)
• Grantee interim leadership needs (individual or a team):
• Up to $10,000 to support interim leadership needs while grantee is away on sabbatical.
• Grantee staff capacity building needs
• Up to $15,000 to be used during the sabbatical period or up to two years after receipt of the award
• Organizations will need to demonstrate how staff have been involved in determining use of these funds to ensure that they are used for employee-directed needs

Anschutz Family Foundation Grant

Anschutz Family Foundation’s mission is purposely broad, allowing it to support endeavors that strengthen families and communities and help individuals become productive and responsible citizens. The Foundation has a special interest in self-sufficiency, community development and programs aimed at the economically disadvantaged, the young, the elderly and the disabled. The Foundation is also dedicated to funding efforts in rural Colorado.

Funding

Typical grants range between $5,000-$10,000, but generally do not exceed 10 percent of an organization’s annual budget.

About the Foundation

Mr. Walter E. Lipe was a generous member of the Denver, Colorado community. His compassion for people led him to create a perpetual charitable trust to benefit the sick and disabled of Denver. Although Mr. Lipe passed away in 1960, his generosity will continue to help this cause for many years to come.

About the Foundation

The Edward Madigan Foundation was established under the Last Will and Testament of Edward J. Madigan. Mr. Madigan was a resident of Denver, Colorado, and he worked as a chemist and manager. He died on April 6, 1979.

Herbert Parker was a lifelong resident of Denver, Colorado who worked as a tile contractor in the construction industry. The Herbert E. Parker Charitable Trust was established in 1982, pursuant to the terms of his Last Will and Testament, to fulfill his desire to further cancer research and to improve the lives of underprivileged children and children with special needs.

Mission

To carry out the donor’s stated preferences to support cancer research, the care and education of children with intellectual disabilities, and sporting programs for youth, particularly underprivileged children.

There are no program limitations; however, in accordance with the donor’s stated preferences, the foundation has a practice of primarily supporting cancer research, the care and education of children with intellectual disabilities, and sporting programs for youth, particularly underprivileged children.

H. Chase Stone Trust

The H. Chase Stone Trust grants funds primarily in El Paso County, Colorado to support, sustain, and develop charitable organizations operating in this area. Currently these funds are designated to support primarily performing, literary, and fine arts organizations that benefit the entire El Paso County community.

Who We Are

The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado fosters collaboration, serves as a catalyst for community projects, and is a trusted steward and service provider to philanthropists and nonprofit organizations. We manage and administer over 500 charitable funds and over $185 million in assets (as of June 30, 2021). Donations to our funds are tax deductible and grants from the funds are distributed to public charities, schools, and churches based on the charitable intent of our donors. Our staff and board are 100% local, and we have served Northern Colorado since 1975.

The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado meets national standards for operational quality, donor service and accountability in the community foundation sector. This accreditation provides our donors with peace of mind and the knowledge that funds are managed in compliance with established best practices and the highest standards for community philanthropy.

Loveland Generations Fund

The Loveland Community Fund is an endowment supported by local residents since 1992 to provide a sustainable funding source for long-term community benefit.

A committee comprised of community members from Loveland (the Loveland Community Fund Committee) provides input to the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees and staff and is responsible for recommending grants from unrestricted and field of interest funds established to support the Loveland community, including the Loveland Community Fund.

For more than three decades from its roots as Denver Active 20-30, the Denver Children’s Foundation (DCF) has been changing the trajectories of children in Colorado through financial grants to organizations that directly support at-risk, disadvantaged children in our community. But, that’s not all. We also go deeper with a few select charities providing business and other supporting activities to help those organizations grow and thrive. Our membership’s comprised of young, talented professionals who bring experience and fresh ideas to the table. Receiving support from DCF is not easy, but it’s worth it.

Funding Strategy

At DCF, we’ve developed a strategic grant giving strategy that’s aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty among children during their formative years. Obviously, there are many charities doing amazing work in our community. But, we choose to partner with those that have the greatest impact on four areas of a child’s life: Education, Health & Wellbeing, Child Advocacy, and Personal Enrichment.

Education

There’s a growing gap in the quality of education that’s available to children due to socioeconomic, disability, and other situations. At DCF, we support organizations that help students prepare for each step in their educational journey and eventually find gainful employment in our community.

Health & Well-Being

Physical and mental health affects children across all backgrounds and levels of socioeconomic status. As such, DCF supports organizations that eliminate socioeconomic barriers from access to quality healthcare while promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Child Advocacy

We believe that our perspectives of the world shape our actions.
