CT Humanities: Project Grants

Project Grants support the planning or execution of humanities projects, such as exhibitions, public programs, and interpretive digital media projects. The implementation stage is intended for projects that are ready to bring to fruition.

Receipt of a Project grant in the Planning Phase does not guarantee a Project grant in the Implementation phase. However a competitive Project grant application for the Implementation phase will discuss the research, planning, and development work conducted leading up to the grant request.

All Project Grant proposals must demonstrate significant humanities scholarship and content and articulate clearly defined goals that will be achieved during the project.

About University of California Humanities Research InstituteThe University of California Humanities Research Institute facilitates experimental, interdisciplinary humanities scholarship through partnerships, research initiatives, and competitive grants. As a grantmaking organization, UCHRI primarily funds UC faculty and graduate students who participate in innovative research and projects that engage a variety of disciplines and stakeholders.Supplemental Multicampus Faculty Working Group Sustenance FundingThe UCHRI Supplemental Multicampus Faculty Working Group Sustenance Funding grant provides financial resources to broaden and augment the support of Multicampus Faculty Working Groups engaging with the Institute’s new theme, Sustenance. Faculty working on themes outside of the Sustenance initiative are not eligible to apply for this supplement.Some possible outcomes may include creative responses such as exhibitions, interactive websites, and interpretative performances; they may be tied to activism and include documents like policy proposals or records of involvement with union work within the university; they may take the form of pedagogical recommendations and proposals for cross-campus seminars; or they may be linked to the strengthening or development of relationships with community partners.

The Harold H. Bate Foundation provides financial support to enhance education, youth, recreation, and quality of life in Craven, Pamlico, and Jones Counties, as well as East Carolina University. Grants are available to 501(c)(3) organizations serving these areas, ensuring that the legacy of philanthropist Harold H. Bate lives on. However, grants are not made to individuals, political campaigns, or religious organizations for theological purposes, maintaining a focus on community benefit.

The Lincoln Way Community Foundation offers annual grants to support nonprofit organizations in rural Clinton County, fostering community connections and addressing local needs. Eligible applicants include 501(c)3 nonprofits and public institutions operating within anti-discrimination laws. However, funds are not available for annual fundraising, endowment funds, or individual grants. This initiative aims to inspire collaboration and resource sharing for generations to come.

The Kentucky Social Welfare Foundation Grant supports non-profit organizations serving Kentucky residents, focusing on enhancing social welfare for those facing economic hardships. Established in 1948, it prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion while targeting rural areas and communities in need. Grants are awarded for program expansion or new initiatives that promote self-help and training. Eligible applicants must be IRS-approved charitable organizations based in Kentucky, ensuring their projects align with the foundation's core values.

The New Mexico Humanities Council offers Subaward Grants aimed at supporting humanities-focused nonprofit organizations, tribal governments, and governmental institutions. Grants are limited to $2,000 and are designed to foster publicly accessible projects that promote dialogue and inquiry in communities. Interested applicants must schedule a consultation with NMHC staff and submit an eligibility screening form. The funding process is responsive, aiming to reduce the time between application submission and initial payment.

The Tides Stronger Together Fund, under the Tides Foundation, provides essential support grants to fiscally sponsored partners focused on historically underserved communities. By building organizational capacity and leadership, the fund empowers community changemakers to address inequities and enhance sustainability. With a pooled funding model, it directly responds to the needs of over 120 partners, ensuring resources are effectively allocated where they are most impactful, ultimately fostering long-term community resilience.

The Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation provides funding to support charitable, educational, religious, and scientific initiatives that benefit the Central Florida area. Established in 1959, the foundation has supported various institutions, including the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum and Rollins College. Grants can range from a few thousand dollars to over $1 million, with a focus on organizations exempt from federal taxation under 501(c)(3). Organizations may apply once per funding cycle, but repetitive funding is discouraged.

Although we will consider all humanistic topics, UCHRI is particularly interested in working groups that approach humanistic problems broadly related to its new theme, Sustenance. The initiative addresses sustenance and sustainability as material and metaphor to better understand the forms and outputs of human community building and disintegration as well as of our planetary predicament. 

The Harold M. Greaney Trust Fund Grant supports nonprofit organizations serving Perry County, focusing on programs that benefit local citizens. Established by Harold Greaney, a dedicated community member, the fund aims to continue his legacy of philanthropy. Eligible applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) organizations or have a fiscal sponsor. Projects can occur between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027, adhering to the fund's guidelines to ensure sustainability and community impact.

The Sweet Grass Community Foundation offers Micro Grants to support local organizations in addressing unexpected, urgent, or one-time expenses. Eligible applicants include 501(c)3 organizations and government entities serving Sweet Grass County residents. However, requests for recurring expenses, travel, and payroll are not funded. This initiative aims to strengthen community efforts and enhance the capacity of local organizations to fulfill their missions effectively.

The Making A Difference Community Improvement Project Grant, offered by the Hinton Area Foundation, aims to enhance Summers County by funding community improvement projects that foster engagement among residents. Preference is given to applications requesting matching funds, ensuring sustainable initiatives that benefit the local community. This grant supports efforts in various areas including education, health, and public recreation, with the ultimate goal of creating a vibrant and thriving environment for all community members.

Community Event Sponsorships

Each year, we devote a small portion of our operating budget to support area nonprofit organizations’ events. We know these events are vital to your organization’s fiscal health, that they help you more deeply connect with community partners, and that they offer opportunities to celebrate and elevate your organization’s impact, milestones, and mission. Event sponsorships also offer our staff and volunteers the opportunity to engage and partner with your team, and to learn more about your organization.

How can my organization apply for an Event Sponsorship?

We review and decline / award sponsorship requests on a first come, first serve basis beginning each fiscal year start of April 1, so the earlier you apply, the better! Our easy-to-use form captures all of information needed for us to make a funding decision. Once a request has been submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation email, and we will notify you of our funding decision within 5-7 business days after submission.

How much money can my organization receive?

You can apply for any amount, but our awards are typically between $500 and $1,500.

How do you decide which requests to fund?

We strive to fund Community Event Sponsorships in a fair and equitable way. We carefully consider each request to ensure that we are funding a wide variety of events who represent some or all of the following criteria:

• Donor audiences
• A variety of nonprofit sectors
• Our broad geographic region
• Underserved / underrepresented groups and populations

The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation provides grants to 501(c)(3) organizations in the Western New York area. Established in 1956, it supports diverse charitable purposes and encourages applications from various sectors, including religious, educational, and scientific organizations. The Sweet Grass Community Impact Granting program, managed by the Sweet Grass Community Foundation, supports 501(c)3 organizations addressing critical needs in Sweet Grass County. Grants up to $10,000 are available annually, with a focus on initiatives that fulfill organizational missions and demonstrate a history of community impact. Projects must be completed within a year, and funding excludes payroll expenses and retroactive project costs.

The Lake County Resilience Grant provides crucial funding to nonprofit organizations in Lake County, Indiana, affected by federal and state funding cuts. With up to $600,000 available over two years, organizations can receive grants up to $40,000 to address financial losses and sustain essential services. This initiative supports community needs, promoting stability and continuity in the nonprofit sector while prioritizing organizations with a healthy balance sheet.

The Micro-Grants Program offers funding between $250 and $500 for small projects in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, and Tioga counties. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations, school districts, and municipalities. Grants support small purchases, supplies, and unexpected expenses. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with decisions made within 10 business days. Each organization may submit only one request per calendar year. Note: Funding is limited and will close when allocated funds are depleted.

UCHRI was founded by UC President David Gardner in 1987 as a centerpiece of the University of California’s system-wide investment in humanities research. Over the past three decades UCHRI has promoted innovation and leadership in the practice and sharing of collaborative humanistic research across all 10 UC campuses, nationally, and globally.

Faculty Summer Research Funding

UCHRI is pleased to offer $5,000 summer research awards for UC faculty to conduct research during Summer. Priority will be given to early-career scholars and to projects related to UCHRI’s new theme, Sustenance. Awards should support work on a research project that requires travel, fieldwork, the consultation of archives, and related needs during the Summer quarter.

Faculty Summer Research Funding aims to stimulate new research and publication in the humanities by:

• providing funding to individuals pursuing innovative research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.
• supporting active research projects, but especially early-stage research requiring travel.

The Fox Family Foundation

The Fox Family Foundation accepts grant requests, from the beginning of September to the last Friday in October. Grant awards are announced prior to the year end, and distributions of those grants made shortly thereafter. Grant amounts vary, but are typically between $500 and $1,000 each. 

The Fox Family Foundation was established in 2005 for the purpose of providing an ongoing philanthropic support to non-profit organizations, even if not designated as a 501(c)3. A preference in the selection process is given to those organizations located in Southeastern Colorado. The foundation commends all applicants for their hard work and worthy endeavors to better their community and the wider community. The Foundation is precluded from providing grant awards for political-based organizations.

The Community IDEAS Grant Program, managed by the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation, aims to foster community-led change in Minnesota. With a total of nine grants of $125,000 each available in 2026, this program targets diverse communities, including Greater Minnesota, the Twin Cities Metro Area, and Native-led organizations. Eligible organizations must be nonprofit entities based in Minnesota, committed to using funds for charitable purposes that benefit their communities.

The Kate Siebert Charitable Foundation Grant supports organizations in the Titusville area of Crawford County, PA, with 501(c)(3) public charity status. It prioritizes projects that provide year-round programming, offer direct services, and address community needs. Eligible applicants must demonstrate measurable outcomes and sustainability. The foundation does not support discriminatory practices or funding for general operating costs, capital campaigns, or for-profit organizations. Collaboration with other organizations is encouraged to enhance community impact.

HCF Grants

The foundation is fortunate to partner with the many nonprofits who are working every day to make our community a better place for all who call Hastings their home. 

Grants are given to organizations and projects that address some of the area’s most pressing issues and opportunities. Since its beginning in 1987, the Hastings Community Foundation has distributed more than $15.5 million dollars in the form of grants and scholarships. Grants are given to organizations and programs that respond to the region’s most pressing issues and opportunities.

Hastings Community Foundation: General Grant

• May request up to $10,000. Most grant awards are less than $5,000.
• Applications due in December. Award determinations are made in January.

Project G.I.F.T. (Grants Invested in the Future of Troy) offers funding up to $5,000 annually for programs that address community needs. Nonprofits and student organizations are eligible to apply for grants, with a maximum of $500 available per organization. The initiative is part of the Teen Leadership Troy program, encouraging teens to engage in the grant selection process and celebrate award recipients at a ceremony hosted by The Troy Foundation.

The Warren Sixth Ward Neighborhood Impact Fund Grant aims to support nonprofits and fiscally-sponsored organizations that address community needs in Warren's Sixth Ward. Funded through the American Rescue Plan, this grant prioritizes programs and projects over capital requests. Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply promptly as funding is limited, ensuring an equitable distribution process through the Community Foundation of Mahoning Valley.

The Herbert Bearman Foundation Grant supports initiatives that enhance the well-being of individuals and communities in Baltimore, Maryland, Palm Beach County, Florida, and Israel. The biannual grant cycle requires a Letter of Inquiry by December 15 for spring funding and June 15 for fall funding. While the foundation prefers project-specific funding, it may consider grants for general operating support under certain conditions. Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations.

The Hardenbergh Foundation, established in 1950, supports charitable organizations in the East Metro, Ramsey, and Washington Counties, and the St. Croix River Valley. The Foundation offers approximately 100 grants annually, primarily for general operating support, ranging from $10,000 to $25,000. Additionally, it awards capital grants between $50,000 and $250,000 to eligible applicants, emphasizing the importance of IRS 501(c)(3) status and financial documentation in the application process.

The Triple Crown Initiative by Brandito aims to support local non-profits in Richmond and surrounding areas through significant grants and promotional merchandise. With awards of up to $15,000 and additional merchandise credits, this initiative empowers organizations aligned with Brandito's mission. Eligible applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) entities that demonstrate a commitment to community service. This initiative reflects Brandito's dedication to quality, innovation, and social responsibility, fostering positive change in the communities they serve.
