With a mission to support diverse nonprofits in the U.S., the Foundation allocates approximately 15% of its total funding to social services, prioritizing scalable programs that serve significant populations. The minimum grant size is $100,000, and special consideration is given to organizations addressing affordable housing, domestic violence, and youth development.

Organizations supporting education, child health, or family economic stability for urban low-income youth can apply for Michael & Susan Dell Foundation grants of more than US $50,000 for project support or scaling. Fire departments and related agencies in South Carolina that run youth safety, health, or education programs may be eligible if they meet these criteria.

South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association Grant

Foundation grants are awarded to assist individuals who experience tragedy or hardship due to circumstances beyond their control and demonstrate a financial or otherwise immediate need. The grants are available for those who experience natural disasters, home fires, medical emergency, act of terrorism or otherwise personal tragedy. Submit an application, letter from local Fire Chief and statistical information to the Association’s office in Columbia.

How much are grants? 

An individual may receive more than one grant. Each grant request will be evaluated separately. The Foundation will determine whether to award multiple grants based on all relevant factors, including the individual’s need and particular circumstances, the total amount of funds that the Foundation has available for grants, and the amount and needs of other applicants. The grant recipient may receive a minimum of $250 and maximum of $1,500 per grant awarded. 

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in South Carolina working on community development, basic needs, workforce education, or related initiatives can seek sponsorship support to strengthen local communities. Bank of America Charitable Foundation also considers arts, environmental, sports, and diversity programs, so fire departments with qualifying community or safety programming may be eligible.

Fire departments and related 501(c)(3) organizations in South Carolina working in preservation, education, or wellness may be eligible for the Jesse W Couch Charitable Foundation’s Storytelling Grant, with awards of more than US $50,000 to share their impact. Funding supports creating storytelling projects that highlight meaningful community change within the foundation’s three program pillars.

Public bodies, community-based nonprofits, and Federally Recognized Tribes in rural South Carolina can apply for USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities funding to build, purchase, or improve essential community facilities and equipment. Nonprofit organizations in South Carolina can seek US $1,000 - US $20,000 to support community programs such as museums, cultural and performing arts, schools and hospitals, youth and senior services, disability programs, and environmental or wildlife activities. The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation provides two annual funding rounds for IRS-qualified U.S. nonprofits, which may include fire service-related community initiatives.

The Fitness in Action Awards are presented to fire departments –career, volunteer, and combination – that have made significant contributions in improving the wellbeing of its members. The criteria are multidimensional and include components such as safety, physical fitness, nutrition, and behavioral health. The award recognizes departments that have successfully implemented programs that promote the overall health of their firefighters.Nominee Criteria

Health and Wellness is a broad and multidimensional concept that includes many components such as: Safety, Medical, Physical Fitness, Nutrition, and Behavioral Health. For example, an individual can be very physically fit, but may be struggling with depression or be experiencing other stressors. While your program may not include all components listed above, if you can demonstrate an interactive process where your program promotes medical screenings, physical fitness, good nutrition, and/or addresses such issues as emotional health, suicide prevention, substance abuse, etc. and you have a success story of how this/these programs enhanced an individual(s) or your overall department, then we want to hear from you.

Hall of Fame Award

Hall of Fame Awards are the induction of an individual to the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Hall of Fame. Criteria for the award is intentionally broad; the nominee’s contributions to the fire service must go beyond their local fire department and leave a mark on the fire service as a whole.  

There is no limit to the number of individuals who can be inducted in one year, but the individuals inducted are expected to be of the highest quality and clearly worthy of recognition at the state level.

James B. Murphy Firefighter of the Year

The Firefighter of the Year award is an annual award bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the characteristics of a firefighter with an outstanding record of fire service achievements. Firefighter characteristics are not restricted to heroic action but encompass all aspects of a productive, dedicated and professional service at all levels. 

If heroic action is one of the reasons that the individual is being nominated, the Subcommittee on Awards for the Executive Committee must find no hard evidence that the individual was in violation of generally accepted safety standards at the time of the action. Such standards include, but are not limited to, abstinence from the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of applicable protective equipment such as protective clothing and breathing apparatus, and adherence to accepted operating procedures, where these criteria were applicable at the time of the action.

The Meritorious Award, presented by the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, honors firefighters or fire departments that exceed normal duties to save lives. Nominations must come from Association members, approved by a fire chief or designee. Candidates are recognized for their vigilance and professionalism, while any safety standards violations disqualify nominations. This award reflects our commitment to recognizing extraordinary bravery within the fire service community.

One of the most prestigious awards offered by the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, recipients of this award are exemplary role models to organizations and individuals in and beyond their community. The award was established to recognize members of the fire service who have demonstrated and exhibited a true commitment to the fire service in South Carolina through their leadership and advocacy. The recipients of this most prestigious award have demonstrated, through their actions, the qualities and characteristics as Advocate, Leader, Visionary, Mentor, and Teacher. They must have been leaders in local, county, state and national organizations; developed and facilitated changes in policy, standards, guidelines and curriculum; and promoted Public Safety through persistence and innovation for the betterment of all. 

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual who is an outstanding member of his or her community and Fire Department. A successful candidate must possess many years of experience serving his or her community and Fire Department by taking initiative and leading by example. This individual, volunteers with various community organizations, charitable organizations, local government and hospitals, as well as other organizations. In addition to being a supportive volunteer within the community, the award-winning nominee must be active in his or her local Fire Department.

South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association: Media Award

Presented to an individual or organization, the Media Award recognizes outstanding positive media promotion of the South Carolina fire service. Nominations must include an article, video, sound bite, poster, or any other form of media used to inform the public and include a measurable result as a result of the aforementioned news coverage. The award recognizes exceptional coverage of the fire service and is not presented yearly but on nominations of merit.

The Association’s award for Media shall be presented to a public media (television, radio, newspaper, magazine, website) for outstanding promotion of the Fire Service by presenting the Fire Service (Department) in a positive manner. The action taken by the media should positively impact both the local Fire Department and/or fire service and the public. Can be for an individual or media entity.

Nominee Criteria

All nominations must include an article, video, soundtrack, poster or any other media used to inform the public. There should be a measurable result from the actions taken by the media, such as, documented positive public opinion, reduction in fires, improved services, etc. This award is not intended for normal media coverage, but for exceptional coverage of the fire service in South Carolina.

South Carolina first responders and their dependents seeking academic scholarships can access funding through the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina, with awards of US $1,000. Eligible applicants must be current, retired, or fallen fire, police, or EMS personnel, or their dependents, connected to units based in and serving Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties.

Chief Jim Stone Scholarship

Chief James Casper Stone Jr., a 50-year veteran, joined the Darlington Fire Department in 1962. In 1984, he was promoted as the City of Darlington's first full-time Fire Chief fulfilling and living his dream every day until his retirement in 2012. Chief Stone led his department with dedication, determination, drive, and a kind spirit that reached deep into his community. He was instrumental in preserving the town’s first horse-drawn fire engine for perpetual display the community continues to enjoy. In addition to his tenure with the fire service, Stone was an active, lifetime member of his church, and served on numerous community boards including Darlington County Council.

The Stone family has established an annual scholarship in remembrance of Chief Jim Stone's dedication and passion for the citizens of the City of Darlington, Darlington County, and South Carolina’s Fire Service.  

Applicants must complete the application, offer a letter of support from the applicant’s Fire Chief, and provide a general reference letter of support from a person of the applicant’s choosing.

Chief Louis Behrens Scholarship

Co-founder of the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, Chief Louis Behrens was fire chief in the City of Charleston for 25 years and was a faithful member of his department for a total of 58 years. Chief Behrens was the creative visionary and served as the Association’s first and longest serving President. Chief Behrens worked to promote and led the South Carolina Firefighters’ Association for 27 years and was instrumental in the passing of the Fireman’s Fund Bill, known today as the One Percent Fund.

The Foundation has established an annual scholarship to honor the dedication and love that Chief Louis Behrens gave to the citizens of the state of South Carolina and South Carolina’s fire service.

Lieutenant Taylor A. Graham Memorial Scholarship

Lieutenant Graham served in the fire service for more than 30 years, dedicating his career to protecting citizens across Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. He proudly served 22 years with the City of Greer Fire Department as a Lieutenant and was also a member of the Greenville County Emergency Response Team (ERT). Beyond his years of service, Lieutenant Graham was deeply passionate about mentoring and teaching future firefighters. As an instructor at the fire academy, he took great pride in helping develop the next generation of fire service professionals and was honored to share his knowledge and experience with others entering the profession.

The Graham family has established an annual scholarship in remembrance of Lieutenant Taylor A Graham’s dedication and passion for the citizens of Greenville and Spartanburg Counties, and South Carolina’s fire service.

Applicants must complete the application, offer a letter of support from the applicant’s Fire Chief, and provide a general reference letter of support from a person of the applicant’s choosing. 

South Carolina fire departments and related public safety nonprofits can access funding through Chick Fil A Foundation to support youth-focused community, housing, food security, or environmental stewardship initiatives; awards range from US $30,000 - US $350,000. Eligible applicants are U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations or equivalent charities in Canada, the United Kingdom, or Singapore.

Nonprofit organizations in South Carolina with strong, replicable community partnerships can apply for Mutual of America Foundation’s national Community Partnership Award, which honors collaborations addressing significant social issues. Fire departments and related public safety nonprofits may be eligible if they lead cross-sector partnerships that measurably improve lives and model effective community collaboration.
