Older Americans Act Support and Health Services Grant

Through the Older Americans Act Support and Health Services Grant, the City of Boston’s Age Strong Commission seeks to fund programs that are providing a comprehensive and supportive social service system while promoting longevity and an optimal quality of life for older adults. The goal of this grant program is to leverage existing community trust and foster a sense of community within each neighborhood. Grants will be made to ensure high-quality social programs are accessible to older adults.

Grant Priorities

• Support older adult programming in the community at non-profits through cost reimbursement funding
• Help older adults maintain independent living in their communities as long as desired through supportive and/or evidence-based programming

The Older Americans Act Support and Health Services Grant is based on Title III-B and Title III-D funding.

Title III-B

With Title III-B grants, we aim to fund multiple agencies throughout Boston to provide supportive services to older adults. The programming may include services, such as: legal assistance, friendly visit, home repair, recreation, computer training, and translation/interpretation services. For a complete listing of allowable services, please visit OAAPS Service Categories. Title III-B allowable services will have a corresponding “B” in column F.

• As mandated by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA), twenty-two percent (22%) of the total Title III-B Support Services must be allocated to legal services programming in the City of Boston.

The Tommy Wilson Memorial Grant, established by Dr. George T. Wilson and his wife Irene, honors their son Tommy, who had cerebral palsy. This grant supports recreational programs for individuals with disabilities and aims to positively impact their lives. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations with a successful history of programming for individuals with disabilities. The grant prioritizes programs serving economically disadvantaged individuals and may only fund applicants once every five years.

The Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship is awarded annually by SHAPE America to honor outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in health and physical education. Established in 1995, this scholarship supports three undergraduate and two graduate recipients. Candidates must be SHAPE America members, majoring in relevant fields, and demonstrate academic excellence and leadership. In addition to financial support, recipients receive a three-year membership to SHAPE America, fostering a commitment to health education and physical activity.

The Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship, established by SHAPE America, honors outstanding graduate students in health and physical education. Awarded annually since 1995, it recognizes two graduate recipients based on academic excellence and leadership. Along with financial support, winners receive a three-year SHAPE America membership, enhancing their professional network. This scholarship underscores the organization's commitment to advancing health education and supporting future leaders in the field.

The Beveridge Family Foundation Grant supports initiatives in youth development, health, education, religion, art, and the environment, primarily in Hampden and Hampshire counties, Massachusetts. With two funding cycles each year, applications are due by February 1 and August 1. The Foundation prioritizes organizations that enhance the quality of life and promote self-sufficiency among underserved populations, although it avoids supporting certain areas such as international affairs and awards.

The Community Grant: Operating Support Grant by the Greater Worcester Community Foundation aims to enhance the vibrancy of Worcester County by funding organizations aligned with focus areas such as Health & Wellbeing, Arts & Creativity, Youth & Families, and Basic Needs. This initiative encourages nonprofits to adopt equitable practices and engage community voices, while offering flexible funding options based on organizational budgets. The grant seeks transformative partnerships that address systemic barriers and foster community-driven solutions.

The Schwartz Charitable Foundation provides financial support to non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations in Worcester County and nearby areas. With average grants between $2,500 and $5,000, the Foundation focuses on various sectors including culture, education, healthcare, social services, and disaster relief. The aim is to assist deserving organizations in making a positive impact within their communities, ensuring continued support for vital local initiatives.

The Mission Hill/Fenway Neighborhood Trust Grant supports community-based organizations in the Mission Hill and Fenway areas. It provides funding for projects that enhance the quality of life, focusing on arts, education, youth sports, senior activities, community gardens, affordable housing, and social services. Eligible applicants include non-profits and civic groups dedicated to these initiatives, fostering community development and engagement.

The Rebecca Pomroy Foundation provides annual grants to support charitable organizations that align with its mission to enhance community health, education, and recreation. With a focus on aiding girls, young women, and local community centers in Newton, Massachusetts, the Foundation welcomes applications for capital grants, operating support, and special projects. The Ogden Codman Trust Grant provides crucial financial support to organizations serving residents of Lincoln, Massachusetts. The Fund for Williamstown Grant, offered by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, provides vital support for nonprofits aiding residents in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
