The Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization that connects people, passion and resources. With our partners, the Community Foundation uses the tools of philanthropy to find solutions to pressing issues. We provide grants to support the work of nonprofits, scholarships to local students and other forms of support to communities working to eliminate barriers to opportunity, prosperity and belonging.

Scholarships

Each year Grand Rapids Community Foundation supports hundreds of students on their college or career training journeys. We are excited to remove barriers to academic success so that students like you can pursue what you're passionate about.

Harry J. Morris, Jr. Emergency Services

Open to students who are residents of Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, or Ottawa County attending a college in the state of Michigan studying Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, or Firefighter with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

The North Central Branch John Henry Comstock Award recognizes one graduate student from each of the Entomological Society of America's six branches. This award promotes graduate-level entomology and encourages attendance at the ESA Annual Meeting. Benefits include an all-expense-paid trip to the national meeting, a $500 cash prize, and a certificate presented during the meeting. Eligibility includes current enrollment in a graduate entomology program or recent graduation.

NCRC Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) - Housing Counseling Services

The Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) empowers NCRC network members to level up established service lines.

The Housing Counseling Services series within FEF supports HUD-approved housing counseling agencies in driving homeownership, such as through pre-purchase counseling. In addition, the program builds agency knowledge on heirs’ property challenges to better equip first-time and low-income homebuying households with the know-how to retain intergenerational wealth.

In doing so, FEF-HCS aims to help underserved families begin their homeownership journey, with an additional goal of ensuring foresight into the long-term future of their home purchase.

The FEF-HCS series is funded in partnership with Key Bank and HSBC, and targets communities within the Key Bank and HSBC branch footprints.

Through these partnerships, $2.5 million in Key Bank geographies and $1.5 million in HSBC geographies has been allocated for the subgrants for direct-to-client housing counseling services that will be awarded in three rounds in the FEF-HCS track.

Funding Support

Awardee agencies will receive subgrants to support their housing counseling services to clients.

Knowledge Building

Awardee agencies will attend a training session on heirs’ property challenges and best practices, hosted by NCRC National Training Academy. Bolstering counselor knowledge on this topic will ensure that your agency is not only serving clients in their personal wealth-building journey now, but also helping them preserve that wealth in generations to come.

The Kailey Elizabeth Jordan Memorial Fund honors a vibrant young life lost too soon. Established to support accredited Michigan horse camps, it provides therapeutic horseback riding opportunities for disabled or terminally ill children aged 16 and under. This initiative not only celebrates Kailey's passions but also aims to enrich the lives of children facing challenges, fostering joy and healing through the bond with horses.

The Worthington Family Foundation Grant Program supports nonprofit organizations dedicated to the arts and environmental initiatives benefiting children and young adults. Established in honor of Betty J. O'Leary, this foundation aims to carry on her legacy of intellectual curiosity and community service. Through its annual funding, it seeks to empower organizations that foster creativity and environmental stewardship, ensuring a positive impact on future generations.

The Michigan Justice Fund Rapid Response Grant Program aims to support Michigan-based advocacy and service organizations with urgent funding needs. Grants between $1,500 and $10,000 are available for time-sensitive projects that enhance justice reform efforts. There is no application deadline, and decisions are made within 30 days. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits in good standing, or fiscally sponsored organizations, located in Michigan.

The Coaching Enhancement Grant by the NCAA Division III aims to increase diversity in assistant coaching roles by providing financial support to member institutions. Over two years, selected schools receive $15,000 to cover salaries, requiring a matching contribution. This initiative encourages ethnic minority and gender representation, allowing up to 11 institutions to benefit annually, thus enhancing inclusivity in collegiate sports.

The Mackenzie L. Watts Memorial Fund, established by the Shiawassee Community Foundation, honors the legacy of a young athlete who tragically passed away in 2005. This fund focuses on enhancing heart health and emergency preparedness in Michigan. By providing essential cardiac-related equipment and programs to nonprofit organizations, it aims to improve emergency response capabilities and save lives through increased access to vital resources, ensuring that Mackenzie's spirit continues to inspire and protect her community.

The Ryan Jones Memorial Fund, managed by the Shiawassee Community Foundation, supports individuals diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This fund aims to enhance the quality of life for those affected by ALS by providing financial assistance for comfort and daily living needs. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity committed to enriching lives in the Shiawassee County region through responsible stewardship of charitable funds, ensuring all donations are tax-deductible.

The Auto Club Group Foundation focuses on creating a positive impact through grants that enhance traffic safety, driver education, and financial literacy across 14 U.S. states and two territories. With a mission rooted in community service, the foundation supports nonprofit organizations and government entities that align with its goals. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, addressing crucial areas such as traffic safety initiatives, financial literacy for K-12 students, and equitable access to driver education programs.

Entergy’s Open Grants Program aims to enhance community well-being through funding initiatives in arts, education, social services, and community improvement. The program prioritizes support for organizations that serve diverse populations, including children and low-income communities. Eligible entities must have 501(c)(3) status or equivalent nonprofit recognition. Applications should be submitted three months in advance, allowing ample time for review. Entergy focuses on projects that foster self-sufficiency and enrich local neighborhoods.

The MI Wildlife Habitat Grant Program aims to enhance wildlife habitats in Michigan, focusing on grasslands and savannas of at least 100 acres. This initiative supports sustainable wildlife populations as outlined in the Wildlife Division's strategic plan. The program prioritizes projects that improve habitat quality and quantity, aligning with GPS Goal 2 to adapt to environmental changes. Funding is provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural resources.

The MI Snowmobile Trail Improvement Program, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, supports the maintenance and enhancement of the state's snowmobile trail system. Eligible applicants include local governments and nonprofit snowmobile organizations. Grants cover seasonal grooming, special maintenance projects, and equipment replacement, ensuring trails remain safe and accessible for users. Applications are accepted year-round, with funding awarded for a full fiscal year.

Craig L. Rasmussen Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Jack L. and Shirley Rasmussen, who established the Craig L. Rasmussen Memorial Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Mason County in memory of their son, Craig.

The Asian Cultural Council's Individual Fellowship provides artists, scholars, and arts professionals from Asia and the United States with opportunities for self-directed cultural exchange and research in unfamiliar regions. This program supports activities such as interviews, workshops, and archival research, fostering cultural immersion and collaboration. With a funding limit of $35,000, the fellowship encourages innovative proposals that enhance creative perspectives and relationships among peers, while also ensuring strong eligibility criteria for applicants.

The Growing Tribal Economies Through Forest Market Innovations grant program, initiated by First Nations Development Institute, aims to empower Tribes and Alaska Native Villages to engage in emerging markets that enhance forest health and resilience. With funding of $200,000 to $500,000 per grant, this initiative supports projects focusing on sustainability, innovation, and traditional knowledge. Eligible applicants are encouraged to develop forest products, certifications, and practices that contribute positively to biodiversity and ecosystem management.

The Strategic Alliance Matching Grant - Division II offers financial support to enhance ethnic minority and gender representation in mid- to senior-level athletics administration roles across NCAA Division II institutions. With an annual budget of $860,000, the grant aims to fund up to 20 schools and conferences each year. Eligible applicants must be active Division II members and are encouraged to collaborate with their human resources departments during the proposal process, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.

The Waste Management Charitable Contributions Program supports initiatives that enhance environmental stewardship, sustainability education, and community vitality. With a commitment to civic pride and economic development, the program prioritizes organizations that address local needs and promote sustainable practices. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations that focus on public purposes, while ineligible requests include funding for operating costs and individual fundraising events. This initiative fosters a collaborative approach to community betterment.

The Coaching Enhancement Grant - Division II aims to enhance diversity in NCAA coaching by providing financial support for new assistant coaching positions. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative offers up to $1,000,000 for the acquisition of private forest land in the Lake Superior Basin. Eligible applicants include federally recognized tribes, local governments, and nonprofits. Projects must focus on forested properties over five acres, addressing threats of conversion to non-forest uses while enhancing community benefits. This initiative supports children's hospitals and nonprofits by funding equipment, staffing, and connectivity, ensuring children can enjoy gaming at their bedside. With grants ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, the program focuses on offering joy and distraction, helping young patients cope with their hospital stays while facilitating connections with peers.

The Kroger Foundation is dedicated to uplifting communities through significant charitable contributions, having donated over $1.9 billion in the past six years. Their focus on combating hunger through the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative exemplifies their commitment to social impact.
