Best School Health Grants in North Carolina

The CSS James A. Swenberg Carcinogenesis Merit Award recognizes junior faculty who contribute to transformative carcinogenesis research. Funded by the Society of Toxicology, the award includes a $1,000 cash prize, a recognition plaque, and an opportunity to present at the SOT Annual Meeting. Eligible candidates must be section members, hold relevant academic appointments, and be within 15 years of their highest degree. This award honors Professor Swenberg's legacy in advancing toxicology and cancer research.

The Ono Initiative Grant by the Ono Pharma Foundation supports innovative research in Chemical Biology, aiming to transform human health. It welcomes proposals from Principal Investigators (PIs) at nominated institutions, focusing on groundbreaking solutions and promoting the development of young scientists. Grants of up to $1,035,000 over three years are available, fostering collaboration and transformative research aligned with the foundation's mission.

Purpose

The purpose of the Early Childhood Education and Development Fund is to ensure that every child in Buncombe County has an equal opportunity to thrive during their first 2,000 days, including access to quality early childhood education. The Fund was established in response to a well-documented local shortage of quality early childhood education programs, barriers that families face in accessing existing programs, including affordability, and a well-documented shortage of qualified teachers and staff in classrooms and centers.

Funding

Grants may be awarded up to the total amount of $4,054,185, the anticipated budget for the Early Childhood Education and Development Fund for FY2027 (subject to budget adoption). On October 30, 2018, the Board of Commissioners for Buncombe County voted to create the Early Childhood Education and Development fund for the purpose of annually investing $3.6 million beginning in the FY2020 budget with an annual increase of 2% in future years. 

Funding is earmarked to support early care and education for children birth through kindergarten. This includes the following categories:

• infants/toddlers – ages six (6) weeks to three (3) years old
• preschoolers – ages three (3) to five (5) years old
• pre-kindergarteners (pre-k) – 4 year old rising kindergarteners (4 years old by August 31st)

The Bob and Nancy Levin Scholarship Endowment, administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation, supports Montgomery County public high school graduates pursuing higher education. Candidates must exhibit a strong interest in the liberal arts and maintain a minimum GPA equivalent to a B average. Selection criteria include financial need, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and community service, with preference given to students interested in writing, journalism, or English. This scholarship aims to foster academic achievement and community engagement.

The David and Kathy Triplett Scholarship Endowment, administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation, supports graduating high school seniors from Watauga County, including those from esteemed institutions like the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Eligible candidates must enroll full-time at a four-year college, showcasing excellence in academics, physical activity, and leadership within their communities. This scholarship aims to empower local students to pursue higher education and contribute positively to society.

The Everett-Chia Li-Wilkerson Scholarship, administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation, supports Pitt County high school graduates attending East Carolina University. This scholarship aims to facilitate higher education for eligible students, promoting educational access and equity. The Foundation, established in 1988, focuses on enhancing community resources and addressing local needs through philanthropy, ensuring a lasting impact across North Carolina.

The George and Bonnie Siek Memorial Scholarship Endowment, managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation, supports graduates from Macon County high schools, particularly from the Town of Highlands, who wish to pursue higher education. Selection criteria include academic performance and extracurricular activities, with a focus on students studying English, Linguistics, or Education. This scholarship may be renewed for up to four years for undergraduates maintaining a 2.8 GPA, honoring the Sieks' commitment to education and community enrichment.

The Gene L. Reese Scholarship Endowment, established to honor Dr. Gene L. Reese, provides financial assistance to students pursuing dental auxiliary careers in the High Country community. With a focus on high school students and graduates from Tarheel Study Club counties, the scholarship aims to address the growing need for skilled dental professionals. Since its inception, it has awarded nearly $17,000 to help deserving students achieve their educational goals, contributing to the future of dental care in the region.

Geraldine Mayo Beveridge Scholarship Endowment

About Geraldine Mayo Beveridge

Geraldine “Gerry” Mayo Beveridge taught school in Carteret County for 40 years. She was a Home Economics teacher and thought of her students as her children; she and husband “Captain David” had none of their own. Gerry would discreetly provide classroom supplies and clothing items for students in need. She quietly contributed money toward college for capable students who couldn’t afford it.

Gerry’s concern for students continued after retirement. As a member of the Carteret County Retired School Personnel (CCRSP), Gerry convinced members of the importance of awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior in each high school – East Carteret, West Carteret, and later, Croatan. To raise money, she organized bake sales and brought plants and canned foods to sell to members. The scholarships, though small, were a great effort for members and were greatly appreciated by recipients.

Gerry left a considerable sum of money to CCRSP with the expectation that it be managed well and used for scholarships. Today, the Geraldine Mayo Beveridge Scholarship is awarded to qualifying graduating seniors who want to teach Vocational Education, now called Career and Technical Education.

Gerry’s passion for her students and her love of education continues through this scholarship. She was an amazing educator whose philanthropy will last in perpetuity.

The Women for Women of Pitt County initiative, supported by the North Carolina Community Foundation, aims to empower women and girls in Pitt County through various programs. The CASL Scholarship Fund in Memory of Lane Meyer, managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation, awards scholarships to high school seniors actively participating in the Capital Area Soccer League at the Challenge Level or above. Applicants are evaluated on their academic excellence, soccer skills, sportsmanship, and community involvement, reflecting the values exemplified by Lane Meyer. This initiative not only honors Lane's legacy but also fosters leadership and teamwork among young athletes across North Carolina.

The Bertie-Hertford Women's Fund Grant, operated by the North Carolina Community Foundation, empowers local organizations supporting women, children, and families in Bertie and Hertford counties. Moore Women – A Giving Circle, part of the North Carolina Community Foundation, empowers women through collective philanthropy.
