NY PLAYS: Places for Learning, Activity, and Youth Socialization

Recognizing that Playgrounds promote physical activity, exercise, and building friendships – and that research shows outdoor play supports emotional well-being – Governor Hochul announced the New York Places for Learning, Activity, and Youth Socialization (NY PLAYS) Initiative. This new competitive grant program will support the design, construction, and renovation of Playgrounds that are open to the public in Communities across the State.

NY PLAYS is overseen by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (“NYS OPRHP”) and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (“DASNY”). 

BlueCross Healthy Places aims to enhance community health by creating accessible spaces for physical activity. This initiative focuses on developing features like community gathering spots, fitness areas, and playgrounds tailored to local needs. The program encourages collaboration with both government and non-profit organizations to ensure projects are community-driven and inclusive. By prioritizing public access and community input, BlueCross Healthy Places seeks to foster healthier lifestyles and stronger community bonds.

The TSET Built Environment Grants, initiated by the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, aim to enhance public health in Oklahoma by funding projects that promote physical activity and nutrition. With a total funding of $4.6 million, eligible organizations can apply for grants to improve community infrastructure, including parks, fitness centers, and access to healthy food. This initiative focuses on reducing preventable deaths related to tobacco use and obesity, thereby improving overall health outcomes for Oklahomans.

Grants can fund up to 50% of a project's costs, with a maximum of $20,000 per property. Eligible projects focus on nature-based outdoor recreation and must meet specific requirements, ensuring long-lasting improvements. Applicants are encouraged to engage with the DNR early in their planning process to ensure compliance and project success.

The KaBOOM! Adventure Courses Grant Program offers funding to create engaging playspaces for older children and teens. This initiative encourages community involvement through a collaborative design and build process, aiming to address the need for physical activity in low-income areas. Eligible applicants include organizations that serve youth and can demonstrate community support. Grants are available on a rolling basis, with a focus on priority cities impacted by recent events, including rural Colorado and Hurricane Harvey-affected Texas communities.
