Health Education Scholarships

One of the many keys to maintaining a healthy, prosperous community is ensuring a sustainable supply of excellent health care providers. To achieve this, Samaritan Health Services offers numerous scholarships to local students pursuing careers as doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well continuing education or specialty training for current medical providers.

Each year, Samaritan awards more than $25,000 in scholarships for health care education to ensure the communities we serve receive the best care possible well into the future.

John & Carol Dinges Medical Scholarship

The John and Carol Dinges Medical Scholarship is intended to provide financial support for the education of an individual who desires to enter a medical field for the first time. The funds will be sent directly to the college for the student’s tuition. 

The scholarship is to be used for one of the following programs of study, which are listed in order of preference:

4. Pharmacy Tech

The Gray Family Foundation offers Environmental Education Grants aimed at enhancing K-12 environmental education through outdoor experiences. In 2025, the foundation will maintain a budget of $705,000 to support programs that engage youth with both natural and built environments. Applications can be submitted after an initial conversation with the Senior Program Officer, starting January 16, 2026, and will be reviewed biannually. This initiative fosters vital connections between youth and nature.

State Library of Oregon

Provides specialized information services to state government employees and the public and maintains several collections including Federal and Oregon documents.

LSTA Grants: Strong Libraries Mini Grant

The State Library is offering small grants to strengthen libraries in Oregon and enable them to more fully support their communities. Projects must address one or more of the following focal areas:

Collections: Make Reading Relevant to Your Community

• Enhance a nonfiction collection with recent titles or a specialty section (ex: travel).
• Engage reluctant readers with manga and/or graphic novels.
• Acquire books by Oregon authors and/or Tribal Nations.
• Purchase Spanish-language or bilingual materials.
• Complete incomplete series or add additional copies of popular titles.

Community: Get Involved in Your Local Area

• Bring services out of the building and into the community (ex: pop-up library, lending collection in laundromat, booth at farmers’ market).
• Perform outreach to communities that are underserved.
• Collaborate with local organizations to host public events or classes on topics of interest to the community (ex: civics workshops, language learning, seed exchange).
• Host or participate in a cultural festival.

Economy: Help Foster a Prosperous Community

• Collaborate with local organizations (such as WorkSource, OSU Extension Service, small businesses, community financial or entrepreneur groups, or chambers of commerce) to host public programs or training.
• Curate a set of resources that support Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at local high schools or community colleges.
• Host and/or participate in a local job fair.
• Add products to a makerspace that support local business needs.
• Establish a work area for job seekers, remote workers, and/or small business owners.

Staff: Encourage Growth and Engagement

• Organize a learning opportunity for staff.
• Coordinate staff visits to other area libraries and/or community organizations.
• Conduct a workforce analysis and create a plan for implementing improvements.
• Bring in a facilitator to host activities that build staff morale.
• Pilot a mentoring or peer-to-peer training program.

Technology: Support Digital Access and Skills Training

• Lend devices to eliminate barriers to technology.
• Update public and/or staff computer workstations.
• Acquire assistive technology that enhances access for individuals with disabilities.
• Collaborate with a local organization to host computer skills training workshops.

There can only be one application per organization (meaning, one application per public school district, per university or college, per public library, etc.).

Spending must adhere to Allowable Costs.

Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliance is required for public libraries and K-12 school libraries using funds for devices that access the Internet and/or for costs associated with accessing the Internet.

Entities may include indirect costs in the budget, as outlined in 2 CFR 200.414.

The Oregon Nita M. Lowey 21st CCLC Grant supports 21st Century Community Learning Centers, aiming to enrich academic and developmental opportunities for students in high-poverty schools. Funded by federal Title IV-B grants, the program emphasizes mental health, K-5 literacy, and career education. With an anticipated funding of $10 million annually, grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 will be awarded to eligible applicants, enabling critical support for students and their families over a five-year period.

The Jackson Foundation, established by Maria C. Jackson, provides funding for charitable, educational, and welfare-related projects primarily within Oregon. Governed by trustees, it aims to enhance public welfare in Portland and statewide. The Foundation does not support individual grants or private businesses and typically limits funding to one grant per organization annually. It considers projects of broader appeal outside the Portland area, ensuring that its contributions effectively promote community welfare.

The Pence Contractors Diversity in Leadership Scholarship supports underrepresented students in Oregon pursuing construction engineering. Preference is given to residents of Multnomah County, aiming to foster diversity in the field. This scholarship encourages students to achieve their educational goals and prepare for careers in construction, contributing to a more inclusive workforce. It is a valuable opportunity for aspiring engineers to gain financial assistance and promote equity in the industry.

The WGPF: Legends & Lore Marker Grant Program celebrates and promotes local folklore, legends, and folklife as vital aspects of cultural heritage. Targeted at 501(c)(3) organizations and government entities across 14 US states, it aims to enhance cultural tourism by commemorating community stories. Successful applications typically focus on folktales, historical legends, and community traditions, while excluding purely literary works or personal folklore that lacks broader community significance.

The Social Justice Fund NW offers sponsorships to grassroots organizations in ID, MT, OR, WA, and WY, encouraging innovative projects often overlooked by traditional funders. Applicants must comply with specific requirements, including being within the designated region and ensuring events are accessible to the public. This initiative supports community-led efforts, particularly those led by Black, Indigenous, and people of color, fostering connections and amplifying collective action through diverse events.

The Well Abandonment, Repair, and Replacement Fund Grant, offered by the Oregon Water Resources Department, provides financial assistance to low- and moderate-income homeowners facing well supply issues. This grant helps cover costs associated with repairing or replacing dry wells or those damaged by wildfire, ensuring access to safe drinking water for essential household needs. Eligible applicants include homeowners and members of federally recognized tribes in Oregon.

Our scholarships support a wide variety of majors, interests and passions. We have scholarships for graduates of specific high schools, current college students and graduate students. Other scholarships support students returning to their educations after time away, for workforce retraining or career advancement.

Embark’s Diversity in Leadership Scholarship

For underrepresented and diverse Oregon residents pursuing their first year of enrollment at an institution of higher education in Oregon. 

Award Information

• Award amount of $10,000 for freshman year; $5,000 for following three years (or until completion of degree)
• Renewable for up to four (years if enrolled full-time)
• Recipient may defer award for up to one year
• If recipient is interested in a career in public policy, public finance or a related field, an interview for the Straub Fellowship will be offered during the junior and senior years.
