Request for Proposals: Launchpad Funds

Background

Coefficient Giving is increasing its giving, primarily to prepare for the billions of dollars in new philanthropic capital that may become available in the coming years. Our increased giving in global health and wellbeing is a temporary surge, with two objectives: to smooth funding and pull forward initiatives we expect to be cost-effective, and to help create an ecosystem of regrantors and implementers with the capacity to allocate this new money as cost-effectively as possible. Additional context on our scaling is provided in this blog post. 

With new potential capital on the way, we want to increase the supply of actionable and fundable plans to address some of the world’s hardest problems. We’re looking for specific, credible strategies to convert funding into measurable progress. Our ideal funds are:

However, we are also open to funds that are thematic and don’t have a quantified goal — for example, a fund organized around a promising type of intervention. Such funds still need to be led by a single, identifiable person who is accountable for the fund’s direction.

Through this request for EOIs, we aim to seed or scale Launchpad Funds that can grow to $100m+ over the next few years. We don’t seek scale for its own sake; it is a proxy for the ambition of the fund, and a signal that the problem is large and tractable enough to justify deploying significantly more capital over time.

What we will fund

• We expect to support established ideas that have either not yet secured anchor support or could significantly scale beyond their existing level of funding.
• This funding can cover operating expenses, but we expect most of it to be used for activities that make progress on the fund’s goals — whether through regranting or direct implementation.
• For exceptional proposals, we may consider funding levels beyond $50m. We anticipate higher funding levels will involve more thought partnership from our team.
• While we don’t expect to make grants longer than 36 months, funded proposals may later be considered for additional funding beyond the initial period.

The Tribal Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program seeks applications for Development and Implementation Grants to support evidence-based home visiting programs for expectant families and young children. Funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, these grants aim to enhance maternal and child health, improve parenting practices, and foster early childhood development within tribal communities, ultimately promoting better socio-economic outcomes and reducing instances of child maltreatment.

Puerto Rico early childhood leaders piloting new ideas can access funding through Promise Venture Studio’s Imagine Award, which offers US $20,000 in flexible support plus a six-month learning cohort. Community-rooted changemakers focused on equity and early childhood development who are ready to test and refine a pilot within six months may be eligible.

Students pursuing careers in early learning can apply for Chuckanut Health Foundation’s Dr. Chao-ying & Sue Wu Early Learning Scholarship, which supports higher education in early childhood development and related fields. Puerto Rico early childhood programs may benefit when their students seek academic scholarships that advance educational access, youth services, and children’s health-focused careers.

Local and national charities serving the needs of children, including early childhood development programs in Puerto Rico, can access funding via the CAPTRUST Community Foundation. The National Partnership Grant selects one major Charity of Choice and multiple additional national partners each year for grants that expand their reach and impact.

Early childhood programs in Puerto Rico seeking bilingual school-readiness materials for ages 3–5 can access support through The Molina Foundation’s On My Way to Kindergarten Program. Grants from The Molina Foundation help nonprofits obtain free activity books and related resources that build kindergarten readiness for young children and their families.

Nonprofit organizations running early childhood development and learning programs for at-risk children ages 0–5 may be eligible for this funding, including those serving Puerto Rico. Grants from Ohio Childrens Foundation support quality early childhood education, school-readiness, literacy, and public policy advocacy, with awards up to US $20,000 for innovative pilots or proven initiatives.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations supporting early childhood development and child wellness in Puerto Rico can apply for grants up to US $15,000 to improve the lives of children. Focused on children’s health, wellness, and communities in need, 15 and the Mahomies Foundation supports programs serving young children and related family services across the U.S.

Graduate students conducting early childhood language development research at U.S. speech-language programs can receive US $4,000 to support preschool or early school-age studies. Grants from American Speech Language Hearing Foundation may benefit projects in Puerto Rico, especially those focused on early verbal children and including children with hearing impairment where applicable.

U.S. nonprofit professional development providers serving early childhood programs can seek up to US $500,000 over three years to strengthen workforce models that improve outcomes for young children from low-income families. With a mission to advance early childhood development, Stranahan Foundation supports scalable coaching, leadership development, substitute teacher pools, and reinvestment in proven PD models, including work benefiting Puerto Rico.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations improving early childhood development and family well-being in Puerto Rico may be eligible for funding to support programs and operations. Grants from O'Reilly Automotive Foundation help U.S.-based community nonprofits address early childhood development, literacy, health and social services, economic stability, workforce development, and disaster relief in communities where O’Reilly Auto Parts operates.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, churches, and government entities working on early childhood development and family support in Puerto Rico may be eligible for flexible funding, including operating, capital, or program support. With a mission to help children, families, and communities thrive, Cdv5 Foundation backs efforts that nurture successful children and healthier communities.

Puerto Rico early childhood development nonprofits and other 501(c)(3) organizations can access funding to share their impact through storytelling projects. The Jesse W Couch Charitable Foundation’s Storytelling Grant supports work within its preservation, education, or wellness pillars, including early childhood development and education initiatives, with awards of more than US $50,000.

The Global Health and Wellbeing Grantmaking program by Coefficient Giving focuses on addressing critical health and welfare issues worldwide. With an emphasis on proactive engagement and evidence-based solutions, the initiative supports projects that improve health outcomes and wellbeing. The program prioritizes funding for organizations tackling neglected global health challenges, advocating for effective philanthropy, and enhancing the lives of both humans and animals in vulnerable communities.

Puerto Rico early childhood organizations and child welfare nonprofits can access funding through the Doris Duke Foundation to support child well-being and prevention-focused services. Programs centered on early childhood development, child welfare, or preventing child abuse and neglect may be eligible under this national initiative, which emphasizes bold, community-led approaches that help families thrive and avoid system involvement.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations improving early childhood welfare, education, play, or parenting education can seek seed funding for innovative projects benefiting young children in Puerto Rico and across the U.S. Focused on early childhood development, the Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood supports research and program models with strong potential for national application.

Early childhood development nonprofits in Puerto Rico can seek funding for research and outstanding early childhood programs through the FDC Foundation, which supports work across the U.S. The foundation funds 501(c)(3) public charities focused on early childhood development within its broader health, education, and housing priorities.

Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations working on early childhood development and family well-being can apply for WK Kellogg Foundation’s open, year-round funding; awards support nurturing early care and education, maternal and child health, food and nutrition, and equitable community development. Organizations in Puerto Rico may be eligible if they meet IRS requirements and program priorities.

Alleghany Foundation provides Puerto Rico early childhood development organizations and related nonprofits with project-focused funding to strengthen services for young children. Tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations and qualifying public entities may be eligible, especially for innovative, non-recurring initiatives that enhance educational excellence, health and wellness, and community capacity while leveraging additional public or private support.

Early childhood development and family-serving 501(c)(3) organizations or public entities in Puerto Rico can seek program support that strengthens health, education, and opportunity for young children. With a mission to strengthen communities, SC Johnson Giving provides U.S.-based charities with grants for healthier outcomes, sustainable environments, and expanded economic and educational opportunity, including early childhood initiatives.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations improving educational outcomes for children and youth can apply for US $5,000 - US $75,000 from the Comis Foundation to pilot programs or build capacity. With a mission to expand opportunity, it supports early learning, K–12 education, and related child- and youth-serving initiatives, including some with national reach.

U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits and government entities running innovative early childhood education projects up to sixth grade, including in Puerto Rico, can apply for the Francis R. Dewing Foundation’s seed funding; awards $1000 to $25,000 for new, untried programs. Projects should directly benefit children and have potential for broader community impact.

Educational nonprofits and institutions working on early childhood or K-12 programs in Puerto Rico can seek more than US $100,000 to support proven education initiatives. Focus areas include early learning, higher education, scholarships, STEM pathways, and educator professional development. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation favors large, well-established 501(c)(3) organizations with strong impact and sustainability.

The Standard's Corporate Giving Program emphasizes community support and employee engagement, reflecting its foundational mission to enhance financial well-being. Established in 1906, the program focuses on Healthy Communities, Disability and Empowerment, Cultural Development, and Education. With a funding range of $500 to $25,000, it aims to make a substantial impact in the lives of individuals and families facing challenges. The Standard Charitable Foundation, launched in 2006, further extends this commitment by supporting organizations that align with its philanthropic goals.
