Best Social Science & Humanities Grants

The Mary E. Kwiatkowski Social Services Scholarship Fund, offered by the Erie Community Foundation, supports female and LGBTQIA+ students pursuing social sciences and public service careers. The grant is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and aims to enhance local cultural production and community engagement.

The NYSCA Arts Bring Change (ABC) Grants support local cultural organizations and artists who collaborate with public schools to provide K-12 students with engaging artistic experiences. Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, this program emphasizes art exploration and requires projects to include hands-on learning sessions. Applicants must demonstrate a partnership with schools and meet specific eligibility criteria, ensuring impactful and meaningful artistic education for students.

The SU-CASA Grant is a 3-month program placing local artists in Staten Island senior centers to engage older adults through creative workshops. Each residency concludes with a public event showcasing the participants' work. Artists receive a stipend of $6,000 and a $2,000 budget for materials. Funded by the NYC Council, this initiative fosters collaboration among various city departments and supports artists passionate about teaching and working with seniors.

The Lane and Elizabeth C. Dwinell Charitable Trust Grant aims to strengthen communities and foster positive social change in New Hampshire. Established by Lane and Elizabeth Dwinell, who dedicated their lives to civic engagement, the trust supports diverse charitable organizations, especially those focused on reducing healthcare costs and enhancing local culture. The foundation prioritizes projects that address community needs, particularly in Lebanon and the Upper Valley, while adhering to specific eligibility criteria.

The WMU College of Arts and Sciences offers the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Grant to support undergraduate students in hands-on research with faculty. This grant encourages academic excellence by providing funding for materials, stipends, travel, and project-related expenses. Students must have a declared major in the college, complete at least 9 credit hours, and maintain good academic standing to be eligible. Funds are disbursed under faculty supervision, ensuring proper use according to university procedures.

The Peter J. Schmitt Endowment for Experiential Learning at WMU supports diverse learning experiences that connect history with the arts and nature. Eligible applicants include all members of the WMU community, with a focus on undergraduate and graduate students. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded annually for activities like workshops, field biology, and traditional crafts, enhancing personal insights into historical contexts and environmental interrelationships.

The WMU Department of History offers a renewable $1,000 History Fellowship Award for newly admitted full-time freshman students majoring in history or related fields. The P. Joann Womble Dehring Memorial Education Endowed Scholarship supports full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Western Michigan University’s College of Education and Human Development. This scholarship encourages those enrolled in teacher education, counseling education, or counseling psychology programs to apply, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 required. Renewable for eligible students, it aims to foster academic success and dedication in future educators and counselors.

The Marion I. Hall Endowment Scholarship supports students at Western Michigan University College of Education and Human Development. To be eligible, applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, be U.S. residents, and pursue a bachelor's degree, preferably in elementary or secondary education. Preference will be given to those preparing for careers in teacher certification programs. This scholarship aims to foster future educators committed to excellence in teaching.

The Lucille Abbott Nobbs and Alpha Beta Epsilon Endowed Scholarship supports full-time junior, senior, or graduate students at Western Michigan University, prioritizing ABE WMU Sorority members and those in teacher education. Applicants must provide proof of eligibility and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The award covers tuition, fees, and books, and may be renewable for up to two consecutive years if criteria are met and funding allows.

The Kelly Carman Memorial Scholarship supports full-time junior, senior, or graduate students at Western Michigan University College of Education and Human Development, particularly those pursuing early childhood or elementary education. Eligible candidates must be U.S. residents, enrolled full-time, and can renew the scholarship for a maximum of two consecutive years. Special consideration is given to non-traditional students, ensuring diverse applicants benefit from this scholarship opportunity.

The Bess L. Stinson Scholarship supports students enrolled in any program within the College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University. Candidates must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, although a GPA of 2.5 may be accepted with a faculty recommendation. This scholarship may be renewed upon reapplication, provided that the eligibility requirements are still met and funding is available.

The Mellon Graduate Fellowships at Cornell University, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, offer residential fellowships for graduate students in humanities. This program focuses on the 2026-27 theme of Survival, providing a stipend of $35,661, tuition waivers, and health insurance. The Lavonne Geist Memorial Scholarship offers $400 to graduating seniors or alumni from Dickinson County High Schools in Kansas who plan to pursue a degree in social sciences. The NCF Foundation Scholarship at New College of Florida supports students through academic merit and financial need-based funding. Established by generous donors, it aims to make higher education accessible, with nearly all students receiving some form of scholarship. Eligible applicants include incoming freshmen, transfer students, and currently enrolled students with an @ncf.edu email. A yearly scholarship application and FAFSA completion are required to ensure funding opportunities.

The William Simes Research Fund, established in honor of Frances Simes Hastings, supports graduate students and postdoctoral researchers conducting field research at Hastings Natural History Reservation in California. Awards of $2,000 are available to offset costs related to housing and research supplies for extended research periods. This fund fosters scientific inquiry at one of the oldest field stations in the University of California Natural Reserve System, promoting the stewardship of diverse natural habitats.

The Carol Baird Student Award for Field Research, established in 2017 by the JiJi Foundation, supports UC Berkeley students conducting high-quality research on California's natural history. With awards up to $25,000, the program is open to undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students. The funding is intended for field research starting in 2026, encouraging innovative inquiries into the state's diverse ecosystems, while also allowing past applicants to revise and resubmit their proposals.

The Sagehen Creek Field Station Graduate Student Research Grant supports graduate students conducting field research in the unique montane ecosystems of the northern Sierra Nevada. This grant offsets costs related to reserve user fees, research supplies, and travel expenses. Two awards of up to $1,500 each will be granted for the 2025 field season, with additional funds for those mentoring undergraduate researchers. It aims to facilitate impactful ecological studies and foster educational experiences.

The Regional Scholar Travel Grant, offered by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), provides up to $1,000 to support travel for faculty and independent scholars from Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Applicants must present a paper at the ASEEES Annual Convention and meet specific eligibility criteria, including residency in eligible countries and ASEEES membership. This grant aims to promote scholarly exchange and foster participation among junior scholars and first-time presenters.

The Convention Opportunity Travel Grant, offered by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), supports non-student members with incomes under $40,000 to present their research at the ASEEES Annual Convention. Established in 1948, ASEEES prioritizes first-time presenters and junior scholars lacking institutional support. The grant encourages diverse scholarly contributions and is aimed at enhancing the visibility of underrepresented voices in the field of Slavic and East European studies.

The Convention Inclusion Travel Grant, provided by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), aims to promote diversity in the field of Slavic and East European studies. It supports BA, MA, and PhD students from diverse backgrounds to attend the ASEEES Annual Convention, fostering understanding of racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ community members, and individuals with disabilities in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

ASEEES Next Generation Dissertation Research Fellowship Program

Established in 2025, the ASEEES Next Generation Dissertation Research Fellowship Program provides a maximum stipend of $28,000 for doctoral students at US universities, regardless of citizenship, to conduct dissertation research in Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies. The program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies.

Fellowship Project Scope

• The dissertation topic must be in Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian studies
• Most of the proposed research should be conducted in Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia but the fellowship can be used to conduct research for a briefer period in secondary site(s) such as the U.S.; in cases of equally qualified applications, some preference may be given to research entirely in the region

The stipend can be spent on expenses incurred while conducting research, including living expenses, research expenses, international airfare, visa expenses, and evacuation and health insurance.

Scholarship eligibility requires students to attend an accredited 2 or 4 year public or private institution of higher learning. All scholarships are for full-time students, unless otherwise noted. Renewable awards are for 4 years of undergraduate study and cannot be used for post graduate coursework; all awards are paid directly to the school or may be used for book reimbursement.

Purpose of this grant

Our Mini Grants for Libraries enable Oregon libraries to create and host events in their own communities around an annual theme that corresponds to our Consider This Conversations.

In 2026, Oregon Humanities will award $25,000 in funding to enable Oregon libraries to create and host events in their own communities.

Events should reflect our 2026 theme: Beyond 250, which marks the 250th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence. Applicants are welcome to interpret this theme and develop topics that are relevant to their communities. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, explorations of:

• How do we think about and experience equality, freedom, independence, tyranny, justice, union, and other ideas central to the Declaration and to our nation’s understanding of itself?
• How has the Declaration shaped the country we live in today, and how might we shape its future?
• What characterized the period of time before the previous 250 years, and how can reflecting on a community's history inform the future?

Some activities that are commonly funded by this grant include:

• Community dialogues
• Speaker events that include audience engagement
• Interactive author presentations
• Storytelling
• Programming that connects exhibits to current experiences
• Community-engaged interpretation of history, art history and theory, cultural history, or philosophy
