Through the Elmer & Kaya Berg Giving Fund at the FM Area Foundation, this grant round continues their commitment by investing in organizations working in the areas they cared about most.

Guidelines

Nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for funding to support meaningful programs and projects in our community. Organizations may submit one application per calendar year and will be asked to choose a single focus area: Basic Human Needs, Education, Health & Wellness, or Suicide Education & Prevention. Funding is intended for specific, existing programs or projects rather than general operating support. If you’re unsure which focus area is the best fit, we encourage you to reach out before applying.

Minnesota organizations working on gun violence prevention, justice reform, or violence intervention policy and practice can access funding through The Joyce Foundation for research, advocacy, and pilot initiatives. Grants support projects that advance racial equity, reform policing, reduce gun violence, and develop community-based alternatives to arrest and incarceration, which may benefit suicide prevention efforts in impacted communities.

The SCALE initiative aims to combat injury, violence, overdose, and suicide, the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among individuals aged 0-44. The Core State Injury Prevention Program (Core SIPP) aims to enhance public health infrastructure and partnerships to prevent unintentional injuries through data-driven strategies. Focusing on key areas such as traumatic brain injury, falls among older adults, and drowning, it seeks to improve community safety by strengthening data use and fostering collaborations. This initiative supports states in identifying local injury concerns, thus promoting evidence-based prevention approaches and increasing the capacity for sustained public health actions.

The CDC's Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program for States aims to enhance public health approaches to suicide prevention across the U.S. By targeting high-risk groups, such as veterans and rural populations, the program utilizes data to identify prevention areas, assess existing programs, and implement evidence-based strategies. Key outcomes include improved partner engagement and a measurable reduction in suicide rates. This initiative allows potential applicants to prepare by reviewing relevant data and forming strategic partnerships ahead of future opportunities.

Research institutions and similar organizations working on suicide prevention and youth services can access funding in Minnesota and other U.S. jurisdictions to rigorously evaluate primary prevention approaches for youth and young adults. Eligible crisis counseling providers in Minnesota and nationwide can apply for SAMHSA’s Disaster Distress Helpline program, awarding up to US $1,200,000 to manage and strengthen 24/7 crisis support services. Organizations offering suicide prevention, crisis intervention, or mental health support related to disasters may benefit, including those serving U.S. territories.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations supporting military personnel and families with suicide prevention and related mental health services in Minnesota and nationwide may be eligible for funding. Focused on veteran employment, family support, PTSD and traumatic brain injury treatment, sports rehabilitation, housing, and suicide prevention, Tee It Up for the Troops offers national, event-based, and time-sensitive grants to established organizations.

Nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations working on suicide prevention, healthcare, family services, or related human services in Minnesota may be eligible for one-time project support. Jay L. Smith Family Foundation supports U.S. nonprofits advancing healthcare, strengthening families, serving disadvantaged people, and addressing issues like suicide, Alzheimer’s, cancer, domestic violence, elderly care, and spiritual wellbeing.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations working on suicide prevention and related mental health issues in Minnesota can access funding through the Levin Family Foundation, with awards up to US $30,000. Grants support projects that address suicide prevention alongside issues like the opiate epidemic, human trafficking, anti-bullying, and social isolation.

Minnesota nonprofits serving active-duty military, veterans, and military families with innovative suicide prevention and related mental or physical recovery programs can access funding through Infinite Hero Foundation. Grants up to US $100,000 support program costs only, for initiatives in areas like brain health, physical recovery, veteran leadership, and family support at no cost to participants.
