Beckley Area Foundation

Beckley Area Foundation was established in January 1985 by ten community-minded citizens. It began with a gift of $1.1 million from the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation as “seed” money for this Raleigh County project. BAF assets have grown to over $70 million with over 500 different funds managed by our three trustee banks. Today, Beckley Area Foundation is one of West Virginia’s largest community foundations.

Since its inception, BAF has distributed over $23 million to charities and other worthy projects in the fields of education, public recreation, health & human services, the arts, animal services and beautification.

Scholarships

The Beckley Area Foundation proudly manages scholarship funds established by individuals, businesses, and organizations dedicated to helping students pursue higher education. Many of these scholarships are tailored for specific schools, fields of study, or graduates from local high schools, while others offer broader opportunities. No matter the path, our scholarships aim to support students from our region as they work toward achieving their educational goals.

Most of these scholarships must be awarded to students from our geographic area or at least preference given to such students. While the majority of scholarships benefit Raleigh County applicants there are others designated for Fayette, Summers, Webster, and Wyoming students. 

Bill Weese Trades Scholarship

Residents of Webster County, WV; Recent graduates and adult career-switchers seeking a professional trade or retraining assistance; Must attend a trade school including vocational programs offering certification or degree programs designed to teach specific employment skills; Additional requirement details available in application.

This scholarship is renewable.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Mariano and Maria Lampazzi Fiaschi Memorial Scholarship

Established by Colonel Peter Fiaschi in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating student from Susquehanna Community School District who intends to pursue a major in healthcare. The scholarship provides financial support for up to four years of college, contingent upon the recipient maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 and remaining in good standing within an accredited healthcare program.

Louisa Holton Morris Music Scholarship

Music studies with preference to those specializing in organ music; Weighted for need and merit; West Virginia resident with preference to Raleigh County.​

Ross C. Todd Scholarship

Merit based award open to West Virginia blind students. Both graduating high school seniors and college upperclassmen, which at the time of application have achieved and maintained a 3.0 grade point average or better, are eligible to apply; All other considerations being equal, the two recipients having attained and maintained the highest grade point average within the applicant pool shall be named as recipients; West Virginia residents who are matriculating seniors or students already enrolled in a college/university.

This scholarship is renewable.

The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) focuses on enhancing education and workforce development in food and agricultural sciences. It invites applications for various grants aimed at professional development, non-formal education for youth, community college training, and fellowships for both predoctoral and postdoctoral candidates. The program, managed by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, emphasizes the cultivation of skills necessary for the future workforce in agriculture, with multiple deadlines for submissions.

The ROSS Rapid Response Program (RRP) by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides expedited funding to assist communities in addressing urgent social needs. This program offers one-time cost-reimbursable grants for service coordination and direct services, especially in response to emergencies like natural disasters or public health crises. The ROSES25: B.2 Heliophysics Foundational Research program invites proposals for foundational research in heliophysics. The submission deadline for Step-1 proposals is May 1, 2026, with Step-2 deadlines announced 60 days prior. Amendments include an increase in Step-1 proposal length from two to three pages and clarification on budget expectations per award. Individuals may serve as Principal Investigators for only one proposal, with exceptions for specific institutional requirements.

Applications for this scholarship will be open from December 16, 2025, to March 3, 2026. The Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program invites applications for whole genome sequencing of pediatric cohorts. This initiative aims to explore the genetic basis of childhood cancers and congenital anomalies, enhancing our understanding of their etiology. Researchers are encouraged to propose sequencing methods, including whole genome and exome sequencing, to investigate genetic contributions and associations with cancer risk. The resulting data will be integrated into the Kids First Data Resource for broader research collaboration.

The Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program supports early-career clinical researchers aiming to enhance human health. The National Institute on Drug Abuse is funding pilot and feasibility studies aimed at preparing for substance use and HIV prevention research trials. The NIA Research and Entrepreneurial Development Immersion (REDI) program aims to enhance entrepreneurial education for graduate students and early-career scientists in aging and Alzheimer's research. This initiative prepares trainees for diverse career paths beyond traditional research, focusing on vital skills such as scientific communication, intellectual property, and market needs assessment. Through innovation-focused applications, the REDI program seeks to increase the number of Ph.D.-trained scientists ready for various career opportunities in translational sciences and entrepreneurship.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is set to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for randomized controlled trials examining the long-term effects of nutritional interventions on risk factors for age-related chronic conditions. This initiative seeks to enhance understanding of how various dietary practices can influence health throughout the life span, emphasizing the need for studies with at least five years of follow-up. Researchers are encouraged to prepare collaborative proposals in response to this upcoming funding opportunity.

The National Institutes on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is inviting applications for a Coordinating Center for the National Human Ear Resource Network. This initiative aims to enhance research on auditory and vestibular disorders by providing essential resources, facilitating collaboration among laboratories, and promoting the use of human ear tissues in studies. The Center will play a pivotal role in coordinating activities, sharing updates with the scientific community, and supporting various research efforts across the nation.

The LPGA Foundation

The LPGA Foundation supports women and young people through programs and initiatives aimed at empowering them through the game of golf. Since its founding, The LPGA Foundation has touched more than 500,000 lives through various scholarship and financial assistance programs, along with its flagship junior golf program, LPGA*USGA Girls Golf. The LPGA Foundation was established in 1991 and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which supports junior golf programs, scholarships, and financial assistance programs for women and young ladies.

The Chevron Dinah Shore Scholarship

The Chevron Dinah Shore Scholarship was established in 1994 by the LPGA Foundation to honor the late Dinah Shore, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, a Hollywood entertainer, and an honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. This Scholarship also helps preserve her legacy, as an advocate for women’s golf, co-founder of The Chevron Championship and honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame.

The Chevron Dinah Shore Scholarship is granted annually to female high school seniors who are pursuing a college education, but will not be playing collegiate golf. In an effort to preserve the legacy of Dinah Shore and her contributions to women's golf, Chevron is offering two (2 scholarships that will be awarded per year renewable over 4 years for each recipient.

The scholarships we award vary each year based on the unique criteria of each scholarship. In 2025, we awarded over $3 million in scholarships to over 500 students, including $1.3 million to 110 students in western NC through our Disaster Relief and Resilience Scholarship.

Depending on the scholarship, it may pay for tuition, room and board, books, fees and/or other related educational expenses.

Dr. Henderson D. Mabe, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund for Undergraduate Study

Graduates or graduating seniors from a Harnett County high school who are attending a college, university, community or junior college, technical school, nursing school, or other post-high school training, pursuing a degree or a certificate in the medical fields, such as nursing, medical technology, radiology technology, pharmacy, and other curricula focusing on medical services. 

This will be outlined in your award notification. The minimum scholarship award amount is $1,000.

Dr. Bob Townsend Scholarship Endowment

Hoke County resident who is a high school graduate and has been accepted to an accredited college or university and plans to study medicine. 

This will be outlined in your award notification. The minimum scholarship award amount is $1,000.

The Chevron Changing the Face of Golf Scholarship, awarded by the LPGA Foundation, aims to empower female high school seniors from minority backgrounds pursuing STEM studies. Established in 2022, this scholarship promotes diversity in golf and education, honoring Dinah Shore's legacy. By supporting young women, the LPGA Foundation continues its mission to change the face of golf and provide educational opportunities, enhancing representation in both golf and STEM fields.

Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains

Our mission at the Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains is to improve the region’s quality of life through the power of philanthropy. We do this by offering individuals, families, and businesses the most effective charitable giving tools available in the marketplace today. Borislav Dumitrov Memorial Scholarship

Established by the family of Mr. Dumitrov to provide tuition assistance for a graduating senior from any of the High Schools in Susquehanna County who will matriculate at a trade school or post-secondary degree program.
