Community Foundation of Henderson County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, public charity, governed by a volunteer board of directors, that has been assisting donors fulfill their philanthropic dreams since 1982.

Scholarships

Community Foundation of Henderson County's Scholarship Program began in 1984. Thanks to the generosity of passionate donors, over 2,000 traditional and non-traditional students have been provided more than $10 million in scholarships to pursue higher education.

Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited William L. Arbuckle Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be accepted to an accredited degree granting college or university within the Southern Appalachian Region. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the field of fisheries, aquaculture, freshwater biology, or other related fields. 

The George Oliver Benton Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, honors the legacy of George Oliver Benton, a former Lieutenant Governor and influential lobbyist. This fund supports Tennessee's legislative interns, promoting their growth and engagement in public service. By providing financial assistance, the fund aims to empower the next generation of leaders committed to making a difference in their communities, ensuring thoughtful generosity translates into meaningful change.

The Heloise Werthan Kuhn Scholarship Fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, supports pregnant or parenting teens in Tennessee. With a mission to foster self-esteem through education and technical training, the fund aims to empower these individuals to enhance their job skills and break the cycle of poverty associated with teen pregnancy. Established by Heloise Werthan Kuhn, the scholarship reflects her commitment to community welfare and education.

The Vulcan Materials Company Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing community quality of life through education, environmental stewardship, and employee involvement. Established in 1988, the Foundation supports public charities and government units, prioritizing proposals that improve public education and promote sustainable practices. Special consideration is given to initiatives that engage Vulcan employees and integrate multiple focus areas, ensuring a positive impact in the local communities where Vulcan operates.

The Carolyn Morrison Scholarship Fund, established in memory of a dedicated educator and community member, supports children from rural high schools in Tennessee. Eligible applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher or achieve a score of 21 on the ACT, with preference given to students from Overton, Putnam, and White counties. This fund aims to empower future generations through education and community engagement, reflecting the legacy of its namesake.

The Catie Summers Scholarship Fund, established by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, honors the memory of Catie Summers, a courageous cancer warrior. This scholarship is for graduating seniors in Middle Tennessee, with a preference for those from Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools who have battled cancer. It reflects Catie's love for learning and aims to support students who demonstrate resilience and academic achievement, providing them with opportunities to succeed.

Armstrong County Community Foundation

The Armstrong County Community Foundation, a public nonprofit corporation,

• Gives grants, scholarships, and organizational support to address the needs of our community.

Gerstbrein/McCanna Scholarship for the Arts

After a long and rewarding career in Landscape Design and Art Education, Lisa Gerstbrein/McCanna wanted to promote the Arts and Industrial Arts in the community where she made her home and her livelihood. Her career brought her tremendous joy in pursuits that she loved as well as the satisfying reward of helping students find inspiration in the worlds of Art and Industrial Art. She is a true believer in the concept of STEAM based education. Accordingly, she established a fund to provide scholarships for the advanced education of advancing Senior High School Students in these areas who are residents of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and are pursuing higher education in an approved program within 300 miles of their respective school - Armstrong High School, West Shamokin High School or Lenape Technical School.

The Reverend Lonnie and Patricia Gable, Jr. Scholarship Fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, supports children of full-time Christian ministry workers who struggle with college expenses. This initiative honors Rev. Lonnie Gable Jr. and his wife Patricia, who made significant sacrifices for their faith and community. The fund aims to provide educational opportunities for those whose families serve in ministry, particularly benefiting students interested in engineering and related fields.

Kansas Association of Independent Crop Consultants Scholarship Fund

The Kansas Association of Independent Crop Consultants created this scholarship fund to award to a qualified individual majoring in an agricultural field.

The Scarlett Family Foundation I-2 Scholarship aims to support current scholars enrolled in four-year colleges or universities in Middle Tennessee. This award provides supplemental funding for internships and special programs, reinforcing the Foundation's commitment to quality education. Established by Joe and Dorothy Scarlett in 2006, the Foundation has awarded over $23 million in scholarships, focusing on career readiness and literacy initiatives to empower students and enhance their educational outcomes.

The Tennessee Trucking Foundation Scholarship Fund, established by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, supports education for Tennessee residents who are dependent children, spouses, or employees of the Tennessee Trucking Association. This scholarship aims to empower applicants from Freshman to Senior status at Tennessee Higher Education Institutions or adjacent states offering in-state tuition, especially those interested in the trucking industry. The fund embodies the belief in education's transformative power.

The LadyAID Scholarship Fund, established by the GRAMMY Award-winning trio Lady A, supports students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). It aims to alleviate financial barriers for students from Tennessee and Georgia, promoting access to higher education. The scholarship is designed for those with a household income of $60,000 or less and is renewable, requiring annual reapplication. This initiative reflects a commitment to empowering Black communities and fostering educational opportunities.

The Ernest Morgan Memorial Scholarship, managed by CommunityGiving, supports central Minnesota student athletes and leaders to pursue higher education outside their home states. This scholarship aims to expand students' horizons and experiences, with a total award of $5,000 available. Open to high school seniors from specific schools, applicants are encouraged to apply online and demonstrate their leadership or athletic skills. This initiative enhances educational opportunities and fosters personal growth among local youth.

The Kent Flanagan Memorial Scholarship, established by family and friends of the late journalist Kent Flanagan, supports Tennessee students pursuing degrees in journalism. Eligible applicants include juniors, seniors, and graduate students with a B average or higher. This scholarship honors Flanagan's commitment to fair and unbiased reporting, reflecting the mission of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to foster positive change through education and community support.

The L.B. Research and Education Foundation Grant Program supports U.S.-based nonprofits focusing on innovative education and health solutions for underserved populations. Eligible organizations can apply by submitting a 400-word concept paper, and selected applicants may receive funding ranging from $10,000 to $75,000. The Foundation prioritizes projects that foster critical thinking and creativity, address health disparities, and encourage collaboration. There are no application deadlines, promoting year-round engagement.

Cindy Graves Nursing Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is intended for students who are pursuing an additional degree or certification in nursing to grow professionally and better serve their patients. Students may attend any accredited educational institution, college, or university.

This Fund honors Cindy Graves, a DeKalb County public health nurse who had a tremendous impact on the community. Cindy was a registered nurse at Kishwaukee Hospital for 30 years – working as a pediatric nurse and emergency room RN, house supervisor, ER charge nurse, EMS educator, EMS coordinator, and ER director (2005 – 2012). From 2012 until the time of her passing Cindy worked at the DeKalb County Health Department as the director of community health and prevention, health promotion and emergency preparedness. Cindy was very active in the community and with her church.

CHS Inc. Scholarship Fund

This Fund was created as a lasting memory to the legacy of the Elburn Cooperative and to support the communities that strengthen the cooperative.

The CHS Inc. Scholarship is available to high school graduates and current undergraduate students at an accredited college or university. Applicants must be a family member of an eligible CHS Inc. customer or employee. This scholarship is administered by the Community Foundation.

Esther Mae Nesbitt Medical Student Scholarship Fund

This scholarship supports past or current Illinois residents who are either accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled as a full-time student at an approved college of medicine. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Preference is given to female applicants and current or former residents of DeKalb County, IL.

Ed and Kim Kapper Physical Therapy Scholarship Fund

Created in memory of Ed Kapper, this Fund provides scholarship support for a high school graduate of a DeKalb County school who is attending an accredited physical therapy program at an accredited college or university.

Jeffrey A. Trail Memorial Fund

Created in memory of Lt. Jeffrey A. Trail in honor of his military service and accomplishments, this Fund offers scholarships to DeKalb County residents who are graduating seniors and continuing their education immediately following high school graduation at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university studying aviation technology (a.k.a. professional flight or similar degree) for pilot training only; or at an independent certified flight training program working toward flight/pilot certifications.

Bob Suddeth 4-H Scholarship Fund

The Bob Suddeth 4-H Scholarship supports DeKalb County graduating seniors who have been active in 4-H for at least six years, including their senior year of high school, and who plan to pursue agriculture-related education. Financial need is an important consideration, and students may attend any accredited trade school, college, or university. 

Beekhuis Scholarship

Award:

• One time award of $4,000.

The Imogene Coca Compassion in Care Scholarship, offered by the Delaware Community Foundation, aims to support Delaware residents pursuing degrees in nursing or medical fields. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and either have been employed for at least five years or hold an Associate's degree from a community college. This one-time award of $2,000 is part of DCF's broader commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and equity in Delaware.

Cumberland Community Foundation ("CCF") manages more than 60 scholarship endowment funds created by local individuals, families, civic organizations, and corporations who want to provide a path to higher education for future generations. 

Each year, Cumberland Community Foundation announces more than $1,000,000 in college scholarships to students from southeastern North Carolina.

Cooney-Wilderman Leadership Scholarship

Brian D. Slavenas Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Fund honors Brian D. Slavenas, a DeKalb High School graduate who was killed in Iraq (2003). The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior who is a resident of DeKalb County, IL, and going on to either major or minor in music. Preference is given to applicants who were involved in music during at least the last two years of high school.

We do this in three ways: By awarding more than 12,000 students scholarships, worth more than $65 million, each year. By providing financial support to 37 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). And by serving as the nation’s leading advocate for the importance of minority education and community engagement.

Henry C. McBay Faculty Research Fellowship

Dr. Henry Ransom Cecil McBay (May 29, 1914 – 1995) was an American chemist renowned for his excellence in teaching and mentorship. He received numerous awards for his commitment to encouraging disadvantaged students to pursue careers in the chemical sciences, including the American Chemical Society Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students into Careers in the Chemical Sciences.

The Henry C. McBay Faculty Research Fellowship is open to faculty members at UNCF member institutions and supports faculty-led research conducted in partnership with a student researcher or intern.

The fellowship provides:

• Up to $15,000 to support faculty research in a field of the recipient’s choosing
• Up to $3,000 to support a student researcher/intern
• Total possible award: $18,000

All funded projects must be completed within one academic year and no later than Spring 2027.

Reporting Requirements

Each principal investigator is required to:

• Submit a written final report on the research project at the end of Spring 2027
• A published paper or submitted manuscript may be substituted for the final report
• Submit a financial report detailing fellowship expenditures within six months of completing the grant

Wehrli Custom Fabrication Scholarship Fund

The Wehrli Custom Fabrication company created the scholarship to aid students interested in pursuing a career in the trades. The Fund supports two annual scholarships. The first is for a student attending a trade school or 2-year college, and the second benefits a student attending a 4-year college or university. Eligible areas of study include welding, machine tooling, auto mechanics, auto body, business management, and mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, or agricultural engineering.
