Leo Szilard Lectureship Award

To recognize outstanding accomplishments by physicists in promoting the use of physics for the benefit of society in such areas as the environment, arms control, and science policy. The lecture format is intended to increase the visibility of those who have promoted the use of physics for the benefit of society. The award consists of $5,000, a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus $2,000 travel expenses for lectures given by the recipient at an APS meeting and at two or more educational institutions or research laboratories in the year following the award. The lectures should be especially aimed at physicists early in their careers.

Nominations will be considered for three review cycles provided the nominator re-certifies the nomination before the next deadline.

LeRoy Apker Award

The LeRoy Apker Award recognizes outstanding achievements in physics by undergraduate students, and provides encouragement to students who have demonstrated great potential for future scientific accomplishment. Two awards are presented each year, one to a student from a PhD granting institution, and one to a student from a non-PhD granting institution. The award consists of $5,000 for the recipient, $5,000 for their undergraduate institution's physics department to support undergraduate research, a certificate, and reimbursement for travel to an APS meeting to give an invited talk.

Six finalists are selected to present their research for the Apker Award Selection Committee. Each of the finalists will receive an honorarium of $2,000, $1,000 for their undergraduate institution’s physics department to support undergraduate research, reimbursement for travel to the selection meeting, and a certificate.

Lev D. Landau and Lyman Spitzer Jr. Award for Outstanding Contributions to Plasma Physics

Recognizes outstanding theoretical, experimental, or technical contribution(s) in plasma physics and for advancing the collaboration and unity between Europe and the United States of America by joint research or research that advances knowledge which benefits the two communities in a unique way.

The award may be given to a team or collaboration of up to four persons affiliated with either European or United States institutions.

The award consists of $4,000, a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient, and a registration fee waiver to attend the meeting at which the award is to be presented.

The person or team receiving the award will be offered an invited talk at the forthcoming annual conference of APS-DPP (usually early November) or EPS-DPP (usually end of June, or first week of July), depending on the affiliation of the recipient(s).

On years that DPP is hosting, in the event of a team larger than five (5), DPP may cap the number of registration waivers.

Dr. Donald and Ann Gleason Memorial Scholarship

Provides scholarships for qualified Shasta County students with financial needs seeking a college education in the medical field.

Dr. and Mrs. Gleason had no heirs but still had a strong desire to help students with a financial need who were seeking a degree in the medical field. The Dr. Donald and Ann Gleason Memorial Scholarship will assist those pursuing an education in mental health, psychiatry, or pre-med studies.

The Ethel Zwiebel Scholarship, managed by the Community Foundation of the North State, supports Shasta County students majoring in music who demonstrate financial need. This award is open to graduating high school seniors and Shasta College students completing their two-year music program. By fostering educational goals, this scholarship aims to empower young musicians to pursue their passion for music in higher education.

This scholarship benefits a Shasta County graduating high school senior who is pursuing a vocational or technical certification at an accredited technical school or community college.

The Glen Hawk Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Helen Hawk, in memory of her husband. Glen Hawk Sr. served on the Shasta High School Board of Directors from 1979-1989.

Redding Electric Utility (REU) is proud to offer students in the Redding community awards from the REU Powering Redding’s Future Scholarship, Program. The purpose of REU’s Program is to identify and support local students dreaming and planning to attend community college, a 4-year college/university, or technical school. The primary goals of REU’s Powering Redding’s Future program is to encourage Redding’s youth to consider a college/university or technical school education that may lead to career opportunities in the electric utility industry, preferably with REU. This program will award up to $50,000 in scholarships for local students each year.

REU Powering Redding’s Future Scholarship Fund

Redding Electric Utility (REU) is proud to offer students in the Redding community awards from the REU Powering Redding’s Future Scholarship, Program. The purpose of REU’s Program is to identify and support local students dreaming and planning to attend community college, a 4-year college/university, or technical school. The primary goals of REU’s Powering Redding’s Future program is to encourage Redding’s youth to consider a college/university or technical school education that may lead to career opportunities in the electric utility industry, preferably with REU. This program will award up to $50,000 in scholarships for local students each year.

The Window of Opportunity Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, aims to support Gillespie County high school graduates who rank in the bottom 50% of their class or have participated in the Fredericksburg Academic Boosters Mentoring Program. The Spannagel Vocational Education Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, honors the legacy of vocational educator Billy Wayne Spannagel and his son, Dale Robin Spannagel. This scholarship supports graduating students from Kerr County who are accepted into vocational training programs, particularly those pursuing certification in aviation mechanics. The Miriam E. Kay Memorial Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, honors the legacy of educator Miriam E. Kay. This scholarship is aimed at supporting graduating Hispanic students from select high schools in Central Texas, helping them pursue higher education. Eligible applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA and can renew the scholarship for up to four years, ensuring they have the resources needed to achieve their academic goals.

The Loveless Family Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, provides multi-year scholarships to graduating students from Kerr County public schools. It honors students who demonstrate a strong commitment to their personal goals while overcoming life's challenges. Established in 1981, the Foundation promotes philanthropy and supports community impact across 10 counties in Central Texas, ensuring a prosperous future for the region.

The Louella Beazley Memorial Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, supports graduating high school students from Kerr County pursuing degrees in medicine or nursing. This four-year renewable scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 and encourages recipients to engage in extracurricular activities and community service. The fund honors Louella Beazley's legacy and continues to assist local medical students, ensuring they have the necessary resources to succeed in their educational endeavors.

The Linda Baumann Memorial Scholarship, established by family in memory of Linda Baumann, supports graduating seniors from Kerr County. The Karolyn Kolb Martinez “Excellence in Nursing” Memorial Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, honors the legacy of a dedicated nurse by supporting students pursuing nursing degrees. This scholarship is available to high school graduates and current nursing students in Central Texas counties. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to nursing excellence and maintain a minimum GPA, with reapplication allowed for up to three years.

The Joshua Tyree Williams Memorial Scholarship, established by Big Brothers Big Sisters, honors the legacy of Joshua Tyree Williams by providing educational funding to deserving students. The Hill Country Performing Arts Scholarship, funded by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, supports graduating students pursuing higher education in performing arts. The Frederick Carl Hawkins Endowed Educational Scholarship, established by The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, supports Kerr County students pursuing higher education. Created in memory of Freddie Hawkins, a dedicated youth mentor, the scholarship requires applicants to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and provide two letters of reference.
