Best Unrestricted Grants for Nonprofits

The HOKC Good Works Program provides over $2.5 million annually in grants to Kentucky nonprofits, aiding over 3.9 million individuals. Established in 1951, it has distributed $68 million through more than 8,900 grants, relying on the support of over 30,000 active Colonels globally. Eligible nonprofits must be 501(c)(3) organizations based in Kentucky, operational for at least five years, and focused on tangible community benefits, aligning with the program's mission to foster community enhancement and support.

Clean Energy Fund (CEF) Building Electrification Grant Program

Commerce is accepting applications for the Clean Energy Fund Building Electrification Grant Program. These grants are intended to be used by current program grantees to enhance their existing building electrification projects and pursue additional measures to increase energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

Funding

Commerce will distribute the remaining $495,000 from the CEF5 Building Electrification Grant Program. There is no minimum request amount, and the maximum award is $495,000.

The HOKC Good Works Program provides medium grants ranging from $2,500 to $9,999 to support Kentucky nonprofits. With over $2.5 million distributed annually, the program aims to enhance community services in areas such as education, health, and support for low-income individuals. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits operating for at least five years within Kentucky. Ineligible entities include religious organizations and most government bodies. This grant initiative has a strong history of impactful contributions to local communities.

The Comis Foundation Grant aims to provide equitable opportunities for children to thrive through education and community engagement. It supports innovative programs that enhance educational outcomes, focusing on areas such as capacity building and pilot projects. With funding ranging from $5,000 to $75,000, the foundation prioritizes nonprofit organizations that foster inclusive environments. By emphasizing trust and collaboration, Comis Foundation strives to create lasting impacts in the communities it serves.

The Robert B. and Ruth K. Lee Foundation Grant aims to enhance the quality of life in Greenville County, South Carolina. Established in 2000, the foundation supports diverse areas including arts, education, health, and human services. With no geographic limitations, it primarily funds programs benefiting the local community. Grants typically range from $2,000 to $5,000, emphasizing initiatives for the elderly, children’s programs in the arts, and literary projects. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) exempt to be eligible.

The Target Foundation's Hometown Racial Equity Grant aims to advance racial equity for underserved communities in the Twin Cities. With over a century of commitment to social responsibility, the Foundation addresses systemic barriers by investing in entrepreneurship, workforce development, housing, and asset building. By supporting BIPOC-led organizations, the Foundation seeks to create equitable economic opportunities, ensuring that all families can thrive and contribute to a vibrant community. Grants range from $25,000 to $200,000, focusing on sustainable impact.

GO Virginia Program Overview

GO Virginia is a collaborative economic development initiative, that provides project-based incentives to encourage collaboration between private industry, higher education and local government in each region to produce results that will grow and diversify the regional economies and ultimately the commonwealth.

To achieve the program goals, the GO Virginia State Board has created nine regional councils. These councils are responsible for developing regional Growth and Diversification Plans and implementing those plans through the submission of project applications. Applications approved at the regional level are advanced to the GO Virginia State Board for funding.

The GO Virginia State Board has identified four primary investment strategies to achieve the program goals. The four priority investment strategies are:

• Workforce Development – building talent pipelines aligned with business needs that increases the pool of qualified workers
• Site Development and Infrastructure - preparing a regional portfolio of business-ready sites that attract private investment
• Entrepreneurship & Innovation (Startup Ecosystem) - creating a resource-rich environment for scalable start-ups and early-stage companies 
• Cluster Scale-Up -  helping existing regional industries grow and compete at a larger scale

All successful projects should align with at least one of these strategies and demonstrate a clear connection to a region’s Growth & Diversification Plan. See the GO Virginia Program Manual for details.

• GO Virginia is not an economic development incentive program. Individual private businesses may not receive funding, nor can any project provide exclusive benefits to a single private business.

• GO Virginia funds must support new and expanded efforts — not ongoing operations. Funding cannot be used to continue, sustain, or supplement the operating costs of existing programs. Projects must clearly demonstrate added value and represent new activity that advances GO Virginia’s mission. Proposals must fill a documented gap, scale a proven model, or introduce a new approach that supports regional priorities.

Virginia Growth and Opportunity Fund (GO Virginia) Competitive Grants

Competitive Grants are designed for projects that involve two or more GO Virginia regions (multi-regional) or go beyond what a single region’s annual allocation can support. They give regions the ability to collaborate or pursue initiatives that deliver substantial economic impact. To qualify, a project must present an extraordinary economic opportunity—one that is transformative in scale.

Competitive Grants allow regions to scale their ideas, tackle challenges that cross boundaries, and pursue transformative projects leverage regional strengths aiming to expand opportunities that benefit multiple localities and industries.

Application Types

Competitive Grants can support planning or implementation projects. The type of application depends on whether your project is multi-regional or single region. Competitive Grants include: Multi-Regional Planning Grants; Multi-Region Implementation Grants; and Single Region Implementation Grants.

Single Region Implementation Grants

Single-Region Implementation Grants are available for extraordinary opportunities within one region that cannot be fully supported by that region’s annual allocation. These projects are intended to address unique, high-impact needs where the scale of investment exceeds local resources but still delivers outcomes consistent with the goals of GO Virginia.

The expectation is that single-region projects will demonstrate the same level of rigor as multiregional efforts—clear economic impact, measurable outcomes, and long-term sustainability—while making the case for why Competitive Grant support is essential. In some cases, the request may use a mix of per-capita funds and Competitive Grant funds; in other cases, it may rely entirely on Competitive Grant funds.

The Season to Share Grant, presented by the Denver Post Community Foundation, supports nonprofit organizations committed to helping low-income children, youth, and families in the Denver area. Grant funding focuses on programs addressing children and youth development, health and wellness, homelessness, and hunger. Eligible organizations must demonstrate strong outcomes and sustainable funding. Applications are reviewed annually, with a competitive process ensuring that funding is allocated to impactful programs that effectively serve vulnerable populations.

Ohio Environmental Protection Agency

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is a state agency whose goal is to protect the environment and public health by ensuring compliance with environmental laws. Those laws and related rules outline Ohio EPA's authority and what things we can consider when making decisions about regulated activities.

Ohio EPA was created on Oct. 23, 1972. It combined environmental programs that previously had been scattered throughout several state departments. 

Community and Litter Grants

Local governments and nonprofits can receive funding to purchase equipment for collecting and processing recyclables and construction and demolition debris. These organizations can also receive funding to implement litter collection events, outreach, and education. Tire amnesty programs, with a minimum $0.50/tire collection fee, are an eligible activity. Grantees have 24 months to complete their projects, but they may choose to close out the grant earlier than the specified deadlines with no penalty, provided it aligns with the grant timeline.

Combination Grant Requests

A single application may include a combination of grantrequests. For example, a litter collection event, drop-off containers, and outreach and education may be included in one application. Combination grant requests will be evaluated as a single application, not by the individual activities. A combination grant request is eligible if:

• the requested total amount equals $100,000 or less
• KAB certification and KAB renewal may not be requested together

The Central Minnesota "Difference Maker" Grants aim to foster significant advancements in racial equity across the region. Funded by the Central Minnesota Community Foundation, these grants, ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, support eligible nonprofits, schools, and government entities serving Benton, Stearns, and Sherburne Counties. The initiative encourages collaborative projects addressing racial disparities and community engagement, promoting sustainable impacts and additional investments.

The Stratton Foundation Grant aims to improve the health and welfare of children and families in southern Vermont by funding sustainable programs that address poverty challenges. It focuses on four key areas: food and hunger, health and dental care, basic necessities, and education. Grants are awarded to 501(c)(3) organizations serving vulnerable communities, with no fixed amounts but varying reporting requirements based on the grant size. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that demonstrate sustainability and effective management.

Indigo Hope Foundation: Addiction Recovery Programs Grant

Funding programs that offer treatment, counseling, recovery support services, and harm reduction for individuals battling addiction.

The Plymale Foundation Grant, established by Robert E. Plymale in 1963 and now part of the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation, supports 501(c)(3) organizations in Campbell County and surrounding areas. With approximately $40,000 available annually, grants typically range from $1,000 to $15,000, focusing on social welfare, healthcare, education, and children's needs. The foundation emphasizes funding special projects rather than operating expenses or capital projects.

The Environmental Protection Fund Grant Program for Parks, Preservation and Heritage (EPF) offers matching grants for the acquisition, development, and improvement of parks, historic properties, and heritage areas in New York. It supports municipalities and not-for-profits, ensuring long-term protection of funded projects. The program encompasses three categories: Parks, Historic Preservation, and Heritage Areas, aimed at enhancing recreational facilities and preserving cultural heritage through well-defined projects and planning.

The Kars4Kids Small Grant Program aims to support educational initiatives globally, impacting the lives of children. This program welcomes applications from IRS-recognized nonprofit organizations focused on youth development, mentorship, and education. Grants typically range from $500 to $2,000, depending on mission alignment and available funds. Kars4Kids, a national Jewish nonprofit, is dedicated to nurturing productive community members through educational and mentoring opportunities.

The Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America offers the Financial Sustainability Grant to support nonprofit organizations that promote economic inclusion and financial stability. Grants range from $50,000 to $75,000 for one-year commitments, focusing on workforce success through education, job training, and entrepreneurial support. Eligible organizations must be tax-exempt under IRS 501(c)(3) and primarily serve low- to moderate-income families in the Twin Cities metro area.

The Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation provides grants to support programs and projects that benefit the people of Maui County. With a legacy rooted in philanthropy, the foundation focuses on areas such as human services, housing, health, education, arts, and environmental preservation. By prioritizing community needs and organizational stability, the foundation aims to create a significant impact through modest grants that enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations in the region.

The Racial Equity Fund Grant, initiated by the York County Community Foundation in 2021, aims to promote equitable opportunities by funding projects that combat racism and inequity. Designed by a committee of community leaders of color, this grant prioritizes initiatives led by people of color, focusing on areas such as community leadership, education, health, and wellness. The committee reviews applications to ensure alignment with the fund's purpose, providing vital support to enhance community well-being.

The Community Grants for Educational Success aim to enhance educational achievement for underperforming children and youth in South Hampton Roads. By supporting innovative programs, the grant focuses on preparing students for kindergarten, preventing dropouts, and facilitating transitions to higher education. The initiative emphasizes the importance of education in fostering economic development and personal prosperity, aiming for measurable outcomes like improved graduation rates and increased enrollment in post-secondary education.

Who We Are

The organization is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) Charitable Trust supported by members of the NH Beverage Association, the Beverage Distributors of New Hampshire Association and the New Hampshire Grocers Association. This collaborative effort by food and beverage companies has developed comprehensive programs to address, litter issues, recycling challenges, environmental awareness and education.

What We Do

We accomplish these goals by offering municipal recycling grants and signs, anti-litter programs and technical assistance to recycling programs. New Hampshire communities are eligible to apply for funding to assist with the purchase of recycling equipment. This includes monies to purchase curbside collection bins, balers, crushers, roll-off containers and other equipment that will help a community achieve higher diversion rates.

Municipal Recycling and Storage Equipment Grants

New Hampshire communities are eligible to apply for funding to assist with the purchase of recycling equipment. Grant applications are considered on an individual basis and funding may be up to 20% of the purchase price of the equipment. While we will not help with the purchase of land, studies or buildings, we do help fund the purchase of balers, crushers, roll-off containers and other equipment that will help a community achieve higher diversion rates.

Recycling Equipment grant applications are accepted on a rolling schedule, with current applications being considered every two months and up to 9 months given to allow communities to purchase and install suitable equipment. Grants are paid as a reimbursement to communities after they have purchased the equipment. Equipment purchased with NHtB grant money must be used exclusively for recycling. Communities that discontinue their recycling programs must either repay NHtB or, where applicable, work with NHtB to transfer that equipment to another community for use in recycling.

The Special Emphasis Limited Project Grant from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons aims to address health disparities in colorectal surgery. It focuses on improving care for racial/ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ+ populations, and individuals with disabilities. Proposals should concentrate on patient-oriented interventions and may explore quality improvement, access to services, and enhancing workforce diversity. Funding of up to $20,000 is available for innovative projects that promote equity in colorectal healthcare.

The CA ACEP - Agricultural Land Easements (ALE) program, managed by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, is designed to protect the agricultural viability of eligible lands. This initiative helps landowners, including tribes and local governments, by limiting non-agricultural uses through conservation easements. ALE enhances public benefits such as environmental quality and wildlife habitat while ensuring the long-term stewardship of agricultural lands, vital for maintaining the nation's food supply.

The Robert and Doreen Marshall Fund for Dramatic Arts and Classical Music, managed by the Orange County Community Foundation, supports dramatic arts and classical music programs in Orange County. This competitive grant program prioritizes funding for opera, choral, and symphonic performances, as well as dramatic arts performance groups and arts education for youth. It reflects the Marshall's enduring commitment to enhancing the cultural landscape through the performing arts.

The Millennium Fund for Children, a collaboration between the Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Beacon Journal, aims to enhance the quality of life for children across Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark, and Wayne counties. This fund supports various programs in arts, education, and health services, making impactful grants that address community needs. By connecting passionate philanthropists with local organizations, the fund fosters enduring philanthropic relationships and inspires new donors to contribute to meaningful causes.

The MN AWWA Advanced Degree Scholarship offers up to three $3,500 scholarships annually to students enrolled in water-related Bachelor's or Graduate degree programs. Applicants must be juniors or seniors at accredited institutions and submit necessary documentation, including transcripts. The scholarship is awarded directly to the educational institution, and winners are recognized at the MN AWWA Annual Conference, typically held in Duluth, MN each September.

The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board offers Organizational Development Grants to support nonprofit organizations in developing affordable housing and conservation projects. Eligible applicants, including municipalities and certain state agencies, can receive up to $33,750, while new organizations may apply for up to $12,000. These grants aim to ensure long-term benefits for Vermonters and promote sustainable community development. For application inquiries, please contact the Conservation Director.

The MA Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) program supports agricultural producers in mitigating financial risks through diversification and conservation practices. Administered by NRCS, it provides financial assistance up to 75% for conservation costs, with a cap of $50,000 per participant annually. Eligibility includes land control and compliance with regulations. AMA is available in 16 states with historically low Federal Crop Insurance participation, promoting sustainable farming and resource management.
