Maryland Heritage Areas Authority

The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) is an independent unit of government that operates in the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) and is chaired by the MDP Secretary. MHAA oversees the Maryland Heritage Areas Program, which is housed administratively within the Maryland Historical Trust.  

Maryland Heritage Areas Program Project Grants

The Maryland Heritage Areas Program awards approximately $3 million towards capital and non-capital project grants within one or more of Maryland’s 13 heritage areas. These projects highlight Maryland's diverse heritage, enhance local communities, and promote tourism, sustainability, and economic development. 

Non Capital Project Grants

Capital projects funds support and create heritage tourism resources and experiences within the 13 heritage areas. Includes: Planning; Interpretation; and Programming (preference is given to new or pilot programs rather than ongoing activities.

Skilled Trades Scholarship

The Greater Milan Area Community Fund is proud to support students pursuing skilled trades and hands-on career pathways that build practical skills, open doors to stable employment, and strengthen our local community.

Scholarship awards are typically paid directly to the accredited trade program or educational institution and are generally non-taxable.

Applications are evaluated two times each year for awarding in the six months after application and selection.

The Center of Excellence Grant aims to establish regional hubs within a hub-and-spoke care model to enhance healthcare access for rural Iowans. This initiative, backed by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, focuses on improving care coordination in maternal health, mental health, specialty care, and chronic disease management. By leveraging shared resources and collaboration among healthcare providers, the program seeks to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care, ultimately promoting innovation and improving health outcomes in underserved communities.

The Robert K. Dunn Perpetual Charitable Trust Fund Grant supports nonprofit organizations in the Greater Kankakee River Valley Area, focusing on projects that directly benefit youth. This year, over $42,000 will be awarded to initiatives that enhance youth services, emphasizing visibility, impact, and the ability to demonstrate measurable outcomes. The grant prioritizes organizations with 501(c)(3) status that address pressing community needs, ensuring sustainable benefits for Kankakee and Iroquois Counties.

The Big Sur Fund, established by the Community Foundation for Monterey County in 2020, focuses on supporting nonprofit organizations that enhance community resources in Big Sur. Priorities include health, safety, education, arts, culture, and community stewardship. Grants are awarded annually, targeting impactful projects such as educational programs, sustainable tourism, and community partnerships. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving the Big Sur area, with a commitment to addressing local needs effectively.

Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)

Introduction

The Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 (P.L. 85-578) created a matching grant program to stimulate, encourage, and assist states with the acquisition, development, and expansion of quality outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The Land and Water Conservation Fund Program (LWCF) is a reimbursement grant program funded by revenues generated from outer continental shelf oil and gas drilling. New Mexico is eligible to receive funding allocations from the United States Department of the Interior (DOI) whenever Congress appropriates LWCF funds for this purpose. The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), State Parks Division (Division) serves as the agency responsible for the LWCF and the Division is assigned administrative responsibility. The DOI manages the LWCF program through the National Park Service (NPS).

In 2024, New Mexico was allocated approximately $3.51 million by the NPS for local assistance grants to support outdoor recreation and education, education, resource protection, and wetland acquisition across the state.

The Millennium Fund for Children, a collaboration between the Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Beacon Journal, aims to enhance the quality of life for children across Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark, and Wayne counties. This fund supports various programs in arts, education, and health services, making impactful grants that address community needs. By connecting passionate philanthropists with local organizations, the fund fosters enduring philanthropic relationships and inspires new donors to contribute to meaningful causes.

Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is seeking proposals to establish maternal wraparound programs for pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders (SUD) at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Idaho. The purpose of this funding announcement is to expand access to substance use disorder and/or co-occurring mental health services for pregnant and parenting women by strengthening community-based care delivery within FQHC settings. 

The DC Health Community Health Administration is seeking qualified applicants for the Equitable Food Access Initiatives: School Based Nutrition Market. This initiative aims to enhance food access in communities facing food insecurity by implementing evidence-based interventions. Targeting over 10,000 vulnerable residents throughout the year, the program will support families with children by promoting healthier food environments and reducing chronic disease burdens. Applications are encouraged from those ready to improve nutrition and food security for all.

The Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation provides grants to support programs and projects that benefit the people of Maui County. With a legacy rooted in philanthropy, the foundation focuses on areas such as human services, housing, health, education, arts, and environmental preservation. By prioritizing community needs and organizational stability, the foundation aims to create a significant impact through modest grants that enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations in the region.

El Paso County Community Development Block Grant

Since 2009, El Paso County Community Development Block Grant funds have been awarded to local jurisdictions and non-profit organizations. Agencies with experience administering federal funding will likely have adequate internal controls and policies to successfully implement a CDBG funded project. Eligible projects are those that serve low-to-moderate income residents (LMI), create jobs for low-to-moderate income clients (LMJ), or serve a low-to-moderate income area (LMA) within El Paso County.

The AWWA Scholarship Program, administered by the American Water Works Association, offers a $5,000 scholarship to graduate-level students pursuing careers in the water industry. Recognizing the vital role of future professionals, AWWA aims to support education in water supply and wastewater management through this scholarship initiative. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest U.S. investor-owned water utility, emphasizing the importance of investing in education for sustainable water solutions.

The General Operating Support Grant Program offers essential funding to non-profit organizations focused on arts and humanities. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to diverse artistic expressions and community engagement, aligning with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' goals. The program reviews applications based on three categories: Generalists, Service Organizations, and Capacity Building, ensuring that a significant portion of resources is dedicated to arts and humanities initiatives.

The Sonnentag Foundation Grant supports organizations in cities where County Materials Corporation operates, focusing on four key areas: Hunger & Homelessness Support, Service Members & Veterans Support, Sexual Abuse & Domestic Assault Services, and Mentoring & Skills Building. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) recognized organizations that serve the broader community. The foundation aims to empower vulnerable populations, including veterans, to lead fulfilling lives and provide essential services for healing and personal development.

The Gerrit R. Ludwig Scholarship Fund supports high school graduates from East Hawai'i pursuing degrees in fine arts or classics. Established by Dr. Gerrit Ludwig, an ophthalmologist with a passion for the arts, this fund aims to assist students who demonstrate financial need and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Eligible applicants must be full-time students at accredited institutions in the US and graduates of East Hawai'i public high schools.

Environmental Stewardship: Community Grants

FAO, through its Environmental Stewardship Pillar of Prosperity Fund, offers funding opportunities to advance conservation, environmental stewardship and the greater well-being of Appalachian Ohio.

We know relatively modest projects can make an outsized difference when they promote environmental stewardship and engage whole communities in conservation. More details about these grants and how to apply can be found on page 5. At least $50,000 is available to support community grants.

The PCCF: Women’s Giving Fund Grant supports transformative philanthropy for women and children in Summit County, Utah. Funded by the Park City Community Foundation, this grant seeks high impact projects that yield measurable outcomes and foster community collaboration. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, while presenting attainable goals and measurable objectives. This initiative aims to create lasting positive change within the community.

The McClure Foundation Mini-Grants aim to enhance career exploration and postsecondary planning for young Vermonters. With grants ranging from $250 to $2,500, the program supports schools, libraries, and community organizations that provide crucial resources for students. Given the low continuation rates to higher education, these grants seek to make pathways to promising careers more visible, accessible, and equitable, ensuring that all young people in Vermont have the support they need to succeed.

Health Zones

Multi-year funding for cross-sector collaborations that improve health outcomes and access to care in local communities. 

Health Zones Program in Philadelphia, PA

A variety of factors influence a person’s health, including access to health care services, healthy food, and transportation. To tackle these challenges and improve health outcomes, the CVS Health Foundation (“the Foundation”) is collaborating with local organizations with a deep understanding of the community through our Health Zones initiative. We are committed to enhancing the coordination of health care and social services while dismantling barriers to health and wellness. Our vision is to empower and support local care systems within each Health Zone, making health care and social support networks more accessible and easier to navigate for everyone.

As part of the Health Zones initiative, we look for communities where many people are facing financial strain and have limited access to essentials like reliable health care, nutritious food, stable housing and local support services. When these basic needs are out of reach, it becomes much harder for individuals and families to stay healthy and manage chronic conditions - and these are the places where our support can make the greatest difference. This RFP will provide a three-year grant of up to $2.25 million to a cohort of nonprofit organizations that can support our Theory of Change to implement strategies that improve health outcomes for residents living in Philadelphia. 

The Zero-Emissions Access Program Grant (WA) aims to fund zero-emission carshare pilot programs in underserved communities with limited public transportation access. Grants range from $50,000 to $200,000, requiring applicants to match at least 10% of project costs. This initiative, supported by Washington's Climate Commitment Act, promotes clean transportation options to enhance mobility in areas facing high emissions.

The Janet Y. Sato Na Lima Paheona Scholarship Fund supports Maui high school graduates pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need, be Hawaii residents with a minimum GPA of 2.7, and provide a letter of recommendation. This fund aims to empower local students in various artistic fields, including music, dance, and graphic design, fostering creativity and educational growth within the community.

The Hilliard Education Foundation's Annual Grant Program empowers educators in the Hilliard City School District to enhance student learning through innovative projects. Grants support initiatives not covered by traditional funding, allowing teachers to create unique learning experiences. Open to all district staff, these grants are awarded annually for projects commencing in the following school year. Fund requests of up to $10,000 are welcomed, fostering creativity and educational excellence in the community.

The Multi-Year Sustaining Grants by the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation support small-scale projects in Vermont that promote equity in education and assist students in their postsecondary transitions. Grants range from $1,500 to $5,000 annually for three years, emphasizing sustained partnerships without formal proposals or reports. Eligible organizations must be based in Vermont and comply with 501(c)(3) requirements, ensuring inclusivity and non-discrimination in service provision.
