The Community Trust Foundation Inc.

The inception of a Western Maryland community foundation for building economic prosperity and for enhancing the quality of life for its people came from caring community leaders of The Greater Cumberland Committee. The primary question was whether the dream for this foundation could be realized. Together, they worked with Casper R. Taylor Jr., Maryland Speaker of the House, 1994-2003 and promoted the benefits of a community foundation for “ leaving behind a legacy to solve local problems by people who know and care about local problems” to the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce & Rotary of Cumberland, MD.

CTF was fortunate to operate with dedicated board members and a small part-time staff in a rent-free office space. Working tirelessly, the board worked to grow funds, secured operating capital, and submitted a 500-page policy and procedure manual to earn accreditation from the Council of Foundations. They also established advisory councils for each county (Allegany, Garrett, and Mineral), sponsored an annual Humanitarian Award Banquet for community outreach, and gained respect from community members and organizations seeking their leadership.

The Community Trust Foundation Grant

CTF serves as a community leader in philanthropy by raising, managing and distributing funds to address identified needs in Allegany and Garrett Counties, Maryland and in Mineral County, West Virginia. We partner with area non-profits and donors to make effective grants and enable local citizens to generate local solutions in their communities. We make grants to non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations dedicated to building better, stronger, more vital communities in the region.

Since our inception in 2006, CTF has awarded over $7 million in grants, building stronger more vibrant communities. CTF grants support; the arts, education, historical preservation, health and wellness and building a thriving environment. We are committed to identifying high-priority needs and opportunities to make a significant positive impact on the community. CTF grants are typically used to provide start-up or short-term funding to innovative projects designed to meet emerging needs or with creative solutions to longer-term issues.

The Preservation Alliance of West Virginia's Saving Historic Places Grant Program aims to fund the renovation and preservation of historic school buildings in rural communities facing economic challenges. With $665,000 available for grants ranging from $50,000 to $300,000, the program seeks to combat blight and encourage community engagement in preserving significant local landmarks. The Nancy R. Smith Family Fund, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, is dedicated to environmental and wildlife preservation. Established in honor of Nancy Richards Smith, the fund supports programs that educate individuals and organizations on the importance of environmental protection. With $22,500 available for grants, it prioritizes non-profit organizations that align with these goals in Raleigh County, ensuring sustainable support for our ecosystem.

The Buckner Woodford Clay, III Memorial Fund, established by Dr. Thomas W. Jarrett in memory of a friend passionate about environmental issues, aims to support anti-littering education and enforcement in West Virginia. With $35,000 available for grants, the fund prioritizes projects that promote environmental preservation, particularly in Raleigh County, and encourages youth involvement. Eligible applicants must be recognized non-profits or public institutions, with a focus on sustainability and community engagement.

The Grant for Community Fund of McDowell County, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, aims to enhance the lives of residents and visitors through support for arts, education, economic development, and youth activities. With a total of $1,500 available for distribution, this fund encourages charitable initiatives that promote well-being and community engagement. Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations and public institutions that align with the fund's mission.

Frontier Statehood Preservation Fund

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia announces $500,000 in special grant funding through the Frontier to Statehood Preservation Fund. This historic preservation grant program is dedicated to the rehabilitation and adaptive or continued use of certified historic buildings constructed as of 1871 – when, in a case called Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the legitimacy of the creation of the state of West Virginia in 1863.

Grant funds will support up to ten grant awards for the preservation and restoration of buildings that tell the story of colonial settlement in the Appalachian Mountains, the American Revolution, and the road to statehood, with a focus on creating, advancing, and/or sustaining service/amenity providers and cultural heritage tourism destinations in West Virginia. All properties must be individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places or included as a contributing structure in a National Register Historic District. Grant funding is made possible through the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant via the National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior.

The Harry E. & Olive T.
