National Housing Innovation Grant Competition

Home is foundational. It’s where we plant roots, raise and care for our families, and build community bonds. Yet in every corner of the country, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds need a home they can afford.

Wells Fargo is meeting this moment with a powerful grant opportunity. Together with Enterprise, Wells Fargo has launched the third iteration of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. The 2026 cycle of the housing innovation competition will identify and propel proven, ready-to-scale solutions that transform current practices and increase housing choice and access.

Eligible applicants will compete for five individual grants of $2 million to advance their innovation and drive meaningful, systems-level change in the housing and adjacent industries. Winners will gain access to mentorship and coaching from industry leaders and experts and join a powerful network of Breakthrough Challenge innovators.

Focus Areas

This third cycle of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge aims to meet the nation’s affordable housing challenges across all types of communities: Native, rural, suburban, tribal, and urban.

Proposals must encompass one or more of three focus areas:

• Design and Construction
• Finance
• Service Delivery and Programs

Applicants will be asked to show how their proof of concept or pilot program has achieved clear outcomes and success, and provide a clear pathway to expanding the innovation’s reach and impact

Priority scoring will be given to applications from entities that are based in – or whose innovations are designed for – one or more of these 28 states, plus D.C.:

Affordability

Innovations must serve residents at these income levels:

• Rental: 80% AMI or below
• Homeownership: 120% AMI or below
• Workforce housing: 120% AMI or below

The Avista Foundation supports non-profit organizations in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, southern Oregon, and Montana, focusing on education, vulnerable populations, and community vitality. Grants are available for 501(c)(3) organizations, civic groups, and schools addressing local needs. Ineligible requests include those for religious or political activities and funding for individuals. This funding cycle emphasizes projects that foster economic and cultural growth in the communities served by Avista Utilities and Alaska Electric Light and Power Co.

The Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award honors exemplary nonprofit organizations in the U.S. that foster collaborative partnerships across sectors. Annually, a national competition showcases numerous organizations demonstrating impactful community partnerships. Six organizations receive recognition, including the Thomas J. Moran Award, which offers $100,000, and the Frances R. Hesselbein Award, granting $75,000. Since 1996, the award has acknowledged 262 partnerships, emphasizing Mutual of America's commitment to societal improvement through collaboration.

The Queer Justice Momentum Giving Project Grant supports grassroots organizations led by LGBTQIA+ individuals in the Northwest, focusing on combating anti-queer legislation and fostering community resilience. Grants of $40,000 over two years prioritize projects that empower marginalized groups, especially those led by Black, Indigenous, and POC individuals. This initiative aims to create inclusive spaces and promote social justice, ensuring that queer communities can thrive despite ongoing societal challenges.

The Mountain West Organizing Grant, funded by the Social Justice Fund Northwest, aims to empower grassroots organizing across Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. This initiative prioritizes support for organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and people of color, particularly those in rural areas and small towns. Eligible projects include anti-hate education, equitable housing access, public advocacy, and labor organizing, fostering community resilience and inclusive policy-making.

The Foster Foundation Grant supports organizations in the Pacific Northwest that align with priority funding issues such as social services, education, medical research, and community engagement. The foundation seeks to cultivate long-term partnerships and is committed to improving community life through various initiatives. Eligible organizations must hold a 501(c)(3) status and address one of the foundation's priority issues while ensuring that funds are used within the designated geographic reach.

With year-round applications, the program offers technical and financial assistance tailored to individual goals, whether it's boosting crop resilience or wildlife habitat. Participants benefit from annual payments and can access additional funds through bundled enhancements. CSP's commitment ensures sustainable practices that lead to healthier ecosystems and profitable agricultural enterprises across Montana.

The MT Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) provides crucial support for farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners in Montana, promoting conservation practices on working lands. Through financial assistance and tailored guidance, NRCS empowers agricultural producers to enhance soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitats. This program addresses priority natural resource concerns while fostering sustainable agricultural operations. Year-round applications are accepted, making it accessible for eligible landowners looking to implement effective conservation strategies.

The Avista Foundation provides vital funding to non-profit organizations focused on education, vulnerable populations, and cultural vitality in its service areas across the Pacific Northwest. This cycle specifically invites proposals for arts and culture initiatives. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) entities or civic groups located within Avista's service area. The foundation aims to enhance community well-being and support creative endeavors that enrich local culture.

The Aquatic Invasive Species Grant Program, managed by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, provides funding to combat aquatic invasive species in Montana. With an annual budget of $278,580, the program supports projects aimed at prevention, control, and education. Eligible projects can receive up to $50,000 and may include monitoring, outreach, and applied research. Local proposals addressing state-wide priorities will receive preference during the evaluation process.

The Dr. Scholl Foundation offers grants annually to IRS 501(c)(3) organizations, primarily focusing on U.S. applicants. The foundation supports projects in education, social services, healthcare, civic and cultural initiatives, and environmental efforts. While the grant cycle runs from October 1 to March 1, it encourages innovative solutions to global challenges. Only one application per organization is accepted each year, and funding is limited to one year. Unqualified organizations, including political entities, are ineligible.

The Rieschel Foundation Annual Grant supports public charities in Gallatin and Park Counties, Montana, offering up to $20,000 for general operating expenses. The grant cycle opens in February, allowing eligible organizations to submit applications.
