GFO-26-601 - Charger Service Skills Accelerator Grant Program

This is a competitive grant solicitation. The California Energy Commission’s (CEC’s) Clean Transportation Program announces the availability of up to $6,000,000 in grant funds for projects that will increase the qualified workforce needed to service electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment. 

Funding will support training that leads to portable, industry-recognized credentials and may be used to expand existing training programs to include EV charging equipment service.

Background

Assembly Bill (AB) 118 (Nuñez, Chapter 750, Statutes of 2007), created the Clean Transportation Program. The statute authorizes the CEC to develop and deploy alternative and renewable fuels and advanced transportation technologies to help attain the state’s climate change and clean air goals. AB 126 (Reyes, Chapter 319, Statutes of 2023) reauthorized the funding program through July 1, 2035 and focused the program on zero-emission transportation. 

The Clean Transportation Program has an annual budget of approximately $100 million and provides financial support for projects that:

• Develop and deploy zero-emission technology and fuels in the marketplace.
• Produce alternative and renewable low-carbon fuels in California.
• Deploy zero-emission fueling infrastructure, fueling stations, and equipment.
• Establish workforce training programs and conduct public outreach on the benefits of alternative transportation fuels and vehicle technologies.

The CEC, in collaboration with the California Workforce Development Board (CWDB), is further committed to integrating the California Jobs First Strategic Sectors https://jobsfirst.ca.gov/blueprint/ and California Jobs First Regional Plans https://jobsfirst.ca.gov/regions/ that will support the creation of and access to family-supporting jobs including prioritizing industry sectors for future growth.  

MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM AWARD AMOUNTS

• The minimum CEC award amount per application is $500,000 and the maximum award amount per application is $2,000,000. Applicants must request at least $500,000.

The Connecting Joy Grant, provided by the Joy in Childhood Foundation, aims to enhance the hospital experience for children battling illness through engaging gaming programs. This initiative supports children's hospitals and nonprofits by funding equipment, staffing, and connectivity, ensuring children can enjoy gaming at their bedside. With grants ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, the program focuses on offering joy and distraction, helping young patients cope with their hospital stays while facilitating connections with peers.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

California 501(c)(3) organizations working in health or human services can seek support for programs that repair or care for people who have lost limbs in U.S. military service, or that actively improve Southern California communities. Grants from Balmes Foundation may benefit museums with relevant rehabilitation, veterans, or community-improvement initiatives.

The California Drought Funding Grants, provided by the California State Water Resources Control Board, aim to support projects addressing urgent drinking water needs and long-term resilience due to drought. Eligible applicants include public agencies, tribal governments, community water systems, and non-profits serving disadvantaged communities. Funding covers both short-term solutions like emergency repairs and long-term improvements such as new wells and treatment systems, ensuring a sustainable water supply for affected regions.

Urban Greening Grant Program

Funding Purpose

The Urban Greening Grant Program will fund projects that use nature-based solutions to mitigate the urban heat island effect, rising temperatures, and extreme heat impacts in urban areas.

Nature-based solutions include all the ways land can be managed to boost the health and resilience of natural systems, helping them store carbon and protect against climate change impacts, including extreme heat. Nature-based solutions that address extreme heat impacts use natural cooling strategies to limit temperature increase and urban heat islands. Examples include planting trees that provide strategic shade, expanding green spaces that serve as places of refuge during heat waves, and increasing tree canopy cover in cities, communities, and schoolyards.

Successful projects will green and cool communities and offer multiple benefits including sequestering carbon, limiting stormwater runoff, providing habitat and preserving biodiversity, protecting public health during extreme heat, increasing equity, and expanding economic and workforce opportunities. Funded projects are expected to advance the goals of the State’s Extreme Heat Action Plan and Nature-Based Solutions Climate Targets.

Funding Opportunity Overview

The California Sea Grant College Program is now soliciting proposals for applied research projects by new faculty that address California Sea Grant’s 2024-2027 Strategic Plan goals and objectives in Resilient Communities and Economies (RCE), Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture* (SFA), and Healthy Coastal Ecosystems (HCE). Proposals addressing our priorities in Resilient Communities and Economies will be given priority in order to best complement our existing investments in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture and Healthy Coastal Ecosystems. 

Proposals can only be submitted by, and support the applied research of, a new faculty member (see Eligibility) employed at a California-based university. Applied research (as defined in NOAA Administrative Order NAO 216-115B) is original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge, and is directed primarily towards a specific practical aim or objective. Projects that demonstrate meaningful impacts and benefits to coastal California communities and natural resources management agencies will be prioritized.

The Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) Fellowship: Brave Heart empowers Native youth leaders aged 18-24 to engage in environmental justice and advocacy. Through tailored training, mentorship, and community projects, CNAY fosters skills in leadership, stewardship of lands, and food sovereignty. This fellowship addresses the representation gap for Indigenous Peoples in climate justice, promoting cultural preservation while mobilizing youth to protect sacred sites and waterways. Applications are open to eligible Native youth residing in specific regions.

The Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) Fellowship: Remembering Our Sisters program empowers Indigenous women and femme-identifying youth, aged 18-24, to advocate against the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ (MMIWG2S+) crisis. Participants receive resources and training to honor lost relatives through storytelling and digital arts while promoting policies to increase visibility and end violence against Indigenous sisters. This fellowship fosters leadership and cultural grounding for impactful community change.

The Corporate Giving Program by the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation focuses on supporting nonprofit organizations within specific states. They prioritize initiatives that enhance community welfare, especially in agriculture, education, health, and environmental sustainability. Organizations must have 501(c)(3) status to apply, and preference is given to those involving Perdue associates. Ineligible requests include those from religious, political, or individual-focused groups. This program emphasizes broad community benefits over organizational affiliations.

The Native American Preparedness Tribal Grant, offered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, provides crucial support for California Native American tribes. This grant focuses on enhancing emergency preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to protect ancestral lands from oil spills. By fostering better readiness and resilience among tribes, it aims to ensure the safety and sustainability of their communities and environments.

The Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program aims to support large-size law enforcement organizations in California, focusing on training and enforcement related to impaired driving laws, including those pertaining to cannabis. With approximately $13 million available, each grant can reach up to $1 million, requiring applicants to justify their budget requests and demonstrate measurable goals. This initiative seeks to enhance public safety by addressing the challenges posed by drug-impaired driving.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is inviting proposals for a third-party administrator to facilitate community engagement for the California Satellite Methane Project. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of methane pollution and support community-based organizations with a total funding of $4.75 million. Up to three proposals may be awarded, with a portion of the funds allocated for administrative support, ensuring effective collaboration and outreach in the state's environmental efforts.

With approximately $11 million available, each grant application can request up to $2 million. The funds will support new initiatives or expand existing activities to ensure thorough investigations when fatalities occur due to vehicular incidents involving impaired drivers. Applicants must demonstrate a clear need and measurable goals for the proposed budget items.

RBC Foundation – USA aims to enhance community quality of life by supporting non-profit organizations that promote diversity and positive change. In 2023, it awarded over $2.8 million in grants, prioritizing youth programs for ages 15-29, arts access for diverse populations, and mental well-being initiatives. The foundation encourages sustainable projects that foster economic independence, providing critical support for education, mental health, and cultural enrichment, thereby making a significant impact across various communities.

The John W. Porter Trust Grant, established in 1947, aims to enhance the lives of Long Beach, California residents by supporting non-profit organizations. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) exempt and operate within California, with a preference for those serving the Long Beach area.
