Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley is a collection of individual funds and resources given by local citizens to enhance and support the quality of life in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

We are a tax-exempt public charity that allows individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations to establish permanent endowments and temporary funds within the confines of one large foundation.

Foundation funds are used to provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to area students. The Foundation also hosts a Youth Engagement in Philanthropy (YEP) program, which helps high school students learn more about philanthropy and empowers them to make a difference in the community.

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley serves the City of Aurora, Kane County, and Kendall County within the State of Illinois.

Scholarship Program

Scholarships are available to local students who will attend an accredited post-secondary institution within the United States of America on a full-time basis.

Dorothy K. Witte Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

This Fund honors the memory of Dorothy K. Witte (1912-2008) who taught in East Aurora School District elementary schools for the bulk of her career. She had previously taught briefly in several Lutheran schools prior to having her three children, Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Robert who all graduated from East Aurora High School. After her husband Paul’s death at age 46, she began teaching in the East Aurora School District 131, at Brady Elementary, to support her young family. Her career in education became her life’s passion which spanned 25 years (1958-1982).

Dorothy’s dedication to helping students who had behavioral and learning difficulties led her to be the “go to” teacher for working with students with educational challenges. Often her students were the only English speakers in their home, so she took Spanish lessons to be able to communicate more effectively with the parents of her students. She occasionally made home visits when families felt uncomfortable attending school conferences. Her dining room table at home was often cluttered with lesson plans, teaching supplies, and papers to grade. She was known to stay in her classroom until well after dark working to prepare for class the next day.

Her daughter Beth (1940-2011) followed her mother into a career in teaching/education. Her sons Jon and Bob initially studied to be teachers, but eventually went into the medical field as physicians. They now establish this scholarship to honor their mother and the teaching profession which has been a consistent thread through their family. The funds awarded are intended for a recipient who seeks to pursue a career as a public school educator, helping those who most need the expertise of a skilled and caring teacher.

George & Cora Webster Scholarship Endowment Fund

The George and Cora Webster Scholarship Endowment Fund provides scholarships to African American students who are graduates of high schools located within the Community Foundation service area.

George Webster is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh and attended Pennsylvania State University. In 1963, Mr. Webster enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. His service included sixteen months in Vietnam. After serving ten years in the Marine Corp, he joined the United States Navy. From 1979 until 1982, he was a Navy recruiter in Aurora. He served on five different aircraft carriers, and eventually achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. Upon his retirement from the service in 1988, he and his wife Cora Webster moved back to the Aurora Community. George was also an Aurora Election Commission Judge for twenty-one years and a member of the Aurora Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association for many years.

Cora Webster was born in Eudora, Arkansas. She worked as a licensed cosmetologist in Texas and was employed by both the May Company and the KMART Corporation in Illinois. Cora (1939-2022) was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church and served as a member of the Nurse’s Aide Ministry.

Mr. and Mrs. Webster were married in December 1969 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Chicago. They have one son, one granddaughter, two grandsons, and two great-grandsons.

The Treu-Mart Fund, a partnership between the Cleveland Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, aims to empower children and youth in Greater Cleveland. By focusing on support and resiliency, the fund seeks to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty in historically disadvantaged communities, ensuring that every young person can reach their full potential.

Shirley M. Hurd Education Scholarship Fund

The Shirley M. Hurd Education Scholarship Fund was created upon receipt of a bequest from the estate of Shirley Miller Hurd.

The fund supports college scholarships for local students. In the awarding of these scholarships, preference is given to students attending Northwestern University.

Mr. Hurd organized and was president of the world famous Sealmaster Softball team. He and his wife traveled throughout the country with the team, which eventually achieved championship status. Mrs. Hurd was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, where she established a scholarship for students attending St. Peter Catholic School.

The monetary value of each scholarship award varies depending upon the amount available in each individual scholarship fund. The most common scholarship award amount is $1,000 for a single year. Scholarships are designated as non-renewable one-year awards or renewable multi-year awards depending upon the scholarship fund criteria, as established by the donor of the scholarship fund.

Scholarship Eligibility

• Graduating senior from any Martin County high school.
• Top 25% preferable unless student has an outstanding extracurricular or if student worked to support him/herself or family, then can be selected from the next quartile.
• Prefer minority student, but not eliminating white students.
• Prefer a student who has participated in school athletics.
• Demonstrate financial need.

Lawrence A. Sanders Foundation Vo-Tech Scholarship Fund

Scholarship Eligibility

The Donor hereby designates and the Foundation accepts the following guidelines and criteria for the granting of awards from this Fund. Recipients will:

• Reside in Palm Beach or Martin Counties
• Hold a high school diploma or GED
• Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Career Certificate Program at Palm Beach State College or another accredited vocational, technical, or trades-training institution(s)located in Palm Beach or Martin Counties, and be deemed eligible for training in one of the following: HVAC Technology; Electrical Apprenticeship/Electrical Technology; Welding Technology; Automotive or Diesel Technology; Industrial/Mechanical Technology; Other approved technical/vocational programs aligned with workforce needs
• Demonstrate a commitment to complete the training
• Demonstrate financial need

Kim Love Sartory Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

Kim was born in Milan, Tenn., and moved to Jupiter in her preschool years when her father accepted a position at Pratt and Whitney. Kim began her banking career at 1st American Bank, later moving on to charter the opening of Admiralty Bank. She left the finance world in 1992 to work with her husband, Larry in the family business. She was dedicated to advancing the careers of women, serving on the board of Executive Women and as an active committee member of the Business Development Board and North Palm Beach Chamber. She passed away unexpectedly, and this scholarship serves to perpetuate her memory and spirit.

Samerian Foundation

Founded in 2003, the Samerian Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the vision of Cindy and Paul Skjodt, the founders. They seek to enhance the quality of life by providing funds through a grant making process for education, economic development, health, youth sports, community organizations meeting the needs of the underserved, and humanitarian projects.

Though the Samerian Foundation primarily serves Central Indiana, it has taken part in some international endeavors and have reached outside the state on special projects.

The Samerian Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of the Skjodt’s generosity. To date, they have granted 2,105 requests of nearly $93.4 million.

The Samerian Foundation is lovingly named after Cindy and Paul’s children, Samantha, Erik, and Ian, who serve on the board.

Ian J. Skjodt Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Simon-Skjodt family to encourage students to pursue degrees in media studies at Indiana University.

The Grand Forks Women's Fund Grant Program aims to empower girls and women by providing resources that promote economic, social, and political equality. This initiative supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and public entities that operate in Grand Forks, Walsh, or Polk County. Preference is given to new projects and grant applicants, fostering leadership skills and encouraging philanthropic engagement among women.

The Lakeshore Protecting Animal Welfare Fund aims to enhance the health and welfare of companion animals in Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and Calumet Counties. Established by five dedicated individuals, this endowment fund supports the mission of securing permanent homes for displaced animals. It honors the profound impact of loving animal companions on our lives, fostering a strong human-animal bond. This initiative ensures ongoing support for animal welfare in the community.

The Advancement Grant Program provides flexible matching grants to support Los Angeles County school districts in delivering quality arts education. With funding up to $25,000, the program enables districts to invest in projects aligned with their arts plans, ensuring sustainable practices beyond the grant term. Backed by the Funders Council and the LA County Board of Supervisors, it leverages public and private resources to enhance instruction in various art forms, including dance, music, and visual arts.

Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin

The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin gives everyone the opportunity to make significant and lasting gifts to their community. We manage over 320 funds that enhance Portage and Waushara counties. Together with our generous donors, we create a strong culture of philanthropy in Central Wisconsin.

United Negro College Fund

The Boule' Foundation in conjunction with the United Negro College Fund, will provide annual merit-based scholarships to entering college freshmen students (Fall 2026) attending four-year, accredited non-profit degree-granting colleges and universities of their choice.

This scholarship fund was created in memory of Connor Arthur Lynskey (18 years old) of Hinckley, New York. Connor aspired to be a rural physician and attended premedical school at Siena College. His dream was to practice medicine in an underserved area in order to help residents receive adequate health care.

Connor had an extraordinary way about himself for someone his age. He was God-inspired, loved everyone as he loved himself, and cared deeply about his family and friends. He had a mysterious ability to consistently make lemonade out of lemons. Everyone loved him when they met him. He was truly an inspiration to friends, family and clergy members alike, who now all suffer an enormous heart-wrenching void due to a careless and reckless drunk driver that took his life on August 11, 2018.

The Lenawee Community Foundation provides essential funding to not-for-profit organizations in Lenawee County, Michigan, focusing on civic, cultural, health, education, and social services. Grants are awarded after thorough evaluations of community needs and opportunities, prioritizing projects that promise significant local benefits. Organizations must meet specific eligibility criteria, including a pre-application process for larger grants. The foundation encourages innovative solutions that leverage resources and promote collaboration among charities, aiming to enhance the overall quality of life in the community.

The Greenbrier Valley Community Fund Mini Grant offers up to $250 for enrichment projects in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas counties. This funding supports local nonprofits aiming to enhance community programs within the upcoming year. Eligible applicants include any nonprofit organization located in these counties, making it an accessible opportunity for those looking to contribute positively to their communities.

The Greenbrier Valley Women's Fund Grant, established in 2006, supports local nonprofit organizations in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas counties by empowering women. Grants, awarded annually in September, provide funding for personnel, projects, materials, and capital improvements, ensuring impactful initiatives in the community. This donor-advised fund at the Greater Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation focuses on enhancing the lives of women and promoting gender equity in the region.

The PLTW Gateway Program Expansion in Georgia aims to support public and charter schools in expanding their existing PLTW Gateway programs. Eligible schools must be located in specific Georgia counties, and the total grant award is $10,000 for the 2026-2027 period. Funds can cover participation fees, required technology, and training-related costs, while salaries, benefits, and other non-allowable expenses are excluded. This initiative promotes STEM education in the region.

The William H. Young and Dorothy Young Mixer Field of Interest Fund, managed by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, aims to enhance the natural beauty of the Grand Haven area. Grants support projects focused on improving public natural settings and facilities. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations, government units, and educational institutions serving Northwest Ottawa County and greater West Michigan, provided they address the foundation’s sustainability priorities.

The Hawai'i Pizza Hut Scholarship Fund, established in 2007 by TD Food Group, Inc., supports residents of Hawaii pursuing higher education at two-year or four-year colleges. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need, maintain a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5, and be residents of Hawaii. Preference is given to previous recipients who continue to meet eligibility requirements and are in good academic standing. This fund aims to empower local students through education.

The Illuminate the Arts Grant (ITAG), administered by Creative Philadelphia, aims to uplift Philadelphia's creative sector through $1.5M in funding for individual artists and small organizations. Targeting historically underfunded communities, ITAG supports artistic practices while enhancing public access to the arts. Established post-COVID-19, this initiative fosters a vibrant cultural ecosystem and encourages applications from individual artists earning less than $66,850 annually, promoting inclusivity and resilience in the city's arts landscape.

The Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Centers (T42) program, funded by the CDC, focuses on enhancing occupational safety through targeted education and training. By fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration among academic institutions, this initiative aims to equip professionals with the necessary skills to address workplace health challenges. The program seeks to diversify the workforce and improve worker safety and well-being through outreach and continued education efforts.

Phillip D. O’Connell, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

Born in Macon, Georgia in 1907, Phillip earned his law degree from the University of Florida. He opened a law office in West Palm Beach in June 1931. The following year he was elected West Palm Beach municipal judge, and four years later was elected assistant state attorney for Palm Beach and Broward counties. In 1939, he became state attorney, where for more than two decades he helped to shape the history of Palm Beach County. Throughout his career, Phillip always took the time to dedicate himself to his community by being a participant and benefactor to numerous charitable, religious, professional and civic organizations, including being a founding director of Flagler National Bank.
