What We Do

Since our creation by Congress in 1984, NFWF has grown to become the nation’s largest private conservation foundation. We work with both the public and private sectors to protect and restore our nation’s fish, wildlife, plants and habitats for current and future generations.

NFWF supports conservation efforts across all 50 states and U.S. territories. Since our founding, we've funded over 23,300 rigorously evaluated projects, awarded to both large environmental organizations and small local initiatives. We do not fund advocacy or litigation, and do not conduct membership campaigns. Instead, we focus on achieving results and building a better future for our world.

Chesapeake Bay Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Grants

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the federal-state Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) partnership, is soliciting pre-proposals through the Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction (INSR) Grants program to improve water quality and reduce nutrient and sediment pollution to the Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers and streams. Major funding for the INSR Grants program is provided by EPA, with other important contributions from Altria Group, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the U.S. Forest Service.

No single organization can solve complex community challenges alone, which is why United Way serves as a connector, convener, and catalyst by bringing together nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, foundations, and community members to build collective solutions.

Who we support and where 

We support low-income and other vulnerable groups of children, families, and older adults in 13 localities and over one million residents: the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights, and the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, Powhatan, and Prince George. Our extensive reach across multiple communities allows us to share innovations and scale solutions, improving lives throughout our region.  

Program Capacity Grants

Program Capacity grants are designed to support the launch of pilot programs or expand existing services with the aim of reducing duplicated services, supporting efficiency, and scaling proven solutions. Program Capacity grants have the following features:

• Program Capacity grants are 1-year awards
• Program Capacity grants are restricted funds that must be applied to a single specific program or targeted effort
• Program Capacity awards range between $10,000–$70,000

As a community foundation created from the sale of John Randolph Hospital in 1995, John Randolph Foundation is dedicated to building healthy communities and bright futures in the communities historically served by the hospital.John Randolph Foundation: Community Contribution GrantsJohn Randolph Foundation partners with charitable organizations in the Tri-Cities region of Virginia to build healthy communities and bright futures.

Community contribution grant applications are accepted year-round and awarded to charitable organizations in the Tri-Cities region of Virginia for programs, projects, and events. Small-scale funding to support local events, initiatives, and/or urgent needs within the community. Types of Grants:
